Prairie Roots - 30 Apr 2005 17:04 GMT My current weight: 164.6 lbs Weight change since my last recorded weight: -2.4 lbs Passed my mini-goal of 165.
I think my body has figured out I'm serious again about weight loss and gotten with the program. 'Course it helps that my head and heart are serious again as well and are sticking to the program like glue. I didn't overeat or go off program once this week, though there were a few times I was tempted to dip into the admin asst's candy dish. (To get to the printer, I have to walk past her work space.) But I reminded myself that any pleasure I might derive from a few seconds eating a Kiss weren't worth the risk of setting off cravings. So far, using self-talk as a tactic for self-discipline has done the job. It's also helped saving my two daily fruits for daytime snacks instead of incorporating them into my meals. So when I have the urge for a sweet, I usually have a banana or an apple waiting for me at my desk. If I still want to eat something by the time I turn the corner to my work space, I know I can. I've also incorporated evening snacks like SF popsicles (2), dried fruit, and a spot of brandy into my daily meal plan. These are items that satisfy my need for sweets and sleep without setting off cravings. I'm one of those people who seems to have a list as long as my arm of foods I should avoid to minimize food cravings and the risk of uncontrolled eating. Not happy about that, but I'm trying to think of it in the same way a diabetic has to think about food.
This week the weather has been more late fall-like and so I didn't do any bicycling. Instead I went to the gym two times for BodyPump class and exercised at home to a new aerobics video, "Walking with George (Foreman)." It's similar in concept to Leslie Sansome's Walk Away the Pounds series. The video I have offers very easy to follow routines based on walking (no dancing!) with some large muscle routines, such as squats and lunges, thrown in. My metabolism is slow enough that I rarely perspire when exercising but this video manages to make me sweat! Even with all the squats and lunges I do in BodyPump, my muscles can tell the difference with this video. Later today, I'm getting back to the exercise ball I abandoned about a year ago when my kitchen construction project took over my living room. My abdominals need extra attention and the exercise ball feels so good while it's toning my core.
In other news, my daughter comes for a short visit later this week. I can't wait to see her! Still don't know if my other daughter and granddaughter will be coming too, but I'll be happy for some one-on-one time with my DD2. -- Linda P 232/164.6/145 mini-goal: 159.x

Fred - 30 Apr 2005 22:50 GMT Congrats on the serious loss due to serious program bondage and discipline (g)
I have managed to treat the candy dishes around work as OTHER peoples' property. They are not mine to indulge in. That really has worked now for almost 2 years. But it sound as if you have a strategy that works, too.
I do have either veggies for fruit generally for my work snacks. But occasionallly the trip to the market results in sugary candy. I guess that sugar is more my downfall then cheese and chips. I guess I just consider the fat-laden snacks offlimits in the main.
Too bad about the weeather but you have other interests which can fill in.
Enjoy time with your daughter. And keep on doing what works.

Prairie Roots - 01 May 2005 00:29 GMT Thanks Fred. Dipped a little too heavily into the licorice and dried mangoes today, but I think I'll recover. I need to grocery shop, but stayed indoors today to catch up on laundry and correspondence.
Looks like the high temps won't get back above 50 and morning temps in the 40s until later in the week. There won't be much bicycling for me soon.
If people kept their candy dishes in the far corner away from their cubicle door, I'd have no problem. But when it's sitting right next to the door and nothing else is next to it, it's a clear invitation, especially when the candy and dish belong to a diabetic!

Finally around 3pm went out on a bike ride. Lots of hill work. Till then I worked on my Haute Route slideshow while the computer was/is still running at speed but was doing this group and email on the laptop.

Funny, the bosses secretary has a dish, always filled, and she is diabetic. I know these are meant for anyone and none of them were offlimited until I joined WW. At that time, I just decided to treat them as if they were the personal property of the "deskee" and not treat them as a sugar buffet.

I've had plenty of weekends like that though the past few months. I think my soul is plenty rested. Friday night I went to a choral concert and last night I bluegrass concert. Today might be another "care of the soul" day. Straight from my weather software: Mostly cloudy today with scattered snow showers or a chance of rain showers. Highs 40 to 45. Northwest winds 10 to 20 mph. Chance of precipitation 50 percent.

Well, we headed to Eastern Washington to avoid the chance of rain. Nice day over there for a 9 mile hike with 3,200 feet of gain. Some snow on the trail but not significant. Mid to upper 60's predicted for the remaining week here.

Nathalie W - 01 May 2005 08:42 GMT Well done; Linda! You 're back in business! As for the candy dish : great job on resisting. We are so fortunate that this candy dish thing is quite unusual here! There might be some candy around when it 's someone's birthday, but that 's all. Enjoy your time with DD2,

There's an entire cable TV channel devoted to food. And at work, there's food on every desk. And then we wonder why the US populations has a problem with obesity. It's unAmerican to walk away from food, but unCool to be fat.

I 'm pretty sure Europe will follow soon though, we already have an increase of cooking programmes (and weightloss programmes on TV too!). I like reading recipes and watching those shows, sometimes it even satisfies my cravings to read about food, isn't that funny?

Many times it's enough to go to a store, walk around with a few Must Have items for a while, and then, when the urge passes, go home with nothing. Just giving myself permission--if I Really Want It, I can have it--calms the whiny kid tantrum. I don't if that's funny or pathetic. LOL

There are lots of tips and recipes on there and I like Calorie Commando, he takes a regular recipe and changes it to lower the fat and calories. There is also Low Carb and Lovin It, but that one does not really pay attention fats, just the net carbs in a recipe. I also like 30 minute meals, I am amazed at how Rachel Ray can cook up an entire meal in 30 minutes. She does a great job and sometimes they are not too fat laden. If nothing else it gives me ideas on how to change things up when I cook.

Great job resisting those kisses too!

Good job on the exercise. I mentioned to DS yesterday that we would dig his stroller out of the basement then go for a long through the subdivision and out onto the main road then back to our place, probably about an hour walk - he thought that was a good idea. Yesterday after lunch I went out to the yard and dug up a patch of grass (4' x 8'), pulled out the large rocks, added some more soil and manure, then moved the rhubarb plants. Then I went into my fenced off garden area, cleared another space (1.5' x 4) and added soil and manure then planted two gooseberry plants, then......I moved to the other side of the apple tree and cleared another space (6' x 10') and dumped manure on, but haven't added soil yet. It was difficult digging the grass and rocks out and I was at it until 8:00 last night with about 1/2 hour break for dinner....After all that DS reminded me that we hadn't gone for our walk! Oh my god...I was tired....I talked him into a bath instead!

Congrats on the wonderful week Linda. Isn't it nice to feel like you are back in control again? My daughter has turned me onto diet pepsi with lime (I can't handle the coke version) - has really gotten me past the sweet issues. A little bit and I find the cravings are totally gone. Hope you have a grand time with your daughter. I know those visits are few and far between, enjoy them when you get them.
