HA ! A month or so ago I bought myself a new car ! and today I'm making my
first payment !

ok.. sounds crazy to celebrate it.. but I've been living on my husband
salary for the last two years and this is my first step toward living on my
OWN money ! it's MY car and I'm paying it MYSELF !

Nobody's touching MY Matrix without my permission.. it's mine..
mineminemineminemine !!!!!!!!

I came this close to buying a stick shift one (Hubby don't drive stick
shift) but I thought it would be a pain if I go to SF (stick shift in San
Francisco, I don't think so) so I got automatic..

I wish DH would understand how important it is to me.. he keeps shaking his
head at me for being happy to pay for stuff.. pfffft ! MEN !

WTG! Establishing ones own credit history is important to a woman. I don't
think men will ever understand that concept. Its ok cuz we understand it.

My ex understood it when I left him and I had great credit and he had none.
That after being married for nearly 18 years, but he never paid the bills
and never had credit in just his name, unlike myself.  I made sure had I had
credit started as soon as I could.  In hindsight it was the best thing since
we ended up getting divorced.

Funny thing about those credit ratings ... I had a credit card in my own name
since I was a teen, hub would not let me cancel it for the reasons you stated.
Over time, I opened store charges etc., in my name but had no income as I was a
stay at home mom.  Never once gave my credit history a second thought.  We paid
our bills when they came in.  When I was out looking to buy a car last summer, for
grins the guy ran my credit report.  Asked my for my income, I told him zero.  He
shook his head, mumbled something about "this ought to be interesting".  Returned
shaking his head once again, said he has never seen a rating as high as mine.
Son's girlfriend works as a mortgage broker, ran hubs rating and it came back a
few points lower than mine.  Evidentally we have been doing something right all
this time.

I made my son get his own credit card 2 years ago, for that same reason ... he
needed to start building a credit history.  Car loan last year added to it, along
with one store credit card.  It really is important to start building that history
early.

I agree completely. Oldest daughter started hers on her 18th birthday when
she went to Best Buy and bought her laptop for college.  Then she applied
for a low balance ($300) VISA, she has since gotten a few store cards and
uses them and pays them off.  She also has her cell phone and then she
bought a car.  I still had to co-sign on that but it was still in her name
too, so she is on her way to having credit.

Son didn't need a cosigner for his car, but had I not cosigned his interest rate
would have been much higher.  He had a good credit rating, but not a long enough
or high enough history built yet.

That was the case with my daughter too.  Because I cosigned the interest was
under 5%, but would have been around 14% if she had did it on her own.

I think that was the interest rate quoted to my son too.  And our insurance
required that my name be put on the title, for him to stay on the policy and keep
his rates down (multi car discounts, etc.).  It gives me good leverage.  Have told
him if he misses a payment, I will sell the thing. LOL

I get it.

I remember when I bought my first new car. It came After my divorce.
Somehow I was able to do on my own what we were never able to do
together. How proud I was to make all the payments myself.

I wouldn't let my husband drive my car for about 6 months -- I still don't
like him to drive it.  He takes the subway to work and I drive -- it's just
easier.  I can understand your excitement, Willow.

That's very cool Willow. I'd love to have my own car one day, but for
now I'll settle for having convinced hubby to buy the car I wanted a
couple of months back ;-)

Congrats on the car Willow!  I remember those wonderful feelings of purchasing and
paying for my very first car ... all by myself.  25 years later, do you know that
car is still my all time favorite?  I think it will always hold a special place in
my heart. <g>

And I'll bet this shiny new car will always be special to you.  It is an
accomplishment to make those payments by yourself.  Stick to your guns and don't
let anyone else touch it. <g>
