Fred - 13 Apr 2005 20:48 GMT Well, you know I'm posting because I have some cockamamie excuse for not weighing in or the WI was free.
FREE
FREE AGAIN.
I am not sure how since I ate almost an entire tub of Triple Chocolate Meringues yesterday. Oh, well, maybe it was the wine I had commiserating with a friend whose kitchen sink blew out spewing hot water and then just cold water all over her kitchen and then down in the basement.
The news:
An EVEN 165. Still above goal of 164.
Down 0.4 since the last official WI which was in March.
Hey, TEX, any word from the southland?
Brenda G - 13 Apr 2005 21:38 GMT Thats great news . can't wait till i hit my goal ! Peace Brenda
Fred - 14 Apr 2005 00:59 GMT It is out there ahead of you. Just stick with the program (sometimes easier, sometimes harder).

I'm having a bad week this week. BAH! WI tomorrow, so I'll find out just how bad ;-)

Fred - 14 Apr 2005 01:00 GMT Just keep pedaling and you work if off. Just remember those compliments and the guy who did not quite recognize you.

Fred - 15 Apr 2005 01:52 GMT A loss is certainly not a total disaster. It is not any kind of disaster (G)

Today's substitute leader was the leader who let me off the hook (or scale) last week at another meeting. She probably thinks I seek out test scales!!!!

The thing that is probably good about them is that even if you do eat too many, it still is probably better than a piece of chocolate cake or cheese cake. Low-fat but tons of sugar.

Shrinking in size and shape, but not in scales.........and my weekend in Prague a couple of weekends ago has just caught up with me. This week my weight went up, but my % body fat went down........go figure. I'm feeling fit, feeling good, my clothes are fitting in a good way, so that gain.......well, with any luck it'll be gone next week. We'll see.......as ever.

I am trying to justify getting a full review of this but after a recent hard disk crash, spending the $$ for accurate body fat/basal metabolism is delayed till further notice. I'm beginning to think that the WW weight for me is also inaccurate due to muscle mass.
Kate Dicey - 15 Apr 2005 09:41 GMT >>>>hey - that's great! >>>>tho' I like the excuse stories better - they make me *grin* :) [quoted text clipped - 39 lines] > I'm beginning to think that the WW weight for me is also inaccurate > due to muscle mass. WW doesn't take build or muscle mass into account. It tends to say: you are male/female, x'y" tall, so you should weigh about XXXlbs... This works well for most people of reasonable activity levels, but not the manic sports person, the power weight lifters, or those in really hard physical jobs (like some workers I saw recently in a foundry, hand lifting and pouring 40lb tubs of moulten iron every few minutes all day long! None of those guys were fat, I can tell you!).

That does not make it wrong, it is just a way to deal with large numbers of people - AVERAGES. Frankly, most of the folks WW's deals with are not exercise manic types and so those charts work fairly well.
Sounds like you hung around that foundry for a while watching the sweat fly (G)

[quoted text clipped - 18 lines] >> >Down is good - and even chocolate meringues don't weigh much! Yes, it was nice while it lasted. I think that the meringues have shown up. That's the thing - eating sugar eventually allows it to bind with water and become real weight. Now, that is not necessarily real fat unless it gets out of hand. From what I have learned over the last few years, (the info on Atkins helped focus this due to its initial weightloss which was the quick reduction of glycogen stores), the body will store sugar with water as glycogen when it gets a chance. Of course, too much and it cannot just store glycogen but decides that EXTRA is okay and starts the conversion to fat storage for a long term defense against starvation. Natural mechanisms the body has created after a few thousands years of experience.

Some things never change ... you and those meringues being one ... the weight being second. I'm glad to see the second isn't changing. Way to go Fred!

Since that posting I think I have gone through 3 more tubs of those meringues. Damn computer is driving me to Fry's electronics which is the only place that has those triple chocolate ones.
On laptop now. Desktop fires up and then the system is resource demanding. Reboot and its fine but reboot again and it is sluggish as the system is again hogging resources. I don't thnk it is a virus at this point but something. Maybe too much heat. I would hate to have to reinstall everything but am getting to that point. There are not enough triple chocolate meringues left at this point. (g)

Darn electronics attract so much dust.
I have done the spyware/adware search. But am looking for suggestions for better detection software. I'm also thinking of dumping Nortons.

Fred - 26 Apr 2005 04:18 GMT Well, first I lost the F: drive (a 250gig job). Was able to recover a lot of it using a Linux boot cd. While XP choked anytime the disk was even in the computer, Linux read it and allowed us to copy files to a FAT32 drive (it cannot write to NTFS volumes. I gather MS wants to keep the innards of ntfs to itself)
But even since then, something is amiss.
Thanks for the spybot recommendation - I've got that one. Right now running Webroot SpySweeper.
I will never retire if I have to keep replacing computers (G)

I ended up having to fdisk my hard drive and reinstall everything just to get it off. It kept freezing things up and never the same thing in a row. Now that I have it off and all the security updates installed individually, it seems to be working fine. I also stopped using IE and outlook. I now use Firefox and Thunderbird by Mozilla. they both work great, faster and less viruses. And they are also free!. mozilla.org has them. Adele

I did reformat the drive and fdisk it. It is bad as I reinstalled it and the next day, same error - computer stops at xp bootup.
I use Firefox. I am beginning to suspect Norton is bogging things down.

