Well, folks, this morning my friendly neighborhood scale told me I was down
30 pounds since 12/1/03. It feels pretty good. It's hard not to get
impatient - the changes in my body are so gradual that I can barely see them
and the folks I see every day don't really see them either. At the same
time, it's a good feeling to step back at a milestone like this and really
think about what 30 pounds means. I've lost a size or two in clothing.
I've lost the equivalent of my three-year-old nephew. I've lost three times
the weight of my cat. I've lost the equivalent of the satchel full of
casebooks I used to schlep around when I was a law student. I live on a
steep hill, and mr. carla says he can tell the difference in how fast I can
walk up the hill and that I'm less winded when we get home. It's a fair
point - dragging a 30 lb sack of lard up that hill would definitely slow me
down.
I've still got a long way to go, but I'm feeling pretty good saying goodbye
to those 30 pounds.

CONGRATULATIONS, Carla! 30 lbs is a real milestone in MY book! Losing 20 or
even 25 lbs is REALLY GOOD, but for some reason, passing 30 lbs strikes me as
SIGNIFICANT.

Great work, Carla! I've lost about that much myself, so I can
imagine how you feel.

Carla,
After I lost my first 28, I went to Wal-mart and picked up one of
those dog food bags. It felt great put a visual cue on my weight
loss. That bag was heavy...

Thanks, Yazaira. By the way, it's good to see you back in the group. I've
always enjoyed following your progress.
I "celebrated" my 30 pounds by buying a few much-needed better-fitting
outfits for work. I wasn't looking very professional in the big old clothes
I was swimming around it. Two new suits will help a lot.

Way to go, Carla! I like your analogies-- I'd love to lose three "cats".

Thanks, Piedlourde. You will definitely get there.
On the three cats, I keep trying to think of new ways to visualize the 30
pounds. It's so easy now that they are gone to forget they were ever there,
especially when I look in the mirror and still see a fat lady staring back
at me. It's been helpful to concretize it a bit.
