Hi Everyone

I've just started the low carb thing :)

I'm 25 M and I think about 110Kg (I don't own scales)

I'm working in a really hot and humid environment which isn't making the
tiredness and fatige any easier. But I'm getting by.

I havn't got any diet plan or idea of what i should be eating on this. All I
really know most meats are ok, cheese, and nuts.

I've been eating

bacon
eggs
Roast Chicken
Roast beef
Nuts (armonds, mixed) less than 10g's per day

Not exactly the most varied diet, but I didnt' have much to work with before
i found this group :)

Now I find out that i can eat fruit's, some veggies (How are apples,
oranges, grapes? and what quanties?)

as for exercise...
I start playing Squash again about 3 months ago and was playing twice a week
untill about 3 weeks ago when i got a really really bad flu that just won't
go away :(
I need to get back into that and I've started some morning stretches and
walking (10min to start, I'ts normally about 30 degrees here at 6am + high
humidity)

I also take Swisse Men's Ultivite MutliVitamin (any comments on this? good,
bad? soso?)

Any Suggestions or comments would be greatly appriciated, I need all the
help i can get :)

Fruit is not low carb.

Most of us probably aren't in danger of eating too little. :)

I'd be wary about fruit, most of it has a lot of carbs.  Some people add
berries on the later stages of their weight loss, but in limited amounts.
As for veggies, most anything you'd have in a salad is ok, with some
caveats: olives and carrots are a little carby.  The amount of carrot
slivers in premixed bagged salads doesn't worry me, and 4 or 5 olives in a
salad are ok, but I wouldn't make a whole meal out of either of them, ya
dig?

I've been doing my own low-carb plan.  The things I don't eat are:

potatoes, rice, pasta, bread, junk food
The things I eat freely:

all kinds of meat (chicken, beef, pork, fish, etc) eggs, brocolli, spinach,
lettuce

The things I eat in moderation:

onions, bellpeppers, olives, mushrooms, cheese, nuts, oils

Things I eat as rare treats:

cantaloupe, fried foods (like a few fried chicken wings or fried shrimp
when we go out for Chinese food)

I only added cheese, nuts, and oils to the moderation list recently because
I am relatively close to goal and calories are starting to matter more than
they did in the beginning, so I'm adjusting things.

Note, however, that olives are one of the Atkins salad veggies.

I'm pretty sure Atkins intended us to use a few olives in a salad, not do
what I used to do and eat an entire can of black olives as a snack.

That's just disgusting.

Yup.  I was disgusted with myself when I used to do it.  The old me. I
really don't respect or like her very much.

I know what you mean about not respecting the "old you" - I've said similar
things here recently.  But a whole mess of olives is not the grossest thing
one could down for a snack.  :-)   I've never gone for the canned type, but
give me a pint of green correggiola olives, and they are gone in a flash.
Hooboy.

You want disgusting snacks?  When I was in school I used to buy a package of
Vienna Fingers cookies and polish off the whole thing in a day's studying.

I could eat a whole box of macaroni and cheese.  An entire large bag of
potato chips (my favorite were the Ruffles cheddar and sour cream flavor).
When I was a kid I was even more of a pig.  I ate a whole bag of Fig
Newtons when I was 5 or 6, seven slices of pizza once when I was around 10,
and it was also common for me as a child to eat 5 or 6 pieces of fried
chicken, plus the crispy from my sister's chicken.  And, strangely, I
wasn't overweight until I was 12 or 13.

THe USDA database doesn't give "cup" as a measure of olives, but
extrapolating from "tbsp" (equally useless), it's a net of 4g carbs
per cup, which is the "salad veggie" serving size.

It doesn't seem that bad to me.  At the max of three cups per day,
that's still only 12g carbs.

Heck, there's only 14 net carbs per *pound* in olives.
FOB - 21 Mar 2004 22:13 GMT
Olives, whole, black, 1 cup 9 g carb, less 4 fiber.
Olives, whole, green, 1 cup 2 g carb, less 1 fiber.
Moral:  Eat 'em green.

Watcher,
I wish you the best of luck in your weight loss endeavor.

You are starting an exercise program, that is great!

However, what you are stating about food is somewhat confusing.  You state,
"I havn't got any diet plan or idea of what i should be eating on this", yet
you state later, "Now I find out that i can eat fruit's, some veggies".

If you are going to do low-carb right, you should read some info about it to
know general recommendations at least.  You don't have to choose Atkins,
South Beach, or any of the others, but it is a good idea to read the info
about them so you can decide how to do your own low-carb plan best.  You'll
likely be surprised how many things you can eat, and how many things you
thought were fine but can actually be problematic, and how many things are
fine but only in small quantities.

Read the info at http://atkins.com/howto/index.html if you don't want to buy
books; I'm sure there are similar websites for other low-carb plans.

Mark.

Hi Watcher, welcome to the group!

I'm on Atkins, so I'll address fruits from an Atkins point of view.  The first
two weeks you do not have fruit.  After that, low-glycemic fruits may be
introduced slowly while you pay attention to what, if any , effect it might have
on you.  Usually berries are recommended as the first fruit to add back.  Berries
include blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, etc.  Apples are on
the list of low-glycemic fruits (see http://atkins.com/Archive/2003/2/10-
469820.html for a section entitled "Moving Beyond Berries"), but they are still
fairly carby.  1 oz of an apple has 3.3 carbs, and HALF an apple is usually about
3.5 to 4 ozs, putting the carb count at about 13 carbs for only HALF an apple.
You have to decide how many carbs you intend to ingest in a day, then COUNT them
and see if they'll fit into your plan.