512MB should be plenty to run Norton properly. Have you done all the spyware scans?

I would also go through the msconfig startup tab to see if there is a program in there that is no longer installed that is causing your bootup problem. Disable everything in there and keep rebooting and reenabling one entry at a time. You might also find a program or 2 that you don't use on a regular basis in there that can help free up some resources.

I use another program to ID what's starting up and will start removing items.
The other issue is all of THOSE OTHER THINGS that start that are NOT my particular programs. I've found a few sites to identify them, too.

Prairie Roots - 26 Apr 2005 01:50 GMT If you're a Windows user, you might consider trying Microsoft's AntiSpyware beta. Download it free at http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
Microsoft also has a page with links to 3rd-part antivirus software. From this page, Computer Associates has a special offer for Windows users: $19.95 for 2 years http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/downloads/default.mspx
I use Microsoft's AntiSpyware and Ad-Aware. For virus and firewall protection, I use Trend Micro PC-cillin, which has virus and firewall and spyware detection. I don't use the latter feature because the other two utilities do a good job. I've been impressed with Microsoft's app; it runs in real-time and I've also got it scheduled to run a scan every 24 hours.

SpySweeper by Webroot seems to be the best spyware detection and removal software out there right now Fred. And....you know what kind of business we are in....so we see lots of computers loaded with crap!
Also Norton 2005 is much better than the 2004 version if you are using 2004. It seems to be the most reliable for virus/worm detection and removal.

And....you know what kind of > business we are in....so we see lots of computers loaded with crap! I should have mentioned that since we see so many computers loaded with all this crap we normally install Adaware www.lavasoft.de , SpyBot, MS AntiSpy. Most of our customers, if religious about updating the software and scanning on a regular basis, don't have the spyware problem that they had prior to having these programs installed. If they do continue having a problem we usually suggest SpySweeper - most want to try the free versions before buying SpySweeper though.

TaskManager just was showing "SYSTEM" pegging out at about 98 to 99. Then I will reboot and it tames down and things run normally.
I can also see the modem/router lights and there is no suspicious activity occurring, at least, from a network/internet aspect.
I don't think keylogging is occurring either.

Are you running some older programs? You might just be dealing with an old program that is a memory leak. I know that some parts of office were notoriously bad in this department.

I don't remember it hogging resources, but then again it was long enough ago that I may just not have realized that was a problem. It ran extremely slow WHEN it finally booted up. On occassion I would have to start it up several times before it would even finish booting. I figured it was a fan/heat problem since it always booted fine in the mornings, after it had been off all night ... but if rebooting in the afternoons I would have to let it sit for a few hours to get it to work. The way I resolved the issue was to buy a new computer. <grin> At least I was able to catch things while I could still back up all the critical data (business info). My daughter is now going through a similar issue with her laptop - can't even get the virus protection to run all the way through. The computer seems to overheat while running it and just shuts down. I think I'm going to go buy one of those new ice-pack things for laptops and see if that will at least allow us to check for viruses. She will need it for college anyway.

I did not even put the clone in. And at the moment it is running but tight on space but attempting to dvd burn for the FIVE-HUNDRETH time my Haute Route trip. Burned it over night after about 3 mid-flight failures. And.... somehow mixed up part 2 and 3 so that the trip is mixed up!!!!! (g)

I tend to go in spurts, haven't been dipping into the chocolate stashes this week at all ... it just hasn't interested me. But thanks for the nudge, think I will work on getting mine backed up tomorrow. <grin>

Too much sugar was buzzing me too much. I have been better this week - maybe trying to get the computer working has kept me UN-bored although nearly nuts (G)

You know, older software that still functions and that I do not want to upgrade and which I paid for. But if I reinstalled, the patches and fixes for the older stuff is not available.
I recently realized that "upgrade in place" means you do not get copies of patches and fixes. So a year or two later you may be stuck having to re-buy software since your old stuff is no longer able to be "fixed"

I think I'm staying out of Fry's - although it is nice to know there is another place I can get those meringues when my grocer runs out. I bought two buckets yesterday, figure those ought to last me until July. <g> I am impressed that you were able to successfully not add those cookies to your shopping excursion though. That is a major step for you.

All my programs are currently available, but I still find it a pain in the behind to reinstall everything when changing computers. And somehow I always manage to forget something ... until I need it.
>I recently realized that "upgrade in place" means you do not get >copies of patches and fixes. So a year or two later you may be stuck >having to re-buy software since your old stuff is no longer able to be >"fixed" I don't think I've ever heard of "upgrade in place", will have to keep my eyes open for that in the future. I don't add much software anymore, kids don't touch my computer so I don't need all their silly little stuff. I could see it becoming a problem though. As I continue to age, I become more set in my ways. I like the programs I have now, don't want anything new and fancy. It only means I have to relearn things - and then I get into trouble. <g>
