Yup, early one week, late another week - whatever works for the scale
monster....

Monday things looked good for a free month of May, as King Arthur
might say, the Merry Month of May....

Today the scale showed the same as yesterday and no telling what Weds
might show.  Today, traffic was terrible after a shooting near the
freeway so I thought.... hmmm.  Looked at traffic maps and when WW had
a nearby meeting.  Work was undemanding so I went for a WI.

Can one say "skin of teeth?"

FREE but only by 0.2 - not bad but certainly not good.  But since the
weight actually has been almost stable for about a week, I will take
it and run (hopefully, off my butt) for the rest of the month.

Hope all have luck and success this week.

(meanwhile sp2 is slowly attempting to update my "failing XP" system.

Whatever works! You got past the scale monster and ended up with
another free month under your belt.

Don't know anything about XP but it doesn't sound good. Does this mean
you'll be fading in and out?

Same weight again this morning.  Maybe I have finally recovered the
stamina to hold the switch in place - for the moment.

Quite possibly.  If my weight were as consistent as my XP problems, I
would have things under complete control.  Frightening is that MS
wants cars to be more automated.  I can see a CRASH being the real
thing and the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH being just death!!!!!!

Thanks.

The XP, service pack 2 installation took hours - it ran as slowly as
the computer has been functioning.  We shall see.....

have avoided it myself.  I'm hoping they get the quirks worked out of it soon.

Jumping in here...I avoided installing SP2 on our 3 XP machines. We finally
bit the bullet and installed it. The only noticable problem is that I have
lost the ability to "see" DH's PC on our network. Some firewall setting or
something is preventing connection. Otherwise we have not noticed any
problems.

Oh boy, the network issue might cause us some problems since the kids share my
printer.  And I often work from my laptop or family room computer, and grab files
from my main computer.  I think we have too many computers. <g>

I KNOW we have too many computers in this house.<g> The 3 of us have our own
computer. I have a spare/backup desktop in our bedroom so that makes 4 right
there. Then we just upgraded mine and DD's laptops so we have those 2 new
ones floating around the place. The spare upstairs is on 24x7 with the
monitor turned off. My printer is attached to that one so that DD and I can
print stuff. Its only DH's computer that is having the problem. I have not
researched it very much. He does not want me touching his machine so I have
to do my tweaking when he is at work. I don't know if he changed something
or the SP2 install did something. I can *see* his computer on the network
but it won't let me connect. Very strange.

Well, I am one computer shorter (brother finally removed his) and balanced that
with my daughters new college laptop arriving on our doorstep yesterday.
Lesseeeeee, there are 4 desktops hooked up to the network (me and the two kiddies,
and the spare) ... and we each have our own laptops, hub has a laptop he hasn't
learned how to turn on yet <g> and daughter has an additional laptop.  What's that
... 8 total???

We have to jump through hoops to see my sons computer on our network, because he
runs Win2000 and the rest of us use XP.  I know it isn't supposed to be a problem,
but it is.  Somedays he is there, somedays he mysteriously disappears.  I may have
to go play with it sometime, but I usually try to avoid stumbling through his
bedroom.  LOL

I did find that connecting with my win2K machine worked differently. You
need to have an ID and password set up on the win2K machine for things to
work. This can be the admin ID or a user ID but it does require a password
set to get things to work plus a folder on the machine needs to be set as
"Share". when the other machines try and access his machine the first time
you will get prompted for the ID and password. Once that is sucessfully
entered the connection should always be there.

I am hoping that sp2 will have fixed my slowdown issues which may be
virus or spyware related and that sp2 would overwrite some bad files
somewhere.  So far, fingers crossed, MAYBE.

I had avoided it, too but decided at this point, I would give it a
try.

I did look but not that hard for a REPAIR option on my original xp
disk but it only wanted to do a full install.  Maybe the web had
something but I got a disk from work to boot to sp2 and just ran the
damn thing.

MS is working on the next version so you migth just wait for that.

As for curing your problems, who knows. If you are truely having some issues
I would start over again by reformating the HD. I know that it is a pain and
very time consuming but sometimes worth the effort. If it was due to a virus
or spyware related reformating sometimes is your only option if it is nasty
bug. My daughter got infected with something and it took AdAware, Spybot,
Spysweeper and A-squared before it was completely clean of all of the
spyware. I came pretty close to reformating the hard drive if I hadn't been
persistant enough to try all 4 programs. I think it was Spysweeper that
finally detected it. It also took multiple scans with each program before it
was completely gone. I spent most of an afternoon working on it.

I think the "repair" option is to reinstall over the existing OS. It does
not reformat the hard drive but you do have to reinstall everything as the
registry is wiped clean. Your data files are safe but the programs are
hosed. Still a pain.

> MS is working on the next version so you migth just wait for that.

I think the new MS version is not due out for at least another year. I would
install SP2 because of the security holes it plugs.

I may give all of those options a try.  I've run 2 or 3 of them plus
norton but I hear that it may not be catching things.

Since I'm running along fine at this moment, I'll probably hold off.  I update
fixes for sp1 still, but that is as far as I go.

You really didn't have anything to lose by trying it though.  I'm hoping it
resolves all your issues.

Holding of SP2 is not a wise decision, because the next bunch of
security fixes will have SP2 as a prerequisite, in other words: they
force you to have SP2 installed otherwise they won't even install. I
suggest you download a couple of programs to eradicate the spyware from
your computer before installing SP2:

Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition 1.05 (freeware) :
http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html?part=69274&subj=dlpage&t
ag=button

Spysweeper 3.5 for home users (Trial): http://www.webroot.com/downloads/

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3 (freeware):
http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022-10122137.html?pa
rt=dl-spybot&subj=dl&tag=but

CWShredder 2.14 (freeware):
http://www.intermute.com/products/cwshredder.html

Spywareblaster 3.3 (freeware):
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/sbdownload.html

Windows AntiSpyware (Beta, but works very good):
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=321cd7a2-6a57-4
c57-a8bd-dbf62eda9671&displaylang=en

If you find the 270 MB download of SP2 too large you can also order a
CD with this Service Pack at Microsoft free of charge. It will take 4
to 6 weeks before delivery. More info on ordering this CD can be found

I'm surprised that this has not already happened. They did say that they
will stop allowing people to not skip the SP2 updates shortly. So if you
want any updates you *will* have to bite the bullet and install SP2 else you
can forget about any updates.

For Fred and other AT&T Worldnet customer: we have access to Spysweeper for
free. Just go to this page:

You can either do an online scan or download the product to install on your
harddrive.

For most of the recent updates SP2 is already needed as a prerequisite,
but SP2 will definitely needed in the near future for all XP-updates.

Thanks for the info Ekko.  There is no spyware on my system, I keep pretty good
track of all that ... and keep the kiddies off too.  Amazing I have by far fewer
computer problems since they are no longer allowed on my machine. <g>

I'm sure I'll get around to SP2 sooner or later, just not in too much of a hurry
right now.

I wish more people would do this. Or at least monitor what their kids
are doing on their PCs. I would save them from a lot of
computer-troubles.

Please do it sooner rather than later, because Microsoft sees SP2 more
and more as a prerequisite to provide you with updates. There are more
than 20 post-SP2 hotfixes already, most of them marked as critical by
Microsoft themselves.

Actually, it was just the installation running on the very SLOW
computer that was nuts.  Since everything ran slow, the SP2
installation took about 6 hours - not kidding.  At first, it appeared
to still be slow but it might have cured something. More tests are
needed.  I a boat that needs an anchor.....
