I tipped the scale this morning at 189 and continue to
progress right along. I'm still trying to get my food
quantities right so that I slow down here at the end and
don't bounce back up. Yes, I've already bounced up a couple
times but have managed to get it right back off. There are
a couple of foods--beef jerky is the worst of them--that I
have found result in near instant weight gain. I suspect
that the high level of sodium in it contributes to water
retention which adds on the extra pounds, however briefly.
Just my opinion, I could be wrong about why. In any case,
as much as I like it, beef jerky has been relegated to the
occasional treat category.
My feel good moment of the week: On Saturday I went into the
store with my children to purchase a couple items for our
weekend hike. While in the store we passed a woman who
knows all of us and is a friend of my wife. The first time
she passed us we were in a bit of a crowd and, though she
said hello to the children, she did not acknowledge me. I
just assumed that she did not see me. About 5 minutes later
she passed us again, this time without a crowd, and again
acknowledged the children. I said hello but she still did
not acknowledge me. I thought this was odd as this is a
woman who we have known for quite some time. She has no
reason to slight me that I could think of but still she had
not acknowledged me. This bothered me a bit so I resigned
myself to ask my wife what I might have done to make this
woman mad at me. Not 30 seconds after this last passing,
she walked up in front of me and asked "are you you?" After
which she stated that she had not recognized me and, were it
not for having the kids with me, she would not have
recognized me. It wasn't so long ago that I had last seen
her--shortly before Christmas I believe--and she, honestly,
couldn't believe how much I had changed in appearance in
that time. Certainly enough to keep me motivated this week.

Nice story, JJ....
I expect some slight bouncing around a goal weight, and if you learn that
something causes water retention, but not fat gain, well, I wouldn't worry
too much about that.
It will be fun when we meet in Atlanta come October...

JJ,
Your weight loss has been nothing less than remarkable!
That is a funny story, but it goes to show the huge difference in such a
short time.
Truly inspiritional!

A huge congratulations on the weight loss, but something even more important
struck me as I read your posting. My gosh, your children have such a great
role model in you! To see a parent set a goal, stick to a plan, and
accomplish that goal is an incredible gift to your children. You should be
patting yourself on the back for both!

JJ, it's no wonder she didn't recognize you -- comparing your August and
December pictures, you don't even look related to yourself. December to
February, yeah, you look like the same guy, only thinner. But if your friend
knew she was seeing you in December and ran into you by accident last week, I
can see where she might have not expected you to have your current appearance.
Great results!

You have been making FANTASTIC progress, JJ -- not being recognized
by someone who KNOWS you had to be a BIG boost to your ego :-)

Always nice to see your posts about your progress, JJ. No
wonder your friend didn't recognize you!

Just want to echo what others have said. You have been a major inspiration
for me. I love before and after shots. They've always inspired me. You
really should submit your pics to the Atkins site. The change is so dramatic
you could really help a lot of people like me who use those photos to get
started and keep going.
Good work my man.

Thank you Bear. The reason I posted the pictures at all was
because of how much I appreciated seeing the pictures others
had posted who had been successful and thought I should
return, or at least continue, the favor. Your message is
not lost. So far as submitting to Atkins: I don't know. I
wouldn't/couldn't do it without including my wife...she has
been every bit as successful with this as I have and
definitely a factor in my personal success. I guess we can
talk about it and see.
