Damsel in dis Dress - 19 Mar 2004 00:03 GMT Wow! Is this ever different from last year!
* No low-carb flu!
* I have my meal plans all worked out in my head already. I know what I can and can't eat.
* I've joined a gym. Last year, the only exercise I got was walking up and down stairs in our two story house.
* My fasting blood sugar is slowly creeping back where it belongs. When I started again last Friday, it was over 200. Today, it was 134. It's been a very consistent reduction. I feel confident that, by the time I finish the first two weeks (I'm not technically on Induction - peanut butter on celery just tastes too damned good), my blood sugar will be within the normal range.
* And, I'm able to help inspire others not to make the same mistakes I made last year, after losing nearly 40 pounds, then gaining it all back.

Low-carb flu is the reaction your body has to the change in the way you're eating. Headaches are common. Nausea. Irritability. It can last up to a week, or, like my very fortunate case (this time), you may not experience it at all.

It can last up to a week, or, like my very fortunate case > (this time), you may not experience it at all. Hi Carol,
Today is day 6 for me on induction in the atkins program. It was a bit difficult until day 3, then I felt great. All was well and I was convinced this is the right thing. At day 4 I could not sleep at night due to painful leg aches. Same with day 5 at night. Now today, day 6, I have a terrible headache; have had it about 4 hours now. It's a pounding one. And my legs still ache like hell. My back muscles are starting to ache too.
I am taking a multi-vitamin (without iron). I also am taking a potassium supplement. But it doesn't seem to be helping. I thought my headache was due to the 2 ibuprofen I had to take last night just to sleep because my legs ache so bad. I say rebound because the ibuprofen had cornstarch in it, according to the inactive ingredients. I don't know.
I recently obtained Lite Salt which has 50% salt and 50% potassium. So I'll try that.
I also can't, how shall we say, poop? I haven't gone in three days. I must have half a cow in my intenstines by now, rotting away. I purchased psyllium husks and have been downing many glasses of water with a bunch of psyllium husks for 2 days now and nothing. No poop action.
Maybe that is why I have a headache and my legs are achy ... I'm clogged up and am getting poisened by my own, uh, waste maybe. I dont' know.
Maybe I am overreacting ... maybe this is all part of the "low-carb flu" that you mentioned. I sometimes think maybe I need sugar and carbs, for brain food, to make my headache go away. I don't want to.
And then I'm confused about the whole sugar issue on induction. Can you, or can't you, have any at all? If I see heavy whipping cream at the store and it says 1g of sugar, should I avoid it? If so, why is it on the atkins induction menu in his book? And the book recommends his low-carb bars during induction for a snack. They, too, have 1g of sugar in them. So I think it's not unreasonable that I am confused.
And I feel like poop. Headache, muscle aches ...

My doctor freaked out when I suggested to her that I would be starting to take potassium supplements. She feels very strongly that it's a mineral that needs to be medically advised and monitored.
Myself, I take multi-vitamins/minerals *with* iron, because I tend to be anemic. The supplements you take should be based on your personal needs, not just because everyone else is doing it. That's a lesson I learned last year.
The amount of corn starch in ibuprofen is SO tiny! I can't imagine that it would have any real effect on weight loss.

[quoted text clipped - 3 lines] >husks and have been downing many glasses of water with a bunch of psyllium >husks for 2 days now and nothing. No poop action. Are you eating lots of vegetables? Especially broccoli? I don't have any constipation problems while low-carbing, likely because of all the veggies. I eat 1/4 head of lettuce for lunch every day, with assorted toppings. And I usually put 3 tablespoons of olive oil on the salads (along with red wine vinegar, Italian seasoning, and sometimes Parmesan cheese).
For dinner, I usually cover half of my plate with broccoli, and put a tablespoon of butter on it. I hope you like broccoli, because it's got a lot of roughage!
>Maybe that is why I have a headache and my legs are achy ... I'm clogged up >and am getting poisened by my own, uh, waste maybe. I dont' know. Time for a laxative?

I don't want to. TIME will take the headache away. Please don't give in to the notion that carbs will help you. Right now, carbs are what you're trying to avoid. CARBS ARE THE ENEMY!

I use a LOT of whipping cream (in powdered low-carb shakes, on Jell-O, on my Keto banana walnut hot cereal ...) and it's never affected my weight loss. Hell, sometimes, I drink it straight from the carton. <G>
>And I feel like poop. Headache, muscle aches ... Have no fear. This too shall pass. Pun intended.
I'm taking a more relaxed approach to low-carbing this time around. Feels good, and I'm losing weight very nicely. You don't have to listen to a thing I say. <shrug> Make your own decisions based on all the feedback that is given you. What's right for one person may be completely wrong for another.
Best wishes, Steve! Carol

Jenny - 20 Mar 2004 04:18 GMT Damsel,
It's great to hear your blood sugar is coming down so fast!
For anyone taking certain blood sugar pills, and that includes ACE inhibitors and Diovan, supplemental potassium can be very dangerous. That's because these drugs block the normal way your body rids of excess potassium, so it can build up to levels that are so high that they mess up your heart beat.
I got the cramps the first time I low carbed years ago and used the Morton's Salt Substitute which worked very well. But since starting the Diovan it hasn't been a problem.

>It's great to hear your blood sugar is coming down so fast! Thanks. I'm not taking it religiously, but am faithfully taking fasting tests. This morning, it was 159. Probably dawn phenonemon, since I didn't get up until 11:30. The earlier I awaken, the lower my blood sugar. I did test it this afternoon, and it was 124. I'm feeling better about this whole thing.

Thanks for all the info, Jenny.

Jenny - 20 Mar 2004 15:49 GMT Carol,
I have to take Diovan because I had an allergic reaction to the ACE inhibitor. But you probably can take an ACE inhibitor. (Lisinopril is the generic one.) It's much cheaper and does the same good things for your body.
If you have diabetes you should be on an ACE inhibitor The reason is that these prevent the hardening of the capillaries in your kidneys that lead to kidney failure. They may also protect your eyes. There is accumulating evidence that good blood pressure control can also prevent diabetic nerve damage.
The downside of the ACE inhibitors is that some people do have reactions to them. I got facial swelling. Other people get dry coughs. The ARBS (which is what Diovan does) don't do this.
Both kinds apparently reduce insulin resistance.
Looking at how spectacularly well your blood sugar is responding, don't you have to really wonder about doctors who are pushing Avandia, which reduces blood sugar by about 30 mg/dl but RAISES LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, besides causing edema and occasional heart failure, when a low carb diet can drop it by far more than that?
I almost fell off my chair when I read that Avandia causes the very problems with cholesterol that doctors say a low carb diet will cause, BUT WHICH IT DOESN'T. It's right there in the Prescribing Information!

I've bookmarked your site. Thank you for providing such experienced information. I always was suspicious of the "net carb" claims. Thanks.

That's > because these drugs block the normal way your body rids of excess potassium, > so it can build up to levels that are so high that they mess up your heart > beat. I'm taking a drug called Tarka these days for high BP, and it carries a warning not to take supplemental potassium. I don't take potassium in pill form, but I swear it seems like potassium is added to so many products these days. Many items I look at (like the LC shakes, which are so handy for a meal on the run) all have added potassium. And many of my favorite veggies seem to have lots of potassium too.
A potassium pill usually seems to be 99 mg of potassium, and a serving of cauliflower has about 142g of potassium. I wonder where the cutoff limit is?
