I was pleased to see that bananas were on the Core foods list, so
indulged a bit (I love bananas!). From my testing I've pretty much
concluded that bananas are a "trigger" food. That is, after eating one I
get hunger cravings and want to eat more.
Last week I ended up eating 3 or 4 a day!
This week I've cut out bananas to see what kind of a difference it makes
and I definitely feel less hungry throughout the day.
Do other people have the same problem with bananas?
I do like them though. But if I buy them from now on I think I need to
occasionally buy one of those individually wrapped single bananas rather
than a whole bunch.

I'm the only one in our house that eats bananas. I only buy 3 or 4 at a time
or they will turn brown before I get to them. I keep them in the refrig and
use the out-of-sight-out-of-mind routine to limit myself to one a day. I've
even put them in the freezer to use in smoothies but that was a disaster.

Just FYI, bananas should never be kept in the fridge - it's too cold and
makes them go black and icky quicker. Bananas produce a gas called
ethylene when ripening, so to avoid to keep the gas free from the fruit,
a banana hook is the best way to keep them fresh.

That certainly is interesting tidbit of info. I have been putting them in
the refrig because for me they last longer that way. I'll have to do a test
next time I buy bananas to see which batch goes black faster.

In my experience, when you put bananas in the fridge the skin goes dark a
lot faster but the fruit itself doesn't get overripe as fast. So, if I want
them for a fruit bowl or other use where the appearance in the peel is
important I keep them at room temperature. Otherwise if they are ripe and I
can't eat them right away, I refrigerate.

Yes, that is my experience. I don't care if the skin is brown but I can't
stand mushy insides.

There was a commercial on tv here years ago - I think it was by
Chiquita - 'and you must nevah evah evah put your bananahs in the
refrigeratah.' We keep ours out on the counter and they never last
long enough to go bad.

I use a piece of yarn hung on a hook in the kitchen. Works like a banana
hook but was free.

Hi Doug,
Bananas are quite high GI, (for fruit) so perhaps thats the problem? I find
high GI fruits definately spark my appetite, especially mango and pineapple
:-(

Bananas are wonderful for me. I start the day with porridge & a small banana
and it keeps me going with no cravings until lunch - even if I have to take a
late lunch. Bananas are an ideal food for cyclists too.
Cheers, helen s

I also love bananas but don't have a crave problem after eating one, or half
of one. May I suggest you learn how to live with or ignore "cravings?"
One friend chews sugarless gum when her cravings get bad, she doesn't give
in and start *eating* something.

Even knowing the steps of dealing with cravings, does not mean you are able
to perform those steps. It took me 26 years to quit smoking and I never
enjoyed it, was just a habit I picked up in high school. I had to retrain
my mind about smoking, which I finally did. Then after 3 months they closed
the pool at the complex and I put on close to 75 pounds. While being able
to 'deal' with the craving for smoking, I never got over the hand to mouth
bit. I now try to crochet while watching TV instead of feeding my face. I
also go to bed earlier. But telling someone to 'deal' with cravings is a
lot easier said than done.

** I also quit smoking after 25 years. I know what "cravings" are, believe
me. The patch doesn't stop the cravings and the cravings for a cigarette
would come back months afterward. Knowing they would pass, just like
cravings for food or certain foods, I waited them out as my Dr. suggested.
It's been years now since I craved a smoke. There is self control involved
here.

** Well that sounds great to me! :-)
I

** Of course it's not easy! That's where self control comes in. I'm no
stronger or weaker than anyone else. You think I don't sit here some days
craving, wishing, dreaming of a bowl of peanuts or potato chips - a bowl of
vanilla ice-cream with hot fudge dribbling down the sides? I don't buy
them, keep them in the house or try to just eat 15 or 20 of them... I know
about all or nothing.... :-) I'll admit I wasn't a big muncher/snacker
but there were times I just had to have those nuts or chips.

Don't want to worry you, but my aunt, who's a health food nut, recently
put herself in hospital due to over-indulging in bananas. Turns out
they're high in potassium - which is good in small quantities, but if
you eat a lot of bananas every day, particularly if you also eat a lot
of tomatoes and/or licorice, you could end up over-dosing on potassium,
which causes heart tremors.
I strongly suggest you go on a banana-free diet this week and then
reintroduce them one per day.

Some people also take a multi-vitamin and mineral supplement which includes
potassium. I think your advice is excellent.

Bananas are a trigger for me. I would have no problem eating a whole
bunch. Core says to eat until satisfied - that would never happen with
me and bananas so I just avoid them.

I love bananas and it is my snack of choice now you could buy the bananas
and use a marker to write when you plan to eat them, that way you are
reminded to not over indulge, good luck, Lee
