curt - 22 Mar 2004 18:58 GMT I just wanted to share this. This past week I was a idiot when it came to eating and drinking beer. During the course of the week I drank two cases (at least) of Guinness and three pints of Hagan Daaz after eating some late night food which was to slow the effects of alcohol and sober me up before bed. Of course the sugar from the Hagan Daaz didn't help in the sleep department, but it did taste good. Anyway, I ate like a pig and drank like a fish, but did manage to exercise three days that week and did lots of walking in the parade playing my bagpipe.
The point is, I was at the gym today and looked in the mirror and didn't think I looked too bad. I walked by the scale and thought, what the heck, I am going to see how much I weigh. I stepped on and was 185. This was after workout and mid day. I usually weigh at least 2-3 pounds more in mid day than morning. I was amazed. You can have a bad week and not go off the deep end. I will confess, I work out a lot and I figure that has more to do with this than anything. It seems you can eat more if you work out and not gain.
I am pretty happy about this and just wanted to mention that there may be light at the end of the tunnel and it isn't a train.
Enjoy, Curt
I am leaving my number alone, since I weigh in the morning.

ADC - 23 Mar 2004 02:41 GMT The hardest thing to geth through to some people is that a bad day (or even week) won't blow this way of eating. Just get back on the wagon. By the way...remind me -- what DOES Hagan Daaz taste like? It's been a loooonnng while.

Wonderfulness? Is that a real word? (especially in the context of JC)

JC is all about sticking to low-carb foods when you are fat and trying to lose weight, but then when you're not fat anymore you can eat whatever you want in moderation. "Moderation" meaning you don't eat so much of it that you get fat again. Makes sense to me.

I have only 3 flaws. My first flaw is thinking that I only have 3 flaws.

Makes sense to me. Fat people typically aren't good at moderation when it comes to food. Slippery slope, that is.

But there is hope that one day you won't be a fat person anymore and you'll actually learn to enjoy moderation. If you really blow it, at least you should have learned how to get back on track with this diet.

Roger Zoul - 24 Mar 2004 14:36 GMT :: exactly ::: [quoted text clipped - 12 lines] ::: it, at least you should have learned how to get back on track with ::: this diet. I honestly don't think moderation will work for many people, unless you average over time. That is, I don't think formerly fat people who lost a lot of weight on LC will be able to eat carby stuff in moderation every day. I think what will work is if they do LC during the week for five days, and then allow some carbs on the weekend (or something along those lines). By strictly following some kind of plan like that, they can achieve 'moderation' over a span of time.
Never forget -- there is a reason why many of us got so fat. We're highly prone to eating carbs and food in excess -- and most of us have a life-long background of doing so. While others here report differently, I find that I still like everything I ever ate while getting fat (that doesn't mean I always want to eat those things or that I always eat them), so for me 'moderation' will mean keeping tight control most of the time and only having 'planned' periods where I loosen control. Also, working to a plan means you don't get off track. Those who fail to plan, plan to ----.
IMO, if you're a life-long fat person that doesn't want to always be fat, then you must bear some cross of this form. Moderation of the type most people think of is simply not an option for us. Again, IMO.

Moderation of the type most > people think of is simply not an option for us. Again, IMO. Moderation works for me for some foods and does not work for others. I can eat bread and potatoes in moderation (I no longer like potatoes much). I highly doubt that I could, long term, eat sweets in moderation.

But sweets and junk food (ie, potato chips, etc.) are my true curse. But the question I haven't really answers is this: did eating normal carby foods like rice, breads, potatoes, etc, increase my desire for sweets? I'm not sure if I really know that connection. Somehow, I think they do.

Course I'm diabetic so pasta and potatoes are never going to be a staple in my diet anyways no matter how skinny I become.
I think that going on-and-off a "diet" is a recipe for failure for most of us, whether diabetic or not. I think real success comes from low-carb as a permanent lifestyle change rather than a short-term fix. Induction is a short-term fix, but low-carb is a different way of eating for the rest of my life.
