Cured Meats - Do they interfere

Has it been your experience that cutting out highly cured meats such as
bacon, or pepperoni, make weight loss faster? I was on the Atkins diet for
two months and lost little besides the big initial Woosh. Subsequently I
stopped eating bacon, and pepperoni and I find that it is allowing me to
loose weight more quickly.
Do you think this is true, or am I just imagining it?

Barry, one of the things I discovered here was the phrase "my body, my science
experiment."  It's really true.  We learn as we go along what does and doesn't
work for us.  So there's no doubt that giving up cured meats has helped you
resume losing weight, because that's your experience.  It may -- or may not --
be other people's experience, too.  But if it turns out you're the only one
here for whom that's the case, so what?  You're losing weight again, and that's
what matters.

Good detective work on figuring that one out, by the way.

There are two things I noticed about the highly cured and highly processed
meats:

(1) They are usually riddled with sugar and the carbs add up relatively
quickly. If you are concerned about ultra-low carbs - like induction level
eating - those meats are deadly.

(2) They tend to be very high calorie, which has to affect diet. Meats like
that can easily have 300 calories per 100 gm or more, which is three times
the number of calories in an equivalent weight of chicken or fish.

You probably don't know, but did removign them lower your average
calories a day? If so you are, in effect, eating less.

Those may have been problems for you. I've eaten pepperoni every week.
I eat sausages all the time, dei meats, and sometimes bacon. None of
given me issue, but that doesn't mean they aren't some kind of issue
for you.

It may have just been timing. Your stall was your body adjusting or
compensating. It may have just been ready to lose more weight. You
could reintroduce them and see if they have an effeect.

Also you probably stayed on induction the entire time. Lots of people
stall for weeks after induction. It is a severe change and Atkins'
says to move onto OWL. You may find you lose better with more carbs.
It appear that only have to cut carbs to the point that ketosis
occurs. Cutting them further than that doesn't appear to help and some
believe it will actually cause more frequent stalls. Some here break
stalls by upping their carbs and proceeding to OWL. People continue to
lose quickly at higher than 20 carbs.

I cut them out because of the high calories and sodium.
