Am I missing something?

Joan J. - 22 Mar 2004 20:20 GMT Hello, all,
With all the negative posts about most of the new "low-carb" products, I just want to make sure I'm not missing something about my one low-carb product that I buy. It's Advant-Edge's Carb Control (ready to drink) shakes. I ran it through the hidden-carb calculator and it comes up with no hidden carbs. I have no negative reactions to it and it seems like a good "treat" when I have a sweet-urge (maybe once a week, if that). It's 100 calories, 3 g fat, 4g carb less 2 g fiber, no sugars, and 15 g protein. The front says "1 net carb" but I count it as 2 (4 carbs less 2 fiber). I usually drink it for lunch, along with a small salad. Very satisfying.
Am I missing anything? I'm on a plateau right now and don't want to find out I'm sabotaging myself with this occassional treat!
Thanks in advance, Joan J

Flamed. Get it?
Not "flammed".
You give fat people a bad name. I still don't think they're all as stupid as you though.

Apparently you a NOT a lady or a helpful person.

Joan J. - 22 Mar 2004 20:37 GMT > What are the ingredients? > > i Hi Ig,
Ingredients are: Filtered water, protein blend (soy protein isolate, whey protein concentrate, and calcium caseinate), cocoa powder processed with alkail, natural and artificial flavor, sunflower oil, and mineral blend (magnesium phosphate, potassium citrate, calcium phosphate, sodium citrate, sodium ascorbate, Vitamin A palmitate, beta-niacinamide, zinc gluconate, d-calcium riboflavin, manganese gluconate, thiamin hydrochloride, potassium iodide, phytonadione, sodium molybdate, sodium selenite, cyanocobalamin), cottonseed fiber, sodium hexametaphosphate, xanthum gum, sucralose (Splenda), acesulfame potassium, carrageenan, dextrose and lecithin.
Whew!

While I would not drink such a drink, I do not see any specific components that I know to be bad. The reason why I would not drink it is that I avoid sweetened foods and there are too many chemicals that I have no idea about, in it.
That said, it seems like not the worst thing out there.

DJ Delorie - 22 Mar 2004 20:45 GMT > sucralose (Splenda), You're all set. It's the items that use sugar alcohols as sweetener (maltitol, lactitol, etc - although erythritol seems to be an exception) that one needs to be wary of.

Joan J. - 22 Mar 2004 21:53 GMT of a very long list of ingredients and with dextrose listed next to last, and no listed sugars in the percentages - will it matter? That's what I want to make sure of...

I doubt it...and as I recall, it is only 100 kcals...so as long as that fits in your budget for cals and carbs, you're good to go...

If they list dextrose after sucralose, there isn't a significant amount in there. Besides, dextrose is not one of the ambiguous carbs; if there's a significant amount, it's listed on the label as "sugars".
Atkins isn't about getting rid of every single carb, it's about controlling your carb intake.
Lorelei - 22 Mar 2004 22:34 GMT try it and see how it goes for you. You need to experiment with Your Own Body. I don't think it is necessarily very effective to reduce this WOL into minutiae, you need to "fine-tune" your own WOE. if you continue to obtain the results you want, drink your shakes. I think the reason there is so much bickering going on around here (again) is because the focus has drifted away from "your body, your science experiment" that was the focus when I came back to this NG in Jan 2003. Lori waiting for the pendulum to swing back the other way again

No, the dextrose is listed after the amounts of the vitamins and minerals, and the amounts of the Splenda and ace-K. Ingredients are listed in the order of the amounts. It's only a trace of dextrose.

Half of Atkins is carb control and you just addressed that half.
> I have no negative reactions to it ... > Am I missing anything? I'm on a plateau right now and don't want to find out > I'm sabotaging myself with this occassional treat! The other half of Atkins is isolation of food intolerances. It's why the carb ladder is sorted as it is.
If the shake has soy, the time to start using shakes is the legume rung once you've used pure soy like tofu or edemame to check your soy reaction.
Being on a plateau makes it suspecious *if* you know the formal defintion and qualify by the numbers, *if* you know your CCLL and hang out there, *if* your total calories make sense, and so on down the line of usual ifs.

>Am I missing anything? I'm on a plateau right now and don't want to find out >I'm sabotaging myself with this occassional treat! As others have said: those shakes are okay as long as they fit your carb and calorie budget. You say you drink one maybe once a week, I don't think that would be a problem. Those products only become a problem when people substitute "real" food with them, or eat/drink them like five times a day and think the are doing the WOE.

diane - 23 Mar 2004 01:39 GMT I tried those shakes before getting the Atkins shakes- They are truly low carb. I personally think the Atkins shakes taste a little better, but these were cheaper. Handy for an emergency meal or when you need a boost.

Joan J. - 23 Mar 2004 17:19 GMT Thanks to everyone who responded. You'all are very helpful! I have decided to keep the occassional shake in my diet, include the count of the carbs and cals, of course, in my daily count, and, so long as they're not causing me any problems... I'm good to go :) I don't have sugar cravings at all, but do like an occassional shake as something different to accompany a salad at lunch time. I also like the fact it's high in potassium, which I feel I'm missing since I've given up my daily banana (I have restless leg syndrome, and potassium is important. I've added a potassium supplement, but this additional potassium can't hurt!)
Thanks again for your support, Joan J

The solution to the potassium issue is lite salt (various brands). It is 50-50 sodium and potassium salts. Switch to lite salt at your table, take it as a goal to use 1/2 tsp to 1 tsp per day, and potassium is handled.
> I've added a potassium supplement Irrelevant. They are limited to 99 mg because of interactions with certain diurectic blood pressure meds. To get your quota 99 mg at a time you'd have to take them by the dozen. But a teaspoon or less of lite salt has as much as a dozen of them.
Restless leg - Calcium is more common than potassium to help legs. Calcium comes in tablets that do have enough to help. Two or three have enough to make a big difference if it's a calcium issue not a potassium one.

I have never brought it up, becauce most peope who do not experience it, cannot comprehend what it is, what it feels like--Restless Leg Syndrome. Have experienced restless leg syndrome since a teenager. Finally got a word for it a couple years ago.. LOL. Thought it was just me, thought I was going crazy at times.
I have tried magnesium also to help with it. I read it somewhere. Since starting Atkins, I have increased magnesium and postassium. I havn't increased Calcium, unless its in the high potency vitamin I also take.
Anyway, I no longer experience the restless legs. Since starting Atkins.
Many nights I paced the floors, falling asleep finally exhausted. Never thought it would ever let up, or go away. So much sleep I lost over the years because of it. Atkins, low carbing, does wonders man.

My wife had a bicycle accident when she was in junior high school. It left a scar in her quad that gives poor circulation. She's suffered from RLS ever since. She's tried numerous things over the years to no avail. Prescription strength quinine fixes it, but in her case the cure is worse than the disease: She does not sleep a wink for 48 hours after taking one of the perscription tablets.

The usual cal/mag/zinc tablets has about 3-to-1 calcium to magnesium, she found ones with a 1-to-3 reverse ratio that helped some. But recently she has tried magnesium *citrate* and that has reduced the cramps to about a third. Not a fix but any port in a storm. Down to under one night episode per week anyways.

I will give it a try on the vitamin you mentioned. My husband picked up extra magnesium for me. On accident.. a good one though, he picked up the cal/mag/zinc one you mentioned. Its not pricey either, so I can deal with taking the extra viatamins.
I have researched it some, the RLS. There are some other meds out there that are supposed to work, cannot think of them now. I get alot of great info on it off another board, Immune Support.
Thank Doug, for the tips..
