I DID IT!
I met my goal and then some! :-) My BMI according to Fitday is 20.43!
YEAH!
I had originally wanted to be 122 but wanted to get down to 120 for a little
wiggle room, and I had gotten to 120.5 for over a week with no budge in
sight and then this morning I weighed myself and I was 119! YES! 119!
YIPEEEEEEEEE
Now my problem is that since I am 55 my skin is just hanging there and
therefore makes me look like I still have some midriff bulge and stuff but
it's just loose skin. I had been doing weights but I had to stop because I
just don't have time right now. I now what you're all going to say..."MAKE
TIME" but we are moving in 6 days and we are behind schedule in packing so I
really just can't! I have been really busy from dawn to dusk packing and
hauling stuff to the new house so I have been burning calories. That
probably explains the recent weight loss. I have not been eating properly
either. I just grab something on the run. Luckily it's all been low carb
stuff. So I have not had formal exercising but I've been very active. Has
anyone who is my age and lost considerable weight ever gotten their skin
back in shape? And did weight lifting do it or should I just be happy with
the weight loss and not worry about the loose skin? :-( Now that I have my
figure back, I want my skin back too! LOL

Wow - congrats, Dot! Can I ask at what weight you started, and when?
I have no answer about the loose skin thing, but I sure do understand. At
just 30#s off, I'm already seeing loose skin (I'm 52) and it's not pretty.
I'll be interested to see answers to your question about it.
Really, great job. You must just be SO proud!

Excellent!!! I sympathize with the skin thing (I'm almost 58) but don't
really know what the answer is, but your weight is wonderful. :-)

Dot,
CONGRATULATIONS!!!
How much weight did you lose?
I'm 45 and have lost 68 pounds so far, but still have about 90 pounds to go.
I can already detect loose skin (loose flab actually) so can imagine I'll
have quite a bit at goal. My wife started higher than I did and has more to
lose; she is convinced that she'll have to have surgery to get rid of the
excess skin. I hope to not have surgery for the skin myself, but don't
really know.
Mark.

Congratulations Dot!!
I'm 53 and concerned about the loose skin as well.
I have a site bookmarked that explains what the author calls "The Myth of
Loose Skin"
http://www.bodyfatguide.com/LooseSkin.htm
You might want to take a look at it.

I gotta say that that guy doesn't make much sense. He says some
ridiculous things. Like he challenges people to show him a woman with
10% body fat that has loose skin, they shows dozens of celebrities
with 10%--NONE of which were EVER obese and went through drastic
enough weight loss to cause severely loose skin. SHowing people who
were always fit don't have loose skin just makes me think his argument
is unsupportable.
I wonder if anyone in the group lost like a 100lb, had bad loose skin
and it went away "quickly" by simply getting down to extremely low
BF%. The rub at even asking the question is how does one "quickly" get
to that low. Most of us so much time to actually get THAT buff that
the time we spent doing it alone would probably give the skin time to
retract. And it would have nothing to do with lower BF. I mean, its
not like if your plump UP to 20% BF you suddenly develop loose skin
and the fat hangs in loose sacks. Increased BF is not the cause of
loose skin! The sudden loss is. He also says a guy 12-15%BF might
have reached their goal and have flaps of skin, but bodybuilders think
12% is being fat, and 5% is good. ??!?? so .... in order to get rid of
loose skin guys have to have 5% BF?? I'm confused at what point that
statement was supposed to even make! There are BILLIONS of people with
non-bodybuilder BF%s and no loose skin!
I hope there are more reputable references to the subject online. I'm
already seeing sagging sacks on my thighs with closing in on 40lbs
down. By the time I reach (hopefully!!) 150lbs it could get gross!!

Yes....but your health will improve and the skin may shrink over time. That
part depends. you have no choice (IMO) but to lay that fear aside and
proceed on your course.

No, the idea is this guy says the reason behind loose skin is you
still have too much BF%. BODY FAT is CAUSING you to retain loose skin.
However by the time I get to the ridiculously low levels he talks
about time would have cured the problem--not being a bodybuilder.
Janet Jackson is one of the women he holds up as proof that bodyfat is
the "cause" for loose skin. Basically, "look at Janet--she doesn't
have loose skin!" It's silly. In the months & years it would take me
to be that buff, I would think time alone would solve the problem.

Janet Jackson also has some of the world's best plastic surgeons nipping and
tucking away at her non-stop. We all don't live in that world.

Did you notice where it said : "Celebrity weight and waist sizes are from
"Heavenly Bodies; Vital Statistics of 120 Stars"; National Enquirer, June
16, 1998"
Sadly, I dont have a lot of faith in anyone who has to resort to quoting the
Enquirer in a supposedly scientific study.
But, it would be sooooo nice to be assured the droopy skin was going to go
away eventually.

Yeah, it made everything he talked about totally suspect!

Yes, and since skin is NOT dead like hair, it contracts on its own. I
think every childbearing woman has proven that! The real question in
mine mind is, since many of us are dealing with losing lots of weight
is their something that can be done outside of surgery to encourage
tightening of skin--vitamins and such come to mind. I would doubt any
kind of "cream" since most of the "legitimate" creams are akin to
snake oil.

If you're packing and hauling stuff, you ARE doing weight training! Good luck
with the move, and take care of yourself -- moving is so EXHAUSTING and is such a
major disruption of your routines!
I'll never forget moving (in a hurry to leave my husband) and feeling exhausted,
sweaty, grimy and achey all over. I wanted a nice, soothing bath in the worst
way! I managed to use the last ounce of strength left in me to dig out a bath
towel and some jammies, then turned on the water and waited for it to heat up.
And waited. And waited. And waited. It NEVER warmed up. Turns out that PG&E
(Pacific Gas & Electric) had turned on the electricity, but not the gas.
ARRRRGGGGHHHH!!! Not only couldn't I have a nice soothing bath, I couldn't even
take a SHOWER! NOW when I move, that's one of the FIRST things I check :-)

-------------------------------
Congratulations Dot! As far as the skin problems are concerned maybe I
can shed a little light on it. When I was pregnant for the first time I
got really HUGE and after the birthing my stomach just laid there in
folds (I was 27 at the time), and it didn't snap back like I thought it
should, so I asked my obgyn about it. He told me that everyone has a
certain amount of elastin in their bodies, some more, some less. He said
that my body simply just didn't produce enough.
I have lost 79 lbs. since 08/01/03 and my stomach looks very flabby too.
(I'm 50)
When I went to my GP recently he agreed with my obgyn when he said that
the only thing that could be done for my excess skin was surgical
repair, since I still have a bit of a pouch there, even at my current
weight of 123 lbs. at 5'6".
You might be one of the lucky ones that tighten up. I did some, and
still might some more. Only time will tell.
Surgery is out of the question, it's just not worth it to me. If having
a flabby tummy is the only downfall of this healthy WOE I can live with
it.
Best Wishes; Marty

Thank you ALL for your very nice and supportive comments. I wish I had the
time to reply to each of you but I had another busy day yesterday packing
and hauling. The good side of that is guess what? I lost another whole
pound! I am 118 this morning! YIPEEEEEEEEEE! I really think activity and
drinking tons of water is a large key in weight loss. You're just not gonna
lose weight sitting around waiting for the calories to burn. And when I
don't have time to eat I chug a cup of water to fool my tummy into thinking
I am full. It's worked! Wish you all luck in your weight loss progress.
KEEP GOING!
