A little courage and some advice, please

prairieroots - 17 May 2005 14:07 GMT On Saturday, I have an afternoon date. Need I say I'm all a-twitter? Nervous, excited, anxious, thrilled, terrified, hopeful, self-conscious, confident are only a few of the feelings that kept me awake last night. It's my first date with a man in two years, and my second date with a man in 12 years. It's probably only the fourth date in my life (my ex-H and didn't really date, we just "hung out"). LOL
Anyway, I'm very aware of every pound I weigh over my WW goal. And I really don't know what to wear on Saturday for two reasons. Here's where I could use some advice. How do you dress for a date at 1 p.m. Saturday for coffee at the cafe in an art museum where, after coffee, we'll be viewing an exhibit of the St. John's Bible? I'm a Lands' End /REI/LL Bean kind of person. I don't think it's possible for me to overdress for any occasion, but I don't want to be underdressed for this one. None of my clothes from last summer fit me...
So far, the weight's not melting off me this week like it did last week. Lesanne, if you're reading, now's your chance to catch up! Although with all the emotions going on, my stomach aches may result in several whooshes this week, if you know what I mean! -- Linda P
Laura - 17 May 2005 14:25 GMT I'm not very good in the 'what to wear" department. I think I belong on the "what not to wear show" but my suggestion would be a nice pair of slacks (taylored or at least twill) plus a top or sweater set. Not too fancy but not too casual. What's your weather these days? A nice pair of capris, sandals and a sweater come to mind if the weather is right.

The capris/sandals/sweater combo sounds nice. Thanks. I'm going to go window shopping during lunch today.

Shoes make a difference too. Tennis shoes and sport sandals say dressed down but with the same outfit flats or pretty sandals say more dressed up.

prairieroots - 18 May 2005 16:47 GMT Thanks Audrey. I went with a scarf instead of jewelry; that's more me. I've got jewelry at home, simple sterling chain necklace and sterling earposts with a clear crystal that will work nicely and not compete with the importance of the scarf. And I already had the perfect pair of shoes too. I'm good to go!
Joyce - 18 May 2005 21:50 GMT Don't know if you have any Target's by you ... but just the other day I bought a pair of capris (think they were Cherokee brand) in a Khaki color - not quite jeans but not overly dressy either. I paired it with a cardigan/shell sweater combo in a peach color. It looks "adult" to me (from the lady who wears nothing but denim and t's), still casual and comfortable for me, but more dressy than jeans. Not overly pricey either, since I don't intend on it fitting me for long. <g>

Enjoy yourself and relax, you'll have a great time. Let us know how it goes :-)

I'll try to remember your advice to relax so I can have fun. I'm really looking forward to the art exhibit. Several people from my work have gone to see it and I've been wanting to go too. So no matter how the date turns out, the day won't be a loss.
Miss Violette - 22 May 2005 15:08 GMT excepting for a true creep, getting to know someone better is always a good thing, Lee, who has her fingers crossed that this went well

None of my clothes from > last summer fit me... Dress tidy but comfortable. Lands' End tidy trousers, a nice shirt, maybe a scarf at the neck... Comfy shoes are a must! If you want a little dressier, something like the LE linen sleeveless linen top and matching skirt would look good. I'd probably go for black, with a bright jacket or cardigan if it's too cool for bare arms. I'm a LE Medium at present, and that would suit that sort of size or cuddlier quite well.

Have a nice date, whatever you wear.

prairieroots - 18 May 2005 16:43 GMT Thanks Kate for the outfit suggestions. I went to Coldwater Creek last night and selected an outfit that my girlfriends here at work have said is perfect for an afternoon date at the arts institute. Black stretch twill pants (full-length) with embroidered dots in bright colors such as apple green, hot pink, red, turquoise, grass green, peach, butter yellow; a black travel knit sleeveless top; an apple green big shirt; and a darker apple green, long, ladder knit shawl-type scarf. I already had shoes at home that I can wear: black, open-toed flats. I'll keep my jewelry very simple.
I can't imagine the situation for which I would bare my arms, regardless of the temperature. They've never been my best feature and as I age, they only get only waddly. I've tried capris, but my calves are just think enough and I'm just short enough that I've not had any luck finding a pair that doesn't make me look either like a clown or a 2 feet shorter than I am.
I'll feel comfortable and confident in the clothes I bought, which is the whole idea!

Excellent. And they sound very wearable for all sorts of occasions afterwards, which is also good.

Joyce - 19 May 2005 06:51 GMT Woohoo Linda, now there is some happy and exciting news! I'm not going to give any clothing advice, did that already then read further that you had already solved your attire concern. Just relax and have fun, enjoy the day and the company. That's what it's all about anyway, right?

Miss Violette - 22 May 2005 15:04 GMT I would dress as conservative, and if he is picking you up, lay out a couple of things, then if he is dressed so that you feel you need to change you can say, I will be right back, I want to finish dressing,... I sure do hope this went well, Lee
