(what fun!)
and today is liquids only, so that may be a good boost too.
BTW Thanks, Damsel and  Luna!  I am glad to be back.

I hope your procedure goes as comfortably as possible, and that you'll
discover that the test was for nothing, because you're perfect inside!
Especially your kind heart.

It's totally MY pleasure to welcome you back, Jackie.  So many of last
year's gang are gone now, and you are one of the good 'uns!  I've very
happy to see you again!

When I had my colonoscopy a few months ago, it was a piece of cake. I love
how they give you that sedative to make you 'forget' the whole procedure
after it is done. The only part I didn't like was having to 'prepare' for it
day before and drink that horrible concoction to clean you out. It was
putrid. I am new here but welcome back anyways!

LOL, I'm supposed to schedule one of these (not for any health reason, but
just as a baseline now that I have passed 50) and I can't say I'm looking
forward to it!

Eileens right. It's not a big deal. The worst part is definitely the prep.
Even if you normally buy the cheapest, prison issue toilet paper that's on
sale, before you start drinking the liquid, buy the softest paper you can
find. And lots of it.

You'll thank me.

I don't know about them giving you something to make you forget, I
remember mine, but it wasn't unpleasant. And if you need a motivator to
get you to schedule your screening, you can borrow my personal
superstition which is that anytime you're proactive and do all the tests
even though you don't think you need them, that's when you turn out to be
perfectly healthy. It's the things that you put off that get you.

Martha, who thinks mammograms are far worse but still has them done.

Begin where you are - but don't end there.

I had a flexible sigmoidoscopy about 3 years ago -- it's not quite as invasive as
a colonoscopy, but the tubing still goes pretty far.  The prep wasn't pleasant,
but it wasn't THAT bad -- it was a HELL of a lot less painful than the REASON I
had to have it done in the first place, which turned out to be inconclusive (and
the problem went away entirely once I started low-carbing).  What's unexpected
and disconcerting is probably AFTERWARD as you walk away, worried about leakage
and trying (in vain) not to emit sloppy wet farts (Robin Williams did a GREAT
routine on that in his last HBO special).  They pump gas into you during the
procedure to expand things, and it's got to go SOMEWHERE.  One of the WORST parts
was that everyone waiting for a colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy at the clinic during
the next hour had to wait in a teeny, tiny waiting room that was smaller than
some family dinner tables I've seen!  So there we all were, about 9 of us, all
cramped into this little room with our knees practically touching those of the
person ACROSS from us, all KNOWING what we were all there for and trying not only
to not look at each other, but to not even acknowledge anyone else's EXISTENCE.
Bring reading material, even if you don't know how to read :-)

LOL

I get frequent bouts of diarrhoea, and was talking medical stuff with a
friend who has had the same problem recently, and she gave me an excellent
tip: use baby wipes!

It seems so simple, but I would never have thought of it!

5 years ago I had to drink 6 oz of fleets phospha soda, which was a killer
dose.
Awful taste, awful stuff.
This time, 1 and 1/2 oz twice, and buried in 10 oz ginger ale each time.   I
still think drs. should have to drink this stuff and perhaps they would come
up with something better.
It will be interesting to see if sugar alcohols have changed the intestinal
mucosa.

piece of cake! truly!

btw...when my doc came in to begin the procedure, he asked how i was, i
told him ok, but the last 3 glasses of that stuff wanted to come back up
it made me very nauseous, he said why didn't you call me? i would've
given you the pill form instead.

well, needless to say, i didnt know that. duh!

however, no more bathroom cocktails for me. next time pills. but i think
9 years from now when i'm due for a repeat, the whole procedure may be
different

I bet it will be. Aren't they already performing "virtual
colonoscopies" that are non-invasive?

I'm counting on going "virtual" when it's time for my first one :-).

Sharkman@comcast.net - 23 Mar 2004 01:24 GMT
just remember that if they find anything with the "virtual" they will have
to go in with the regular... (and they usually do find polyps).. so be
prepared to undergo the regular one too..

No polyps here, just tics and healthy mucosa.  And I have had my full share
of sugar alcohols.
I have  heard though that taking the pills does not do enough cleaning.  The
fleets phospha soda is awful but can be stirred into ginger ale. (not diet.)

I mixed mine with ginger ale and I could not hold it down. Vomited twice. In
fact, found it hard to keep down, no matter what I  mixed it with. There is
no description of what that stuff tastes like.. Maybe gasoline with too much
salt mixed in is my best guess!

Oh, you just brought back memories from two years ago.  Ickitty ick ick!
Drinking that stuff was the worst part of the procedure.  The drugs they
gave me on the day of the procedure were the best part.

If you will be taking Fleets Phosphate Soda or something equivalent, DO
NOT STEP ON A SCALE for the next few days. Truly. Last year I had one of
those, and over a 36-hour period I'd ingested one box of lemon Jello, a
few diet sodas and a lot of water. Gained about SEVEN pounds. Lost same
in two or three days. See label on Fleets bottle about water retention.
