I had my first carb craving crash last week... :-(

Well, I survived the business trip without too many problems; was
starting to slip at the end there (I actually let them give me some
mashed potatoes, but I only ate 1/3 of the portion) and got home still
in ketosis.

But last week, I had to leave on my day trip the day before, to miss
the snow.  So I had to grab lunch on the road... I was on a 4-hour
drive.  I found a health-food store (where I got a can of Ketatoes...
haven't tried 'em yet) where they had whole-grain bread, so I thought
"hey, I can get a sandwich!"

Bad idea.  2 HUGE slices of whole grain bread with some meat and
cheese and mayo and lettuce turned out to be too many carbs.  And I
knew it within 2 hours.

So I tried to stop it by eating some cheese.  Nope.  I stopped and got
some peanuts.  Nope.  I got to the hotel obsessing about pasta and
pizza.

So I decided to just go for it, and pick up low-carbing the next
morning after it had passed.  And not just low-carbing... Phase 1,
very low carb low carbing.  And WHEW! that did it.

It took until yesterday to get myself back on track and well into
ketosis (though I was "carbing out" on just a LITTLE too much sugar
alcohols a few times, so it was rocky).

So, anyone have any advice?  Should I keep on very low carbs another
week just to make sure?  Or can I start carfully adding back fruit and
maybe brown rice?

What low carb diet has brown rice and fruit when you've only lost 5 lbs???

I'm sorry - the way I typed that sounded very rude when I re-read it later.
I apologize. Five pounds is wonderful. ANY pounds off are wonderful. I'm
sure you worked hard to get them off. Honest, I'm no JC and I didn't mean it
to come out the way it did.

What sort of low-carb diet are you on (she asks much more politely and
pleasantly)?

Some ways of doing low carb allows for different foods.. and depending on
each individual, some things are ok while they may be the death knell for
someone else. I can't eat rice of any kind at all, but for some, brown rice
is ok in small amounts. Fruits might be ok as well. I didn't do an
induction.. and sometimes I allow myself to eat a bit of potato if it turns
up on my plate when we are eating out. I do avoid pasta as I end up feeling
so bloated and bleeecchhhy when I eat it, lol. Even corn doesn't cause me
any real problems but I don't eat it often in whole form.. occasionally corn
chips though.. there are just many ways of adjusting this way of eating to
fit our own personal prefernces and what works for each of us. Some really
truly do have to cut so far back that it doesn't seem possible to keep up. I
think too many feel like this is some kind of race and they have to lose the
weight as fast as possible. I don't see anything wrong with losing it more
slowly if it might be a more tolerable way of eating for some of us. I also
think some tend to obsess over the ketosis thing and don't just pay enough
attention to longer term trends.

My advice. Do not put bread in your mouth until you reach normal weight.

Your post makes it appear that you are plainly very sick physically,
and need to do everything in your power to gain a little bit of health.

Hi Merryl,
Like me and many others you sound like a carb addict; therefore, I'd stick
to not eating any kind of carbs that trigger a binge.   I'm certainly not
near my goal, but I've lost alot of the cravings and it's much easier saying
NO to carbs now than ever before.  I went according to the book, Induction 2
weeks and now OWL.  I currently eat anywhere between 30-50  carbs per day,
and I watch my calories too.  I sometimes allow myself some strawberries.
The major cravings come about a week before my period, which I call the
'bottomless pit week'.  It gets difficult then but you have to ignore it as
much as possible or you will binge.  The strawberries help with the sweet
craving, but thats about all the fruit I allow myself for now.  I never was
a big fruit eater anyhow.
Chin up, you can do it if you want it.

Merryl,

You don't say which diet you're on but if its Atkins you should add
vegetables first before moving on to fruit.  Rice, even brown rice, is out
for a long time given your goal weight.  If you really crave fruit, try SF
Jell-O first and see if that helps.

This is all good.
You are learning how to eat.
I've been at it for about 3 months and since I'm at my goal weight I go off
the path often but keep myself on track just enough to maintain. It works
for me. Advice here is just to stay with it and consider how you will be
eating over a lifetime.
