Couple of New Products

Hello,
I found a couple of new products that might fit in well for those
pressed for time or, as in my case, looking for foods to have around for
my "go kit" that provide something more nourishing than the meal
replacement bars.  They'd be great for your emergency supplies (which
everyone should have because emergencies like hurricanes, tornadoes,
floods - weather events that can deprive you of power for extended
periods - don't generally send much advance notice).
The first is a shelf stable pouch product by Banquet called "Meal
Toppers", the relevant variety is the Beef.  It's essentially a beef
stew sans the potatoes.
The stats:
Servings Per Pouch: 4 (0.5 cup)
Calories per serving: 60
Calories from fat: 5
Total Fat: 0.5g
    Saturated Fat: 0g
Cholesterol: 5mg
Sodium: 620mg
Total carbohydrate: 6g
    Dietary fiber: 3g
    Sugars: 3g
Protein: 10g

The second is a precooked ground beef in a pouch made by Jack Link's.  I
didn't buy any of it, so I haven't got the stats here in front of me.
As I walked down the aisle in Wally World I saw at least three different
varieties: Italian (they had it by the spaghetti sauces), Mexican (by
the salsa) and regular.  They had them on "hangers".

Hope this helps someone,
Carmen

The carb count may be low, but that is one HELL of a lot of sodium --
for a half a cup of product!  Which is the problem with shelf-stable
products like this. They load 'em up with sodium as a preservative.

Hi Dawn Taylor,
On Sat, 8 Nov 2003 21:10:39 GMT, you held up the following for
inspection:

That's the reason I included the sodium amount.  For some people it
would present a real problem (AKA Bloat-o-Rama <G>).  For emergency
rations and/or camping food it's good enough for me.  I'm not sodium
sensitive most of the month.  I wish I could find a product that used to
be made for the Army for MREs.  They were dehydrated hamburger patties,
and I'd dearly love to lay in a supply of them as emergency rations.
Low weight, in low weight packaging and high protein - three of my
requirements.  I'm going to keep looking for them.

Take care,
Carmen
