Hi all,

I've been a longtime lurker here, and decided to post something today
in the "Lost Control" thread, so figured I may as well introduce
myself.

I have using the Weight Watchers points plan (the old one, not Flex
Points) since the fall of 2002.   In 2000, after buying life
insurance, I found that I was paying six times as much as my wife,
largely because of my weight (362).   Figuring that life insurance
actuarials know something about mortality that perhaps I forgot, I
decided to lose weight...when my wife and I were married in 1994, I
was around 300 lbs., so I put on 60 lbs. in six years.   When I
graduated college in 1992, I was around 260 or so.   Desk jobs
obviously go right to my gut.  ;)   I'm very tall, so that helps, but
when you're buying size 56 pants, and you used to be a 38, you know
something's changed in your life.

I first went to a local "fat loss coach" who worked with me to get
down to 294 through a rigid system of eating that was a three day
eating cycle designed to keep blood sugar levels fairly constant.   I
couldn't get down lower than that, but it was 70 lbs. less, so I was
at least satisfied in the 'big picture' progress.

His plan worked well when I was home and self-employed....when I got
into the workforce and basically stopped going to him, I went back up
to 340 in fairly short order.   Following my wife's lead, I went on WW
in the fall of 2002, and love the plan.  The flexibility is great, and
it works, because I'm down to 290 now, and have been as low as 275.

For most of the past year, though, I've been stuck in the 280-290
range.   When I'm faithful to it, it works....but then I hit a block
in the road and go back to my old bad habits.   I had hoped to start
anew in March and break through that 275-280 barrier, but I'm back up
to where I started.   There's obviously psychological issues at play
here in addition to the physical ones....and it's a day-to-day
struggle, as you all know.

Anyway, enough about me.....you've all been a great inspiration, and
have helped me in my lurking search for ideas, and it's nice to be
here with you all.

Welcome John. Thanks for delurking and introducing yourself. You've made great
progress to date. I hope you're giving yourself props for not letting the scale
creep higher.

If you've been reading regularly, you know that there are a few of us who
struggle to get past barriers of one sort or another from time to time. One
thing I'm learning this time that I never "got" before is just don't quit. Keep
doing the best you can and keep posting.

I'll echo that!  I'm stuck on a plateau myself at the moment, groping
round for the edge!  It's hard, but I just keep reminding my self that I
feel better, I LOOK better, and I'm 40 lbs lighter than I was when I
started!

I think the 'just don't quit' thing is the key. I went up and down
around 200 for 6 months, then it all came together, and the downward
path started again.
You've got down 70 pounds from the start, so you are well over half
way. The rest will come off easy enough if you persist.
You may have to find a way to make WW work for you now that you aren't
self employed any more, but I'm sure people here will be able to give
you some help.

Good luck

Hi John, from the queen of the people who had weight/psych issues :).  I
know of what you speak.  I also spent a bunch of years in the partly
successful limbo area.  This may seem very simplistic, but the thing that
finally got through to Me, that got me off high center, was realizing that
it would not be painless to get into the "normal" range.  Then I made a
commitment to actually attend meetings and pay until I reached goal, and
being a financially frugal sort this really mattered.  And the other thing
was sitting down and making the storyboard that WW suggests, after I
discovered that relapse in a plan such as this is to be expected and planned
for.  (I got that piece of info from the book "changing for good".)  My
storyboard gave me a visual of the reasons I wanted to lose, what happened
in the past when I went off track, and a plan to get back ON track.  I
finally got to goal last August.  It Can be done.

Glad to see a lurker come out of the shadows and join us in our journey. I
think all of us have experienced plateaus at some point in time. I seem to
hit one every other month these days. My weight loss is good for a month and
I want to speed things up so I cut back on my points and the next thing I
know I have gotten myself into starvation mode. So eat all of points plus
some of your flex points to keep your metabolism going. Eat a good variety
of meals as that seems to help too. And most of all don't give up.

Just wanted to say "thanks" for all the support.   I definately give
myself credit for getting this far, and I remember how it felt at 362.
The pants and clothes from that era in the closet are there for
daily reminders, too.

I'm really hopeful that by the end of the year, I'll be at my 250
goal.....that's a realistic target to shoot for, and one I really want
to hit.
