Cold feet...

In a local news paper this week there was an article about a fitness group
coming up with the idea of cold feet = burning calories.

From tests they performed an average of 130 calories were burnt by just
sitting, reading a newspaper with a bag of frozen peas on each foot. It's
quite obvious as to why the calories are burnt, but can any one see any
possible negative affects freezing your feet for half an hour every couple
of days?

Thanks.

I should add to that 130 calories in half an hour! :of)

As someone who gets painfully cold feet in chilly weather while biking
and skiing, I would not recommend a method that could lead to damaging
tissue by freezing the skin.

I would suggest moving more to burn those calories.

As I sit here and stare at the screen in disbelief... you gotta be kidding
me !

That is the most stupid thing I've ever seen... sorry but it is.. if you
ever forget the freeze burns that you might get on your skin.. the foot
ache... and the general health effect (our feet are after all connected to
all the organs n stuff.. see about reflexology) and just think about how
unpleasant it would be to 1- sit there and freeze your feet.. and 2- when
they unfreeze it hurts (oh the evenings after skating on a pond all
afternoon.. oooooooch)

I've seen everything.. really.. that's it I've seen everything..

Guess it's a Canadian thing.. I ain't freezing if I don't have to !

On the other hand though, I have been instructed by my chiropractor to
take a bottle of frozen water and roll my foot on it for 10-15 minutes
when my arch is aching.  It does help relieve the pain and makes it so I
can walk again and helps clear up the calf muscle pains also.  He also
told me that a new pair of sneakers is in order when this happens, but
at least I can take care of the pain without mediction of any kind and I
do get severe foot cramps when my arch is aching.

That makes sense... cold will ease the pain.. and your rolling it.. not just
putting your foot on it.. so it's moving... doesn't freeze..

130 calories in 1/2 hour is probably about right. But we count in
kilo-calories not calories.
Another method is to drink all your water ice-cool, or even better
suck Ice cubes all day. You can calculate exactly how much energy it
takes to convert all the ice-cubes from 0 to body heat. It might even
become significant over a week.

A more environmentally sound/energy efficient method of losing weight
would be to turn the central heating down a notch or too, or not so
sound, turn up the air cooler a notch.

either that or eat a bit less:)

Actually, your body uses calories to cool down, too.  So maybe you'd be as
well off in hot weather turning the air cooler off or up a notch or two.

My best idea for how to lose weight without working at it through eating
fewer calories or getting mre exercise is to give blood.  I figure a pint of
blood must wiegh pretty close to a pound so if you want to lose a pound in a
flash head to your nearest blood donation center.

OK -- a lot of that pound is due to the fluid content of the blood so as
soon as you drink some water you've put on most of that loss.  But some of
the loss is real weight loss.  Your body is going to expens some calories
replacing those blood cells.

How else can you lose a bit of weight and maybe save a life all at once?

Organ donation?  Limb donation?   :oD

Not really. In fact it would make things worse - at leats in the
medium/long term!

If you cut off a leg for instance, thats a huge loss of LBM, and so a
huge lowering of metabolism. If you kept eating at the same rate you'd
not only put on weight but you have less body mass to attach it to.
The results would be increased weight, and increased body fat. Exactly
the wrong combination.

So yes in the short term you'd weigh less but in the long term it
would be counterproductive. And thats without taking into account any
lesseding of activity due to being legless*

I always sleep when I'm legless.
