Rough week :(

Hi All,

My closest friend lost the war against colon cancer last Saturday morning.
We've know each other since 1981 and we considered each other as family.
I've been with him through this entire ordeal and I'm really heart-broken
for his wife and 3 children.  He was only 54.  Cancer is truly an
unforgiving disease and can take down the strongest person with ease.

I've also been spending more hours awake each day, more than normal due to
my workload. This of course means that I haven't been sleeping enough either
:(

I find that when I am awake more hours of the day, I tend to get hungrier.
I don't reach for junk food, but I do tend to over eat more on portion
sizes.  It's strange, but it has happened to me before.

On top of that, the funeral hours for my friend didn't help either.  They
only had viewing from 5 to 9 on Tuesday and Wednesday and then the funeral,
mass and burial was on Thursday.  I felt the need to be there the entire
time, but because of the viewing times, it meant that I had to eat supper
early around 4:15pm instead of the usual 6:30pm.  When I returned home
around 9:30, I was hungry on both nights, so I ate something, knowing very
well that I was exceeding my daily points.  Then on Thursday, we had to be a
the funeral home by 8:00am because I was asked to be a pallbearer.  Mass was
at 10:00am, then the burial lasted until 1:00pm.  The wake was at a banquet
hall and we didn't eat anything until 1:30pm.  I didn't go crazy, but I had
a bit of everything.  They had pasta, chicken, sausage, roast potatoes,
vegetables and salad.  I stayed clear of the deserts, but nonetheless, after
lunch, I was out of points for the day :(.........and I still had to eat
supper!  All this, the day before my WI.......

It's really been a rollercoaster week for me.

Last Thursday, I weighed in early due to no meetings on Good Friday.  I had
a 3.6 lbs loss.  Unfortunately, I over ate my points on Thursday, Friday,
Saturday and Sunday due to being awake more hours than usual.  I also
overate my points on Tuesday and Wednesday due to early supper at 4:15pm,
hungry at 9:30 after funeral viewings.  Then on Thursday, again overate my
points due to early breakfast, late high point lunch.

After all of this, I gained 1.6 lbs at my WI on Friday morning.......not a
big surprise, except that I figured it might actually be higher.

Some positive NSV's for the week though were on Monday and Thursday.  When I
found out that my friend had died, I realized that I hadn't worn my suit
pants in a long time.  They were a 60 waist!......I tried them on and
realized that they couldn't even be taken in!  So I rushed out and purchased
a new pair.......SIZE 50 !!! I nearly died! I couldn't believe it!........I
haven't been in a 50 for over 7 years!!!

On Thursday, being a pallbearer was one of the hardest things I've ever
done.  When I started my weight loss journey back in Jun2005, I couldn't
even stand for 5 minutes.  If I went out any where, I had to ride on an ECV.

Losing 66.8 lbs to date made it possible for me to pay tribute to my best
friend.  I could not have even considered being a pallbearer had I not
started this weightloss journey!

This week isn't going much better, but I'm remaining positive.  If you've
read my other posting to Joyce, then you'll know what I mean when I say that
I've dropped anchor right now to catch my breath, but I'm never going back
to shore!

I'm really sorry to hear about the loss of your friend, and your very rough
week, Eddie.

I can't offer much about your friend (one of my closest friends who was 5
years younger than me died a little over a year ago, and that was actually
one impetus to me STARTING my diet), but I do hope you don't let things go
and continue on with how well you've been doing.

After all, you know it won't make anything better for you or anyone else if
you don't stick with your plan.

And you want to be there for your family in the long run, right?

Yours,

doug

Eddie, I'm so sorry for your loss.

My take is a little different than Doug's.  If you went over your points a
few days, that's the least of your worries and totally understandable.
You've had longer (and rougher) days than normal and as long as you still
made healthy choices, you'll do okay.  Persevere and you'll be back on track
in no time.

Take care of yourself, okay?

Eddie,

My condolences to your and your friend family of your loss.  Like you said,
you have "dropped anchor"  you know where you want to go, but you are taking
a rest along the way.  There is nothing wrong with that, life or in this
case death sometimes gets in the way and you have to realize that these are
the bumps in the road of life that we have to deal with and you are doing
fine along the way.

Congrats and the 10 inch lost in your midsection, that is great that you
were able to share in the last act with your friend as a pallbearer.  I am
sure he is proud of you too and will be watching over you as you continue on
your journey to a more healthy self.

and what a tribute to your friend, every pound you lose you can remember you
had lost enough to honor him...

it is wonderful you were able to purchase such smaller clothing, I am sure
your friend was proud of you.

as to the gain, life happens, and your attitude is both positive and
realistic... I think if it does get to bothering you remember what you would
have eaten/gained if this had happened before beginning to lose... and be
proud, you managed a very tough time with minimal damage and also keep it
separate, losing your friend is a sad thing, try not to comfort yourself
with food, perhaps, when you get sad and want to eat, write about your
friend, the good things, this may help the wanting to eat pass and after a
while you will have a collection of stories to give/share with his children,
even if the stories need to be later... best of luck, Lee

Lee, this is a great idea!.......I can honestly say that I've never really
been an emotional eater and I think this week was rough more so due to
Easter, more stressful working hours and disoriented eating times with less
planning involved.

Things are going much better now and I am really hoping to see a loss by
this Friday's WI.

Thanks so much for your comforting words Lee........they really mean a lot
to me.

I have only ever had a handful of real friends, I lost one a few years back,
exactly 24 hours before DH's father passed, I do not stress eat, I quit
eating which is as bad, I so sympathize with your loss and the stress
involved, hang in there, Lee

can, and don't quit if you have a couple of hard weeks.

Quitting is not an option for me Lesanne!.......YES, it's most likely going
to be a rough 2 weeks, but I'll get through it.  As Debbie said, "life
happens" and I realize that no matter what, I must learn to deal with things
as they arise and not let them affect my weight.

Thanks for you posting :)

Gee Eddie, that's a lot of hard stuff to go through, I'm so impressed by
your strenght, despite of everything going on, you kept aware, and tried to
make the best of a bad situation by keeping a grip on your eating.

Do you realize what a victory that is?

I'm truly sorry about your friends, those things never completely heal, but
keep in mind that time does smooth the pain. We learn to remember the good
times rather than dwell on the bad ones..

Take time to cry, take time to take care of yourself and your loved ones...
and take time to see what a strong and powerful person you remain even in
the mist of difficulties.

Sometimes a captain has to drop anchor to repair and reset the ship... when
he sets sails again though, no horizon is out of reach.

Take care of yourself !

Hi Willow,

Thanks for your kind words.  I've done a lot of crying.  I think I've run
out of tears.  I will remain strong and get through all of this.  We had
many, many good times together.
I think I'm ready to pull up my anchor today and set sail.......

Thanks for cheering me up.
