my doctor wants me to take two calcium antacid tablets per day for calcium.
she recommends the antacids because they're cheaper than buying a
supplement, but are absorbed equally well.  i went out and bought some Tums,
only to see that they're made with sugar.  it never even occurred to me that
there would be sugar in medications.

does anyone know of a sugar free antacid?  or am i going to have to pay
through the nose for a calcium supplement?

Your doctor is an idiot. Calcium carbonate is the worst calcium supplement you
could take, your body will hardly absorb any of it. A supplement with calcium
citrate and malate would work much better, and won't cost *that* much.

Certain forms of chelated calcium (calcium citrate and calcium citrate
malate) are widely thought to be significantly better absorbed and more
effective for osteoporosis treatment than calcium carbonate. However, while
some studies support this belief 6,7,9,10 others do not.8,122,123 The
discrepancy may be due to the particular calcium carbonate products used;
some calcium carbonate formulations may dissolve better than others.

Chelated calcium is much more expensive and bulkier than calcium carbonate.
In other words, you have to take larger pills, and more of them, to get
enough calcium. It is not at all uncommon to need to take five or six large
capsules daily to supply the necessary amount, a quantity some people may
find troublesome.

The form of calcium found in beverages is usually the chelated form, calcium
citrate malate, or a slightly less well absorbed form, tricalcium phosphate.

Bullcrap.  They only absorb about 3 percent better than calcium carbonate,
but they cost about 4 times as much.

There are sugarfree Tums available.

I truly HATE when people are rude to each other on newsgroups instead
of offering constructive help!

I take a calcium suppliment, but there have been TONS of commercials
for Tums as a "good source of calcium" so I wouldn't call the OP's
doctor an "idiot" or says the calcium in Tums isn't absorbed without
ALOT of data to support it.

PLAY NICE!

i truly HATE when people don't quote the post they're replying to on
newsgroups and instead offer comments that appear to come out of nowhere
and relate to nothing!

It's a simple fact. I got in this same argument with a doctor friend. He
insisted Tums were fine. Then after doing some research, he admitted he was
wrong. Having your stomach become dependant on anticids isn't a great thing
either.

Why do I need to be thin to be happy? I'm happy now.

don't you have any other arguments?  if it's simple fact, why are there
disagreements on it in the medical community?  oh wait, i know.  they're all
wrong and you're right.  convenient how that always works out for you.

do you have links to the research, i'd love to read it.

my mistake.  your constant argumentative posts seem pretty unhappy to me.  i
apologize.

perhaps you'd like to challenge the studies referenced in this article:
http://www.calciuminfo.com/prof/3_9.htm

here's another article with some good info:
http://www.calciuminfo.com/prof/3_4.htm

this doctor says that while citrate may be absorbed more efficiently,
there's nothing wrong with carbonate, it costs less and you still get your
calcium:
http://healthlink.mcw.edu/article/964794298.html

this article suggests that both citrate and carbonate are great choices:
http://ag.arizona.edu/maricopa/fcs/bb/supps.htm

here's another article suggesting they're of equal value:
http://www.healthcastle.com/calciumcarbonate-calciumcitrate.shtml

i wonder why all these people are such idiots?

If you can deal with shopping at Wal-Mart (I no longer can), you can pick
up about 150 calcium tabs for $10, IIRC. Spring Valley brand. That'll last
you for 75 days. I consider it extremely inexpensive as a preventive
measure against osteoporosis.

I've never noticed the cost difference between an antacid and a calcium
supplement.  But my doctor told me to not take an antacid, because the calcium
is hard to absorb.  That echoes what another poster said.

Another tip, while discussing calcium:  if you ever get insomnia, consider
taking a calcium supplement that also has magnesium right before you go to bed.
The magnesium will help you sleep.  I wake up about 1/3 as often as I did
before, and on those occasions I get back to sleep about twice as fast.

yeah, i'm also taking 800 MGs of Magnesium per day, four giant horse pills.
yet another reason i'd rather crunch two tums than swallow an additional
four horse pills!

thanks

Thanks for the tip. I'm happy with what I have--and my diet contains more
calcium now than ever before, but I'm sure Kelly will be glad to know about
it.

Tums makes a sugar-free version. It's orange flavored and quite tasty,
almost like a creamsicle. :-)
