Hi guys,
Last week I posted about calories on the machine and was going to step
class. Well, I was so motivated a week and a half ago...but it's dried
up and I haven't done anything since last Thursday.
What do you do to get yourself excersising? Once I'm there, it's not
big deal...the challenge is getting going!
Help!

I think most people find it a problem, I certainly did. I can use the
stationary bike for a while if I have a short term goal, but doing it
long term is just not for me.
I found that I was interested in weights, so I do that instead. It's
just a matter of finding something, anything that either you like or
at least can live with. Walking is a great start, and the list is
endless. Anything that gets you off the couch and sweating is good.

That's the key....remembering how good it feels once you get going. I
burn that into my mind and on the days I just say 'shag it' I remember
that instance and it always gets me going. It works really well for
walks outside...just remember that perfect day, the birds, sunshine and
the wind and voila...I'm outside for a walk even at -11 and snow :)

I made it a habit. I figured out the easiest form of exercise for me and a
time that it fitted into my day (a 30-45 minute walk before breakfast).
Getting up 30 minutes earlier was hard at first but after a few months of
sticking with it, it became almost harder not to do it. It was certainly
better than trying to go after work when all the "but I so tired" excuses
kick it. Walking was easiest because all I had to do was roll out of bed,
get into my gear and go - no having to go to a gym with all the associated
rigmarole.
If going to the gym is too hard (and trust me, it was for me too!), try just
walking around your neighbourhood. It will at least get you moving.

Walking before breakfast wouldn't work for me, something about walking at
4:30AM just is not too appealing ;) I usually do it after the kids have
gone to school which is about 2 hours after DH leaves for work. He calls me
old fashioned cause I still like to get up with him, have breakfast with him
and pack his lunch and see him off. On days I am really tired the couch
serves as a temp bed for a short nap.

It really is whatever works for you in your circumstances. I have no kids
to get off to school, and the DBF is still snoring in bed while I go for my
walk, have breakfast and read this newsgroup :) The mornings are the
quietest time around here. Admittedly getting up at 6ish to go for my walk
is getting less appealing now - the days are getting shorter, and the sun is
just in the process of rising down here!

Whatever exersise you decide to do you must simply see it as a must. Dont
think of it as you have a choice any more just as eating is something you
HAVE to do. By all means allow your mind to think " I dont feel like it
tonight " but answer straight back with " But I HAVE to "
Most of us dont feel like going to work but we all do. You have to get your
exersise into that mindset. Its now something you HAVE to do.
Then take a look at the results in a few months time and you will feel a
real sense of achievement and a real desire then to keep it up no matter
what.
Good luck.

You have to make it an obligation.. put it in your planner, and NO MATTER
WHAT you do it.. no questions.. no "what if I go later" no "I'll do it
tomorrow"... it's what you HAVE TO DO.. and you HAVE TO DO IT NOW !
pay someone to kick your @ss every morning.. that's another option ;op

I make an exercise date with my former coworker to meet at Curves most
mornings. Its the only way either one of us gets out of the house some days.
We encourage each other and so far it is working.

I don't do much indoors - just too boring.
I like walking and will walk where I can at lunch hour. I also take
it to extremes by hiking and x-country skiing and biking.
As others have said, find something you like or can live with doing.
Also finding a partner sometimes helps get you out to meet them and do
whatever together.

I find that the best way to get yourself exercising is to get an
exercise partner. I go to Curves with a friend and what I find is
that, if I was planning to go alone, I could just "change my mind" if I
was feeling lazy or depressed or whatever. But if I am planning to
meet my friend there, I will drag myself there rather than cancel on
her.

My exercise partner frequently does not show up. Today was one of those
days. I went anyway and joined in other conversations with the women there.
It still gets me there most mornings.

Get a dog - although be aware the large breeds and toy breeds should not
be exercised that much for the first 7-8 months (a couple of 15-20
minute walks per day, as guided by your vet).
Still, two 20 minute walks a day is more than I'm used to, and it is
steam driven (ie labrador driven).

Its ironic, I hardly ever used to exersise and now I cant do without it. I
feel sluggish and lazy if I dont now. A fortnight ago I dislocated my
knee-cap and am currently recovering and its killing me not being able to
train. For the past 12 months I have been training twice a week in Karate
and have been doing weights at home as well as working on a heavy bag almost
every night.
My knee is still badly swolen after 2 weeks but already im back on the
weights and am hoping to be back on the bag at the weekend. Unfortunately
Karate may be some time away :o(
What I am trying to say is if you keep at it for the initial period, you
will just hit a point were you cant do without it anymore and it will
literally become a part of your day as much as breathing. 12 months ago I
would have loved an excuse like a busted knee, but now im pushing myself
more than I should to be truthful.
I guarentee if you stick to it religiously for 3 weeks, you would then find
it harder to stop than to continue.
