Once again a stressful family situation has sabotaged my efforts.  A few
weeks ago my grandmother that lives with me began to feel under the weather.
Last Friday she had a temperature, pain in her lower abdomen and lower back
and said she could feel a "lump" in her abdomen that shouldn't be there.  I
took her to the emergency room and after several tests they said she needed
surgery to remove a mass in her lower abdomen.  Now, a few of you here know
what I went through after my husband had his appendix out here 2 1/2 years
ago - and the complications that ensued.  Well....same surgeon, so of course
I refused to allow the surgery here and had her transferred to the care of a
surgeon in the city.

As it turned out she had a grapefruit size tumor on her large bowel - that
had ruptured before he opened her up.  He removed about 2-3 feet of her
bowel and the tumor - that may be cancerous - we don't know yet.  She's
recovering nicely now although her bowels haven't begun to work yet -
hopefully today.

I spent the whole day Saturday sitting in emergency, most of the day Sunday
waiting for her to have her surgery, worked on Monday and spent the day
Tuesday at the hospital again.  Needless to say my weight loss efforts are
not going well at the moment and I weighed in this morning (two days late)
at 198, so up 4 lbs.

Thanx for sharing. Don't be too hard on yourself about having to lose
weigh despite the circumstances. Nobody blames you for concentrating on
your grandmother's health instead of your own weightloss. Let's hope
your grandmother's tumor isn't cancerous and that she'll fully recover
so you can enjoy each other's company for a long time coming.

I'm sorry to hear about your grandmother Brenda, I hope she has a quick and
full recovery. Also that your life becomes less stressful. As for the weight
gain, I know it's easy for me to say but try not to get to down about it.
You have had far more important things to be thinking about.
Take care and try ( I know it isn't easy) to get a little bit of quality
time to yourself.

I'm so sorry to read about your grandmother.  I am glad you chose the
larger hospital facility although that could not be easy due to the
commute up there.

A friend and I were just talking about living in idylic, rural
settings but about access to medicine - it is definitely a tradeoff.

I wish her and you the best.  And don't eat the hospital food!!!! (G)

Sorry to hear about your grandmother. I hope she has a speedy recovery and
that the tumor is not cancer. You made the right decsion in switching
hospitals. I know that eating right is difficult right now so just do the
best you can. Some of your gain may be due to not drinking enough water
causing some water retetion from the hospital food. Hang in there.

Geeze. That's awful. I'm sending you a hug and some good karma. I know
you're worried about your grandmother, but you won't be much good to
her if you don't take care of yourself. You're important too. I'll be
thinking about you and hope things start improving soon for your
grandmother.

I hope you grandmother will make a speedy recovery, Brenda.  My 12yo
daughter was in the hospital for over 3 weeks last summer after surgery, so
I know what it's like to spend a lot of time there.  What amazes me is that
a place that centers around health and medicine can offer such terrible
choices in its cafeteria on a daily basis!  The only alternative to the
lousy cafeteria food is vending machines.  Great.  In addition to the lack
of healthy food choices, I also found that I was eating to combat stress,
fatigue and sheer boredom.  The lack of activity while sitting in various
waiting & hospital rooms didn't help either.  By the second week, I did
manage to get to the grocery store and load a back-pack full of fruit,
granola, nuts, bottled water, etc., and that helped a great deal when those
kind of "munchies" were available.  I would still eat when I felt the urge,
but it helped that I had some healthy alternatives.  Ultimately, we all need
to do whatever we need to do to get through those difficult family crises
and find our stronger days.  God's speed and blessings to you and your
grandmother.
