Cubit - 18 Mar 2004 23:11 GMT "When is a diet pill worth $153? NOT when it's Leptoprin!"
I saw the leporine commercial again today and decided to do some web research. The link below is to a website that exposes the ingredients of Leptoprin and tries to explain what they are. This is clearly bad stuff....

She won't hold still for more than about 1/4 of a second -- no WONDER she's losing weight :-) The use of CLASSIC persuasion techniques are so blatant they are downright LAUGHABLE, yet all I can do is cringe from the snake oil factor. I can't change the channel fast enough -- it's the same kind of feeling I get when changing the channel because a show I WANT to watch is about to come on, but, unfortunately, I am then catching the END of something like Maury Povich, Love Connection or a "reality" show and I don't want passers-by to think I actually WATCH any of THOSE shows.

Doesn't the fact that they're making huge amounts of money off something so blatantly laughable even amuse you ... just a little? I thing PT was WAY off. 2 fools a minute? It has to be double that at least!

To bad ephedrine is banned by the FDA. I do have to admire the psychology of the ad. How many people are going to think that they couldn't charge that amount of money unless the stuff works. Obvious faulty logic, but I bet the stuff is selling. And you will always get someone who experiences a placebo effect, and does end up losing the weight. Another one is the brain formula they are giving away except for a small shipping and handling charge. I am sure that the S&H is at cost right? They even have some idiot on the ad doing a little positive reinforcement saying "Free? If they are giving it away free it must be good, right?" or words to that effect. I bet whatever they get for S&H more than covers the cost of whatever the crap is. the advertising budget, the cost to bottle and label it, pay the pitchman, and still end up with a healthy profit. PT Barnum was right.

Wake up and do the research, sleepyidiot. Well lets take a look at what WebMD has to say on the subject. I took this directly from WebMD: http://my.webmd.com/content/article/81/97056.htm?lastselectedguid={5FE84E90-BC77 -4056-A91C-9531713CA348}
How to Spot Ephedra
Ephedra is one of a group of plants that are a source of ephedrine alkaloids, including ephedrine and pseudophedrine. When chemically synthesized, these substances are regulated by the FDA as drugs.
But the safety of dietary supplements containing ephedrine alkaloids are not regulated by the FDA, and may be hazardous.
Here's a short list of some products that have been know to contain ephedra. Some companies may have already removed ephedra from these products:
Metabolife Ripped Fuel Diet Fuel Stacker 3 NaturalTRIM Hydroxycut Xenadrine RFA-1 Metab-O-Lite Metabolift Up Your Gas Truckers Luv It Yellow Jackets
Products that contain ephedra may list it on their label. Products with any of the following ingredients contain ephedra:
Ephedra Ephedrine Ma huang Ephedra sinica Sida cordifolia Pinellia
So possibly it is you who is short on research JC. Maybe you should try actually knowing what you're talking about before you go correcting others. I guess we know of at least one person in here who isn't in danger of thinking too much.

Ignoramus3239 - 19 Mar 2004 17:31 GMT JC is correct, ephedrine was not banned, ephedra was. Ephedrine is a component of some asthma medications also. Because of many lawsuits regarding ephedrine, it was removed from numerous diet supplements.
Ephedrine is synthetic, ephedra is derived from plants.

Asthma medications are not "dietary supplements" are they? Therefore they are already regulated by the FDA. Products that contain ephedrine, contain Ephedra.

Wrong, Ephedra contains ephedrine, but not all ephedrine is Ephedra. Ephedra is a herbal product containing ephedrine. Ephedrine is also produced in a synthetic version.

JC Der Koenig - 19 Mar 2004 18:18 GMT So you can do a WebMD search, but you can't figure out how it applies.
Here's something easier for you: trot, er no, waddle down to Walgreen's and look for a package of Primatene in the pill form. Try reading the ingredient list, if you can manage it.

Products that list ephedrine on the label do not contain any ephedra. They are related, but not the same ingredient.
Ephedra is an herb, containing varying amounts of ephedrine alkaloids. Herbals are not regulated by the FDA to contain what the label says they contain.
Assorted herbal ephedra products were tested in a lab a couple of years ago (for Dateline or 20/20 or similar show), and were found to contain anywhere from less than half, to more than double, the amount of ephedrine alkaloid listed on the label. The amounts varied from batch to batch within the same product. This is primarily what made it dangerous. Someone who bought a batch that happened to be weak might take double doses that were really single doses, and then get a strong batch in the next bottle, and unknowingly start taking dangerous quadruple doses.
Ephedrine hydrochloride is an over the counter drug, which is regulated by the FDA to contain the amount of sythesized ephedrine that the label states, and does not contain any herbal ephedra.

DJ Delorie - 22 Mar 2004 21:25 GMT > Ephedrine contains ephedra. It is banned as a "dietary supplement" That's like saying sugar contains cake. You've got it backwards. Ephedra contains ephedrine, not the other way around.
Ephedrine, used for other purposes besides as a dietary supplement, is regulated by the FDA and is NOT banned. Heck, I can buy it at my local supermarket.
