The local Wal-Mart started a large low carb section a few months
ago... and now they are selling much of the stuff for 50-75% off.

The manager of the local supercenter said LC sales are slower and
slower, so they will not be reordering most of the items. A lot of
what they had were the candy and snacks and bread that as JC would put
it "aren't low-carb" anyway, so it's no big whoop to me.

I am in kentucky, by the way, and don't know if this is more than a
regional thing.

I'm in Ohio and was at Wal-Mart this morning. I definitely noticed their
normal "low-carb" display was much smaller, moved out of the center isle to
a smaller out-of-the-way area, and seemed to be limited to high-carb/high
sugar alcohol items, which I won't buy anyway. Hope they keep their Diet
Rite sodas - they're so much cheaper at Wal-Mart than Krogers. There's
nothing else "low-carb" I will miss from there -- so maybe a high percentage
of low-carbers smartened up about those candy bars and stopped buying
them?!?

My H-E-B was missing nearly all of the LC ice cream they had just two weeks
ago. I was wondering if it was due to the impending labelling rules or
what.. I don't think the "fad is dying" this quickly do you?

I don't.   Just an adjustment.   My walmart sold out of the low carb
ice cream and bread and tortillas and is slow to restock.
Plenty of expensive candy bars left in the prescription drugs dept.

I'm sure they will. I've been buying Diet Rite at Wal-Mart for years. The cola
version anyway. It was the only diet soda I could stand, even when I was doing
low-fat/cal. Ironically, now that I'm eating LC, I just drink water, and almost
never buy it.

There are many more places to buy lc stuff.  Wal-Mart only sells stuff that
they can get in large quantities at low  low prices.  Companies who have
trouble meeting demand would rather sell to other companies where they can
maintain their margins.

The Hoods milk is still at the WMart in my part of Kentucky .
That's the main LC item I buy .
Thanks for the update .

My grocery can't keep Hood's in stock. I haven't had any for a couple

Yes, I will say that while I am always looking at things, I am a
label reader.  Hence, I may find it interesting that Entenmans
(sp?) has low-carb products, but I won't buy them.  Nor will I buy
the new Con-Agra frozen meals--or the Smart Ones, or the Lean
Cuisine ones.  I do buy Mike's, but they are too expensive, and I
think he's sneaked some nonfoods in.  I also am VERY happy to have
the "dairy beverage".    And I eat one ZCarb bar per week.  And I
have bought the new Heinz catsup and suspect I will keep buying
that.

The have Q&As on their website and don't recommend freezing it. If I
ever find it again, I'd hate to waste it finding out.

It seperates after freezing, but a stick blender fixes it right up, IME.

I like the Hood 2% Chocolate Milk. Sure is a nice treat at the end of a day.

I've been doing the low carb thing for about 9 weeks now. Loosing a lot. No
idea how much, because my fiance wanted to do it and I just started it to go
along for the ride. I hate weighing, but my belt is down four notches and
pants completely fall off. So something is working.

Anyway, after starting LC'ing I read a lot on it and one thing people say is
that the cravings for sweets goes away.  Oh man, not for me. Is this true
for anyone else?

For me, it depends what I am eating. Some foods cause craves. Too much
splenda does it for me. You might want to experiment by leaving out
some things and see if the sugar craves go away or get better.

My sweet tooth never went away, even after a couple years of low carbing,
but it did diminish, and I found I was happier with things less sweet than I
had previously liked. However I never reached a point where I didn't crave
something sweet from time to time.

Walmart is the only store around me that carries the red carton of
Hood's milk (whole) so I buy 2 at a time.  Hanniford sells the Hoods
also but only the 2% and the skim versions.  I also get the 4 net carb
Rye bread. Those are the only 2 low carb labeled foods I buy.  I learned
my lesson with the RS chocolates, they were well worth the gastro
distress  :)  but not the weight gains or cravings.  Now I make my own
chocolates, some with almonds in them  some with coconut  and some with
peanut butter and they are much tastier anyway.

I think this may because the real low carbers realize that much of what
dealers are selling as low-carb is overpriced and that much better low
carb products are available through careful shopping for normal
foods at the supermarket.

Whether or not this is the case, meat and produce will likely never go
out of style.

People seem to forget that anyway.  To me, that is the biggest perk of
LC is that there is simply no need or place for fake foods in the diet.
I've tried many diets where in order to stick to it you have to have a
shake or a bar and some other expensive gimmick, and it makes me wanna
barf.  The human body isn't designed to have some fake food concocted in
some anonymous lab, with 5 syllable ingredients a mile long.

With this diet, all I need to have handy is a supermarket.  Works for
me.... YMMV

I never shopped that aisle anyway. The Piggy Puffs, Nuts, and Soda Water are
always kept somewhere else. If they had any real food in the lo-carb
section, I would buy it, but it's all bars, powders, and shakes.

Piggy Puffs is (or at least was) a brand of pork rinds, back before they
were fashionable.

I was in Wal-Mart today looking for the Atkins Almond Crunch Cereal. It was
$3.99 here and the rest of the grocery stores had it for $4.99.  I was told
that I missed the clearance ($2.00 a box) and they were discontinuing the
Atkins Cereal products.  The supply of Hood milk was way down too, and had
been moved to a location usually for clearance

It seems that they treat diets as a seasonal item. I joked with the stock
gal that I did like the low carb products, but if your a serious dieter, you
eat less! 1 box of cereal goes a long way!  The only Grocery managers
smiling these days are in the produce, dairy and meat department.

I ended up in my local high priced health food store- She had what I wanted
on sale, and lots of other breakfast cereal options if I wanted to pay the
price. I still horde groceries like a squirrel in September. That, I don't
think will change.

Really?  I just heard they are getting a new line of bake mixes.
It does occur to me that as the stuff becomes available in other
stores, folks don't have to go to Wal-Mart to get it.

Veggies, meat, cheese and eggs at 50-75% off?  WOW!  I'm on the way!

Oh, too bad.  Junk food doesn't stop being junk food just because
someone slaps a low-carb claim on its label.  Doesn't even matter
if the claim is true or false, junk is still junk.  No lose then!
Yazaira - 26 Mar 2004 06:24 GMT
Hola,

I would not say that low carbing is ending, nor that is a
fad.  What I consider a fad are those funky new products
that were "low-carb".  Low carbers have existed for a long
time... what did they do in those times? Order a whopper and
throw the bun, make food home-made with natural food.

I know there are people with limited time to cook and these
products were a heaven for them.  Other then had the "low
fat" mentality. Remember? "It's low fat so I can eat the
whole thing"...  Some of these products were good when time
was limited to cook a meal, but were they healthy? or
processed food as well?

Just my thought...
