Measuring salad

How does one go about measuring 2 cups of salad greens? On Atkins, you can
have the two cups daily but two cups seems like such a little amount. I have
never actually measured it since I can't squeeze lettuce into a measure cup
so I kind of estimate. Plus they say it is supposed to be loosely packed.
How is that possible? Also, about how many carbs would be in that? (salad
would consist of primarily lettuce with a couple slices cucumber and thinly
sliced radish).  Thanks.

just get a measuring cup, break up the lettuce, and drop it in.

or, don't sweat it...lettuce has basically nothing in it...you can get a
pile of it...

I measured at first too, but eventually got tired of it. I get a
handful of salad and stick it on a plate with whatever meat I am
having. Lots of times the meat ends up being ate mixed in the salad. I
just put small amounts of other things like tomato, cheese, bacon
bits, cucumber ham, etc.. added to it. It works for me.

I also blend different lettuce and spinach together, and put them into
large ziplocks. Iceberg, spinich and romaine.  Easier to deal with at
dinner time. Kids take turns setting it all out, then putting it away
after dinner.

They take turns too, chopping and slicing and storing it in the fridge
too. Helps out on getting myself overloaded with so much to do.

I figured out in my head (maybe not a great idea) That with the
lettuce, along with salad dressing... Around 3-5 carbs?

Well, according to fitday, 5 cups of romaine has less than 2 carbs after you
subtract fiber.  Hence, imo, it's not work counting.....and when you think
about it, since eating a lot of it provides some fiber, it just ought to be
a free food.

It's considered a free food on my diet. That's one food I don't
measure - I eat a ton of lettuce. With all those nutrients (we're not
talking iceberg here) fiber in it, I don't understand the logic in
limiting intake. Low cal, high fiber - an ideal food.

I weigh all my ingredients (or, in the case of cherry tomatoes, for instance,
count them), add them all up, then divide by the number of servings.  As long as
it fits into my daily carb budget, it works for ME.

I don't worry about measuring it, since it's such a change from what I was
eating.   I just do not eat a lot of it.  I may be going out on a limb here
but it seems to me if you are moderate about salad you'll be fine.

I count my 2 C of salad as weighing 4 oz.
But YMMV, of course.

I bet you'd still lose weight even if you did eat a lot of salad.

I have only 3 flaws.  My first flaw is thinking that I only have 3 flaws.

I would bet the same way. I eat as much salad (made of low calorie
vegetables and leafy things) as I can. It only helps to eat less
calorie dense stuff, and also helps not to have colds.

I don't know about that.... some people have reported gaining massive
amounts of weight on just a few cabbage leaves.

Most of us probably aren't in danger of eating too little. :)

What kind of cabbage? Cabbage with a whole stick of melted butter on it?
Chocolate covered cabbage leaves? Breaded and deep-fried cabbage?

I usually have more compassion for the special learners.

My bad.

Those are all good questions.

Other good questions would be on the subjects of "self-reporting" and
"veracity".

Break up the lettuce leaves and put them in a measuring cup. Don't stuff
them in.

Two cups is less than most who don't measure might think. Just do it the
first couple of times to get the idea of the volume that makes up two cups
and then eyeball it after that.

Hi Eileen,

I found it impossible to measure, too.  So, my salads are 1/4 medium head
of lettuce, torn or chopped (usually chopped).  When I use pre-packaged
lettuce, I just compare what's in my bowl to the size of my quarter head
lettuce.  Works for me!
