Hi
I have wrote many times here, mostly happier times. I joined WW in 2003 at
the weight of 225, made goal last year at 155. I had held that until 3
months ago and it slowly started creeping back up. I know weigh 170 and I
don't know what to do. I have many health problems but can't blame it all on
the meds I take, maybe 2 or 3 pounds. I still exercise 5 times a week at a
gym, 40 minutes on a elliptical trainer and lift weights. I have tired both
programs and no matter what I am still gaining weight and the scary thing
is I really don't seem to care right now. I have had people say make sure
you eat all your points, I eat at the low end, always have, but I tired
higher, gained even more, tried the same as before and I am still slowly
gaining. I have really bad rheumatoid arthritis but none of the meds I take
cause weight gain, so I can't blame it on hat. I took a week and even
counted all the bites taste and licks still no gain but no loss. I am
scared to death to get as heavy as I was before but why I don't seem to be
motivated I don't know. I have wonderful support, great friends, I guess I
am just so upset with myself for letting it get out of control again.
Are there those who have felt this way here and if so what did you do ?
Sometimes when I come home I just want to go and hide and go to bed, then I
know I won't be temped to eat at least. I know that I am a person who eats
here and there but it is nothing different, I did that also when I was
losing before. Who knows I just guess I needed to vent.
I go to the meetings have a great leader and she is very encouraging but
then why I am still gaining, I would really like some motivational advice,
thanks in advance.

People react to different meds in different ways. Even if your doctor is
saying you won't gain weight on it, it's still a possibility. Meds put
65 lbs on me and another med in the same class that was supposed to
cause weight loss only helped me maintain the weight I was at. I was
told another med that I had taken does not cause weight gain but when I
researched it (www.rxlist.com), it did list weight gain as a possible
side effect. I managed to get the weight off when I switched to a med
that had weight loss as a side effect (so much so that anorexics are not
recommended for that med).
I went off all the meds a while back and 30 lbs went on literally
overnight (the med was keeping the weight off while I continued to eat
like a horse). I'm working to get that off now.
Check the meds you are taking with that website. It'll give you a clear
indication as to whether or not the drugs you're taking have weight gain
as a side effect. Some have extremely low instances of weight gain (and
that can most likely be attributed to outside factors) but if you find
anything of concern, print it off and check with your doctor.
The doctor can better advise you and recommend solutions. If you haven't
already, perhaps you should consider getting your thyroid checked as
well (or rechecked if it has been a while).
And don't give up. If eating within your points limit is putting on
weight, imagine how much faster it would go on if you started to eat the
way some of us used to.

Man that's gotta be frustrating !
You're trying still though and that's half the victory (even if it doesn't
feel like it sometimes).. is your work out routine always the same ? try
changing it up... change intensity.. time.. frequency..
Point-wise have you tried changing the amount from day to day ? like one low
day.. one higher.. I'm not talking excess either way.. just variety..
As for motivation.. they say it's a fire from within.. and I KNOW you've
got it inside of you.. Take time to sit down and think this over.. write
down WHY you want to do this... what you're doing that doesn't work.. what
you're doing that works.. and finaly what you HAVE TO DO... post it
somewhere.. at the fridge.. at your desk.. whatever !
Point is you have to want it enough.. what was the good sides of being
lighter ? write them down !
Finaly.. all you can do is do it.. if you step aside the track.. jump right
back on.. and keep at it.. Motivation won't "appear" to you suddently.. you
gotta force it out of you.. and you CAN ! that's the great thing.. Ask you
leader about "Motivating Strategy".. that's one of the tools for living I
use a lot to keep me motivated.. look at the other ones !!!! the tools are
there, use them !

Willow has a point. There is a site that tells about the Wendie Plan.
(from the website)"The Wendie Plan is very simple. You follow a simple
plan of eating. You eat your regular foods that you have on WW. You work
within your point range. You drink the water, get some exercise, etc.,
etc., etc. What is different? You alternate the amount of points you use
each day."
I've heard from a lot of folks that the Wendie Plan is good way to break
a plateau. Here's the site for you to read up on it, it's worth a try
anyway..
Good luck! http://www.stormpc.com/ww/wendie_plan.htm

Have you gone to a doctor and had a full physical to include thyroid
testing? I'd start there.

It sounds like you are gaining about 1 pound a week. 500 calories a
day above maintenance.
Obviously your meds are one place to start. Talk to your doctor and
research the drugs on the internet. It may be that your drugs do make
you put on weight despite what your doctor said initially.
Also do a sanity check on how much you eat, and compare that with your
BMR.
http://www.exrx.net/Calculators/CalRequire.html
Or alternatively tell us your height, weight and age, and how many
points/calories you eat on an average day.
Use fitday or similar to log EVERYTHING you eat.
When you track what you eat beware that most people are absolutely
terrible at estimating how much they eat. I think the idea is that if
you minimize what you own up to on paper it somehow will affect what
you weigh. Alternatively people seem to be ashamed about the mcdonalds
they ate last thursday. So be objective in what you record, if
necessary just report the calories not the content:).
If you are eating at BMR or below it's not a great idea to suggest
eating much less, and would point to a medical problem. If you are
above BMR then eating less is probably the answer.

Thank you all for your words of encouragement. I have checked with my doc,
and do already take thyroid. It is just a little low normal. The meds are
methotrexate, a chemo drug which does not put on weight at all, and I am
being treated for TB positive skin test, that med doesn't have weight issues
either. I don't know. I am going to try and write everything down, drink
lots of water!! I do drink a lot now but more can't hurt and really
encourage myself.

Most illnesses can cause water retention - it's a natural response to
your body being under pressure. I've got a terrible cold at the moment,
and I put on 2lbs literally over-night. I've been really good too, which
is discouraging, but I'm sure I'll lose it again, just as fast, as soon
as the cold starts receeding/

I can understand your frustration. I see that you got your thyroid checked.
The fact that it is a little low might be part of the problem. I would
discuss this with your doctor.
On the food front, as ray indicated you appear to be eating about 500 cals
above maintenance. You might try weighing and measuring everything you eat
and drink. Sometimes estimating a portion size can result in 100-200 extra
calories in a meal that we did not think that we ate. If you under estimate
the points on a consistant basis then you might actually be eating too many
points without realising it. The first thing my leader always asks us is
"are we sure our trackers are accurate?" Did we coutn every last olive in
our salad, etc? Little things add up. How about posting a typical day's menu
with portion sizes and points for us to look over. Maybe someone will have
some ideas.
As a side note, in addition to the water, are you getting your 5
fruits/veggies and 2-3 dairy servings in each day? They are now recommending
2 teaspoons of healthy oil each day. Are you varying your meals from day to
day? I know that if I have the same breakfast or lunches day after day my
body stops losing. Try having something different thing every day and not
reapeating a meal for 3 days. Our bodies get used to where and how many
points we give it and hold on to the food. We have to keep it guessing to
keep the weight loss going.
