Tayra - 02 Sep 2005 22:23 GMT DH got a call about 8am today: the FAA needs people to work their buildings around New Orleans, and since he works one of the FAA contracts here in Houston, the contracting company asked if he'd be willing to go over there and help out. So of course he said yes.
He had to drop out of college this morning. Came back home, packed up 90% of his clothes and a truckload of equipment and supplies, and took off. They said it'll be six weeks, maybe longer.
I've actually never lived on my own. I've got a friend or two who can take me to my weekly meetings, or I can grab a cab; I've got no car of my own. We're not sure yet how we'll manage his paychecks: I need the money to pay the bills, but they're made out to him, and I can't deposit them without his signature, which I can't get if he's in Louisiana.
So I dunno. I don't really have anything to say, I'm just pacing around trying to figure out what to do. I've never had to survive on my own before, without a car or a roommate or anything. At least I don't have a regular daily job to find a way to get to. Mostly I'm just nervous.
Thank god I can't eat when I'm upset, I guess.

Tayra - 02 Sep 2005 23:34 GMT > Erk! Don't they pay him directly into the account? This company doesn't do direct deposit. Never has, never plans to. It bugs the living daylights out of us, especially when the paychecks are late, but no argument will convince them; they just don't want to.
He's gonna ask em if they will, *please*, so I can have money, but given it'd be work on their part, I doubt they will. So, no telling what'll happen.
We'll find out within two weeks, anyway; that's when the next check's due.

Yeah, thought of that, called the bank. They said they might've been able to work it, if he'd come in in advance and signed some paperwork, but if he's already gone, there's nothing they can do. And he wouldn't've had time today anyway to go sit in a bank for an hour and fill out forms; found out at 8am, was heading out of town by 2pm. So they can't help me.
Just have to wait and see what the company can come up with, if they can put my name on them, or maybe one of the other employees who can sign a check over to me. Something, anyway, even if they mail him his check there, he signs it, then mails it to me here. Wait and see what they decide.

Does the account you're depositing into have his name on it? As long as the check is made out to him and is being deposited in his account, rather than cashed, there shouldn't be a problem. For years, before we had direct deposit, I signed my husband's name to the back of the check and put it into our joint account.

Tayra - 03 Sep 2005 04:56 GMT > Does the account you're depositing into have his name on it? Oh yeah, it's a joint account. If the check were made out to either of us, either of us could sign it, but if it's just him, then it's his signature they need. The girl actually asked the chief supervisor person to make sure. I could sign it all I like but they couldn't accept it that way.
She did tell me I could deposit it myself at any convenient ATM, as long as he'd signed it first, since it's a joint account :P

I have to say that it does seem odd that your husband is still being paid by cheque... My dad's salary was paid into his account directly nearly 50 years ago. Mine teaching salary was never paid any other way, and these days if I do sessional teaching for the local authority, it still is. Swapping over to that system would be a bit of work to set up, but once done, it would be very labour-saving and cost effective. The only time I get paid by cheque these days is for private work.

Deb in Northern California - 03 Sep 2005 16:43 GMT Kate,
Direct Deposit is not something that most companies want as the money comes out of their bank account right away with no "float"time. The employers are playing the float game with other peoples money. It is sad, but it is the mentality of a lot of smaller businesses. There is also a small fee involved in the process that is passed on to the employer. In today's age of electronic banking, that float time is very minimal if not even non existent, so there is no reason to not have it now, other than the cost that is involved that the bank charges.

Assuming he can find a working ATM in New Orleans, and assuming the post still goes through.

Deb in Northern California - 03 Sep 2005 16:46 GMT Tayra,
Trust me the bank does not check his signature against a signature card for endorsements. Just sign it and deposit it at the ATM and you should be good. I have done this for years at my bank. There is way too many deposits going through to check every one against a signature card.
I have deposited many checks without even endorsing them on the back and have never had a problem. As long as the name on the check matches the name on the account you should be fine. Just don't say anything and they will not know the difference.
ATM banking is the way to go, so as to avoid the face to face with this and also, the ATM clerk that is processing what is put in there will not bother to check either.

I did think of attempting to fake his signature. I've even tried it a couple times. I think I'd be ok with it if I got even remotely close, but there's no way I can manage to duplicate his .. very interesting writing style. I suppose if worse comes to worst I can just trace over something else he's signed, then ink it in. It's a common forging method. I'm just not sure how much legal trouble I'd be tempting if I did it.

You can deposit his checks into the bank account without his signature. You can write on the back "For Deposit Only to Account #XXXXXXX" I do banking for most of our employees at the office and not a one endorses their own check. As long as you have the account number and the name on that account matches the name on the check it can be deposited. Now if you want to withdraw funds when you deposit the check that would be an issue. As long as you are also on the account you should be able to deposit the checks and then make a separate withdrawal.
