Aspartame and Phenylalanine

In Atkins he recommends stevia rather than aspartame because of the carbs.

I found a nice tasting non-sugar candy here in Tokyo with lemon and herb
extracts (very pleasant) that is sweetened with aspartame, phenylalanine and
stevia. No mention of sorbitol or other "tols" that seem to cause digestive
complaints.

I did some looking on the Internet and found some very scary pages warning
about the neuro-toxic effect of Phenylalanine.

But a more reputable-looking site - Harvard:

http://www.joslin.harvard.edu/education/library/aspartame.shtml

says aspartame and phenylalanine are safe for people without a certain
genetic defect.

An interesting quotes from the site:

With regard to blood sugar and weight loss:

"There is no question that aspartame has been beneficial to people with
diabetes, enabling them to enjoy sweet tasting foods without the
carbohydrates. Since it does not contain calories in the usual amounts
consumed, it cannot affect blood sugar levels or cause weight gain."

Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid that's found in nearly every
protein rich food.  it's not neuro-toxic unless you consume massive
quantities of it. much more than you could get from aspartame.
Phenylalanine deficiancies could play a part in Parkinson's disease.

there have been people trying to get rich on "aspartame detox" programs and
nutrasweet lawsuits for as long as it's been out.  and AFAIK, there aren't
any serious studies to back up their claims.

unless you have phenylketonuria, it probably won't affect you in any
noticible way.

some people here find that aspartame increases their food cravings, but
phenylalanine on it's own has been used as an appetite supressant, so YMMV.

Or if you have PKU.

To the original poster... aspartame (which is made from phenylalanine)
does not have carbs.  What Atkins and others warn about is the little
blue packets which contain aspartame and fillers, the fillers being
carbs.  Sucralose is the same - the fillers are the problem, not the
sucralose itself.

It would be good if everyone were able to use it. I get a raging headache
after I drink more then 6 ounces of diet soda. I stopped drinking it for
five years and just tried it again. The answer for me is- don't drink it.
Perhaps some one knows of a brand of soda that is a no carb soda, but not
sweetened with aspartame?

Thanks

More that he noticed that many lowcarbers stalled using aspartame for no
real reason he could figure out.

It's a fairly rare disease.  There are a lot of foods that have
phenylalanine in it so if you are a phenylketonuric you would know very
early.  "Phenylketonuria (PKU) is an inherited error of metabolism
caused by a deficiency in the enzyme phenylalanine hydroxylase. Loss of
this enzyme results in mental retardation, organ damage, unusual posture
and can, in cases of maternal PKU, severely compromise pregnancy."

People who like to listen to Frank Sinatra die of heart attack and
cancer at far higher rates than people who like to listen to Britney
Spears.  Therefore, there is a link between the music of Frank Sinatra
and heart disease and cancer. --Tony Lew
