IN the radio there is an ad saying some LC diets require you to stay
under 36 carbs a day, and the strict ones require you to stay under 20
grams. I guess the number 20 comes from Atkin's induction, but were did
they get the "magic" number 36 from?

Protein Power's diet is 35 net grams of carbs.  Go Diet is 45 net
grams.  Schwarzbein Principle is 45 grams, but that doesnt include
free low carb vegetables.  I cant think of any others off the top of
my head.

Ok, I like the idea of experimenting, finding what works best, better
than pretending there's a magic number that works for everybody. If
there should be a number to go by, then a percentage makes more sense.

And that's why Atkins starts with 20 grams in the induction phase, and
then after 2 weeks instructs people to gradually increase the number
until the find the amount of carbs they feel most comfortable with.

It seems like a whole LOT of people, especially in the press, think
that the 2-week start phase of any low-carb diet represents the whole
thing.  The ones I regret the most are the ones that stay on the
lowest level of carbing, thinking that they'll lose weight faster.
I'm starting to find that if I have some controlled amount of carbs
(still experimenting with foods and amounts and times of day), my
ketosis strips get lighter but so do I.

My current epiphanies:  Sugar alchols are bad for me, unless I'm a bit
constipated.  (And even then, be careful!)  That Uncle Sam cereal
might be good for me (I felt good the next day), but a whole cup of it
at a sitting is too much.  I really like dried apricots and they don't
do me any harm if I just eat a handful.

Unless you're really "heavy".
With my 6'1" I started Atkins at 375pounds on Feb 15, 2004
Since the beginning I never exeeded 20carbs, often not even 15!
Now almost 6 weeks later I've lost 71pounds!!!
Same weight loss every week (within 10%)
As long as I keep loosing weight at this rate, what's against it.
I haven't felt so good in 20 years!
I surely will start building up the carbs later on, but for now it is fine
as it is.
And the way of life doing Atkins isn't as difficult as everybody said befor;
I love the food I am allowed to eat, although I must admit being a McDonalds
addict!
But the weightloss is so encouraging that I can even take a strall through a
McDonalds without the need to garb a Big Mac or a strawberry shake or
whatever.

You lost 71 lbs in 6 weeks?  That's a phenomenal rate!  It doesn't sound right --
in fact, it sounds pretty phenomenal even for a liquid fast.

That said, I'm glad you've been successful and feel great!

And lost another 2 pounds over the last 2 days which included an anniversary
diner party with a lot of delicious "normal" food. I just left out the
carbs..........
