Jim Bard - 28 May 2004 20:08 GMT I'm of late developing the opinion that if it doesn't require refrigeration, it's probably not something I want to eat. Bit that's just me.
My deep freeze looks like a butcher shop and my fridge looks like a tropical rain forest. I'm pretty happy with that. Used to be if I found something green in the fridge it meant tossing on fridge-cleaning day.

It doesn't take much "nerve" to point out simple facts. It's "You're a JC follower" by the way, and getting "your" and "you're" mixed up is one of your common mistakes that makes your posts 3rd gradish. You _don't_ consistently use good grammar and spelling, it's a fact. You can't make it not a fact just by getting mad at me.

That's just a fact like that I have brown eyes and two feet. I don't think I am stupid, or not any more so than the average person, but that's subjective, and if that's the opinion you have of me then you are welcome to it. It is a fact that you often write poorly, and it is my opinion that your writing is around a 3rd grade level. I say "opinion" because I have not analyzed your writing in depth and compared it to writings of typical 3rd graders, because it's not that important to me. It is also my opinion that you are defensive, overly sensitive, and immature. In my opinion, a mature response to someone saying you write like a 3rd grader would have been something like "Yeah, I do make a lot of spelling and grammar mistakes" or "It's because I am young at heart." But you chose to get angry and make a big issue about it as if someone had deeply wounded you. You're really prickly and kind of twitchy. Do you get this upset at someone if they point out that you have toilet paper stuck to the bottom of your shoe?

It shouldn't matter, but it sometimes does. Most people here don't know each other outside of this newsgroup, so we depend on clues of intelligence level (for various reasons). We all try to attach a degree of credibility to whatever we read.
Having said that, I'm not an exclusionist person by nature. I'd rather point out to someone willing to listen the difference between to, two, and too, rather than imply ignorance. To me, it is just a way of being exclusionary ("There's us smart folks, and those dumbfu... uh dumb folks"). After all, we can usually understand what is being communicated.
I know plenty of PhD's that have extremely substandard writing skills, and it means nothing about their intelligence. Rather, it means more about their level of attention to that particular area. In a newsletter I publish, a Neurosurgeon submits articles that I constantly have to edit, and I'm by no means an editor. I don't think it makes him an idiot. I think other things, but not that he's an idiot.
On the internet, you'll find there are plenty of people, not just JC supporters, who feel if you don't take your posts seriously enough to give them some attention, you shouldn't expect anyone else to take them seriously either. The worse your writing, the greater the need for content.
-- So, have all your Low Carb questions been answered so far?

It's fine if you don't care about grammar. If you don't care one way or the other, why not just do it right? It will help people understand you better. Remember, there are folks here who do not speak English as their first language. Do you know how hard it is to understand a foreign language when a lot of the words are misspelled or misused? Someone may miss something important. For instance, I don't understand what you mean by "you and he go to places with people that is not nice." Maybe you have said something really insightful here that would help me grow as a person, but it comes across as gibberish. It _seems_ like you are saying that JC and I go to places with people, and that's not nice. I think it _is_ nice to go to places with people, I went out to a movie with my sister today, and it was nice. I don't understand why you think it isn't nice to go places with people. So I assume that wasn't what you meant, but I have no clue what you actually did mean. I'm not saying you need to be perfect, heck everyone misspells a word here and there, that's normal for an informal type of writing. But the way you write is beyond the pale, it looks like you don't care if people even understand you. It's not nice.

Well, tornadoes are of shorter duration but every bit as scary and destructive, if not moreso. And, don't even get me started on earthquakes! I was in SoCal during earthquake Sunday 12 years ago.
I've been thinking about buying the pouches of tuna. In an emergency it might be easier to open those, add a packet of mayo and mustard, then "knead" the pouch to mix everything. Has anyone tried this? I do have a small can opener in my hurricane kit, just in case, but the pouches seem to make more sense in this situation.

First lesson: this is an unmoderated newsgroup. That means anyone can post anything they want, it is uncensored.
Second lesson: You can read and respond to whatever is posted here. You can also choose to ignore anything that is posted here.
Third lesson: If you post a question, you are going to get some people who don't understand your question, some people throwing insults out, some people making puns or other jokes, some people slamming each other for misspellings, some people going off on tangents that have nothing to do with your question, and maybe, just maybe, a gem or two of helpful advice buried in the middle of all of it. And then of course you'll get posts arguing with the advice and calling it a bunch of crap, and citing 20+ websites backing up the claim, and then you'll get 20+ websites rebutting the first claim, and eventually someone will compare someone to Hitler or Sadaam Hussein and it's all just downhill from there.
Fourth lesson: google, as in www.google.com archives usenet posts. If you go to "groups" then "advanced groups search" you can type in this group and search for posts in numerous ways. By poster, by date, by heading, by keyword, etc. and you can easily and quickly find answers to questions that have already been asked. You can also, if you're a stalker, go read every thing I've ever posted and learn much more about me than any sane person would want to know, and then you would see how amazingly cool I really am.
:o)
