Peter -- Here's a very belated thank-you for the great tip you posted last
year for easy cleanup of George Foreman grills.  I love it!

Previously, despite the supposed non-stick coating, I used to always have
to scrub rather hard to get it clean.  And when I was trying to decide
whether I was too lazy to cook something on it, I'd have to factor in the
clean-up effort -- now it's not even a consideration.  So I'm using it more
often than I had been before.

(For those who missed it, the tip was to soak a couple of paper towels in
cold water, and to place them on the grill as soon as you've unplugged it
and removed the food.  Put the cover back down.  [Big cloud of steam may
emerge.]  By the time you're finished eating, all the caked-on gunk is very
soft and loose and easily wiped up with a paper towel; no scrubbing needed
at all.)

Yep, works amazingly, doesn't it?

But I found an even better method now.   I gave away my GF after winning an
ebay auction for a Hamilton Beach grill -- very similar to GF except it has
removable grill plates that are dishwasher safe.   ;-)

I was considering getting one of those, until I tried your paper-towel
method.

Do you like it?  Does the non-stick coating stand up to the dishwasher
well?

Aargh!  No dishwasher!  The Hamilton Beach grills with the removable
plates are wonderful, but you've got to handwash the plates.  It's
easy because you can soak them, but the instructions are quite clear
about no dishwasher.  The plates have the same problem as the other
three grills I went through.  The nonstick comes off eventually.  I'd
love one that that didn't happen to.  I do use mine hard though.

Take care,
Carmen

Ah, ok, that sounds more like what I'm used to.  I've never put anything
with a non-stick coating into the dishwasher.  I clean my non-stick pans
gently by hand, and never use metal utensils on them, and they're as good
as new after many years of use.  But the coating on the GF is definitely
wearing off, because I had to scrub it so hard.  I wonder if it would have
stayed nice and un-worn if I had used the wet-paper-towel method right from
the start.

I AM the dishwasher, and it stands up to me pretty well.  ;-)

BTW, if GF comes out with removable grill plates, I'd go back to it.  The HB
ease of cleanup (and time) is a tradeoff for poorer performance.   It
doesn't seem to cook as evenly or conistently as the GF, and the top plate
doesn't "float" as well as GF to cook a thick steak or chicken breast.
