Pedometer -- 10,000 steps

T & D - 21 Feb 2005 19:24 GMT Hi all,
I got a pedometer the other day and I think I must just be a slug. You're supposed to aim for 10,000 steps per day. The first day I got around 700 steps, so I figured today I would walk on the treadmill for 30 minutes and I'd probably have the steps I need for the day -- wrong! I've only got about 4,000 steps. Does anybody know how they came up with the 10,000-step figure? Like, is it supposed to burn so many calories or is it equal to 1 hour of exercise or what?

I confirmed that it counts my steps correctly but to double what I did would simply not fit into my day. I'd have to walk for an hour and a half to come close.
Right now, it's a novelty just to give me an idea of how far I walk and how many calories I burn just by walking around. I don't factor them into my activity points unless it's actual exercise like that 2.5 km walk

Lipgloss Junkie - 21 Feb 2005 20:26 GMT I got a pedometer and had the same result - 5 to 6K steps a day...not 10,000! Do what you can do...if you're excersising and following WW you're doing well!

I now officially have every gadget necessary to lose weight -- pedometer, ww materials, right food, scales to weigh food on, cookbook to cook low cal, Tanita scales to weigh my butt on -- LOL, treadmill, tapes to do aerobics, handheld weights, membership at the Y. Now if I can just get the brain going in the right direction....I might be able to put it all to use for the good.

Willow - 21 Feb 2005 21:07 GMT It's the little things that make a difference ! park away from the door.. take the stairs, walk around...
My favorite thing to do is to bring my laundry upstairs one piece at a time ! hehehe
I average 9000 to 13000 steps a day... built it up gradually though..

I would have to walk for about 1 1/2 hours per day to get it all in (like another poster pointed out).
The good part is that it really has made me aware of what a couch potato I am. The hubby was picking on me the first day when I told him that I only had about 300 steps at that point in the day and he said, just go from the couch to the kitchen, and then back from the kitchen to the couch about oh, say, 2,000 more times. Hmmph! I hate it when he's right.

Willow - 21 Feb 2005 22:52 GMT It takes you either 1 1/2 hour walk... or 3 30 minutes walks.. or 6 15 minutes walk or 9 10 minutes walks... or 18 5 minutes walk... see what I mean ?
It's adding every little bit that matters.. put it on when you first get up and take any oppurtunity to walk you can find, if you work at an office.. use the bathroom at the other end of the place instead of the one right by your desk...
Things like that..

Yes, Will, I think I got it, by golly. I did 9,000 steps today. I marched in place while I did dishes and I walked up and down the hall when I was watching TV. This is doable and it gives me instant feedback. I love it! But I'm still debating bringing up one piece of laundry at a time -- LOL. That seems like a lot of work. I'm so used to saving steps and doing several things as I go through rooms (and I'm up off the couch already) so as to *save* time and steps. Gotta get outta that.
Thanks again!

As the only female in the house it is challenging to get in when you need too. And with all the water I drink well it has to go somewhere.;) Adele

[quoted text clipped - 16 lines] > > Debbie Adele Virtue - 22 Feb 2005 15:26 GMT I have had mine for about 4 months and I still am not anywhere near 10K steps. But I started out at less than .5 miles, now I am up to about 1-1.5 miles per day. This is not walking, but just making an effort to park further from stores, do my own fetching instead of sending the kids. Not putting off getting something until I need more than one thing in the same area, and little things like that. I keep a journal in my PDA of my steps and average them every 3 days. It is nice seeing the number climb a little. I estimate that for me to have a 10K step day it would be close to 4 miles. Closest I have come is 3.5 miles when I was christmas shopping. I figured that it is something to work towards, but I will not kill myself getting there. I also don't count it as exercise for points, just a new way of doing things. One of these days I will get my bike back out of the shed and start cycling again. That is something I haven't done in ages too. Adele

If it's more, that's progress. 10,000 steps per day might be your ultimate goal, but it might be a year away! Set yourself intermediate goals, just as you do for weightloss.

Therein lies the problem. I am very impatient. I'm not looking forward to dancing around the TV again all night tonight. I have such little staying power with this stuff.
OTOH, I've eaten very good today and I've done 30 minutes of continous walking, but the pedometer only says about 4,300 steps right now. Pffft!

[quoted text clipped - 5 lines] > many calories or is it equal to 1 hour of exercise or what? > Debbie I average 10,000 SPD 6 out of 7 days, today for example I'm already at 10,064 and it's 6:15.
I take about 1,500 to 2,000 SPD at work and the rest on the threadmill.
One hour on the threadmill at 3.4 MPH will give you well guess what about 3.4 miles :) and about 8,000 steps.
Ever since I started WW on Jan 1st with points I've been walking on average 10,000 SPD 6 out of 7 days, I start work at 7am-3pm and it's the first thing I do when I get home, by 5pm I'm all done.
RESULTS - after only 6 weeks I've lost 22 pounds.
