One of these days I am going to use them in a pot of chili. I have the
dry beans.

Good choice, I've used them in chili a number of times, very tasty indeed -
though not too often as I don't like to ingest too much soy.

Nobody here has a problem with soy. In fact, my mother has acres and
acres of soy beans. :)

Yeah, I used to cans in a batch of chili and it turned out great. Couldn't
tell the difference from kidney beans, really. I was thinking of trying to
make refried beans with them. Anyone have an idea how I could go about
that??

Eden makes a refried bean product which is half soy bean and half
regular beans. I haven't tried to make refried beans with the canned
black soy beans because they don't seem to get soft enough to mash well,
in my experience.

The Eden black soybeans are definitely crunchy, I agree. Lately I've only
been buying the ShariAnn's brand -- they are _much_ softer.
I get them at Whole Foods. I had heard last year some time that ShariAnn's
was going to discontinue them (and indeed, they are no longer listed on the
web site), and yet every time I go to Whole Foods, the cans have been
restocked. Well, I'll keep getting them while they last...

Huh. I've never seen them at Whole Foods here. What part of the world
are you in?

I'm in central Mass. I get them on my occasional trips to the Whole Foods
in Framingham (formerly Bread & Circus). I believe I also saw them when I
went to the Whole Foods in Bedford recently, but I'm not 100% certain.

Huh. I'll have to search more closely. Yes, ours used to be Bread &
Circus, too. Or "Breadsticks" as my b-i-l calls them.

When I made refired beans regularly years ago, I mashed up the cooked
pinto beans (salted to taste), added a substantial amount of Crisco, and
a chopped onion, then cooked everything for another hour. So, if I were
doing it now, I'd mash the black beans, add grease (lard? bacon grease?)
and cook for some time. And see what it tasts like. Don't know if
Crisco can be used, but am not sure. Can anyone tell me?
Bottom line is that refried beans are mashed beans and grease.... with
whatever spices you might want to add. If you try this and it works, I
will follow in your steps. I loved refried beans but haven't had them
for some time.

Trader Joe's is selling cans of "Refried Black Beans" under their own
brand name. The label says it's fat free and is "with Jalapeno
Peppers." The Carb information for 1/2 cup is 20 carbs and 6 dietary
fiber. The ingredients are: black beans, water, sea salt, spices,
Jalapeno peppers.

Those are black beans, not black SOY beans. Huge difference, carb-wise.

Be careful. Black beans are not the same as Black Soy beans. They are
much higher in carbs.
