Here's my deal...
I'm a fairly new low-carber. Have gradually "eased" my way into it. I
started off taking smaller carb portions. At this point I do not eat
bread or pasta. My diet includes meat, eggs, cheese, nuts. I freely
eat green veggies/squash and eat only very small amounts of tomatoes
and *very* occasional low GI fruits.
I am probably going to go Atkins, but I'm waiting until after
Passover. [Before the trolls step in, Atkins himself advised to clear
two weeks out of the calendar where there wasn't anything else going
on.]
Here's the deal.
I initially started low-carbing to control the awful headaches I was
getting.
The first two days, as I was easing into it, I got incredibly sick
from blood sugar issues... it was also the beginning of "my time of
the month". I had the hypo that wouldn't quit. I ended up breaking it
and eating some carb food, and I decided to more gradually ease into
low-carbing. It took about three days before my low blood pressure
symptoms faded away. My partner said I "smelled weird".
At the end of that, I had a tremendous burst of energy... for about
two days.
Cheated, had cake and Japanese noodles the day after getting
married... crashed and burned, slept about three hours, had a raging
headache. This was about a week and two days ago now.
So having learned from that "cheat" I have quit all that and stopped
eating *all* foods that "set me off". A piece of cake is NOT worth
feeling sick!!
I feel like I haven't quit recovered after the cheat though. I haven't
gotten my energy back, despite eating only meat, cheese, a *small*
amount of nuts, and green veggies.
This fatigue manifests as fatigue in my arms and legs; I can feel
perfectly energetic otherwise but my arms/legs will be tired as if
I've been doing heavy lifting. Feels like tremendous effort to climb
stairs, or lift my arms to type.
I need the energy back so I can get back to exercising.
I'm wondering if this is common/normal. What did anyone else go
through?
And yes I am getting checked for diabetes - probably next week. I'm
going to ask the hubby tonight to *please* get me a blood glucose
checker.

Are you taking supplements and are you drinking enough water? Also try eating
several small meals instead of 3 big ones. Track your food on fitday.com to
see if you're getting enough calories.

Are you taking your supplements? I was just taking a multivitamin, and felt
better within (I swear) an hour when I added potassium. Over the course of the
first month I figured out what else I needed, and now have a handful of pills
twice a day. Sounds like a pain, but I've never felt better! And as tedious as
it sounds, exercise will GIVE you energy. You just have to push through and get
the ball rolling.

My first few days were active work days. I made sure I brought my cheese
cubes and water, and ate every few hours. That helped get me over the
fatigue which turned into a burst of energy.

Might want to go see a Dr., get some blood work, you may have something else
going on there.

I haven't had any serious problems, nothing like yours. But I do get
some simliar tiredness/sleepiness in the muscles. Mine comes and goes
with my blood sugar level. It can change within half an hour or less,
when I haven't done any exercise or anything to tire them or to rest
them.

I've always tried not to have too much high-sugar stuff. But I kind of
fell into low-carb by accident last week. I tried taking a little
glycerine/glucerol and suddenly my body didn't want anything but fresh
raw veg and milk products like yoghurt. Felt odd the first day or two,
especially since I hadn't prepared for this and didn't have much on
hand. I'm not trying to do ketosis or Atkins or anything really extreme,
just even out the blood sugar.

Me too. Except I don't have meat or nuts (except very light ones like
pinons occasionally). I tried some 'bean thread' noodles and they seemed
ok but haven't used them again. I tend to fill up on veg and dairy and
not have room for noodles. Lots of yoghurt, sour cream, cream cheese,
and butter -- nibble on cold butter like it was cheese. Lots of vit/min
tablets, ginko.

Looking at my journal, I don't see the bs issues getting worse. The day
before appetites changed was very stressful, lots of driving, lots of
sugar and caffeine. So I was tired and crashing from that.

I had a large portion of 'bean thread' = saifun noodles with no harm,
seemed pretty good effects. Haven't had any sweets (except continuing
glycerol when I think about it).

Mine isn't as serious as 'fatigue'. I call it a 'sleepy' feeling in
various muscles; like tired and late at night. It comes and goes in
different muscles with little relation to what I've been doing with the
muscles. It will be in the back or the shoulders/arms or hands or around
the eyes.... different places. Haven't noticed it much in the legs. I
think food or glycerol usually stops it for a while

You can probably get one free with purchase of 50 or 100 test strips if
you order online. I like TheraSense Freestyle because you don't have
take the blood from fingertips. I like to track a whole day at every
half hour (or more often if I feel things are changing fast). In a day
and half I used 60 sticks! I couldn't have done all that in the fingers.
Good luck,
