Just felt the need to post a little truth this morning. There are a lot of people out there who set themselves up as weight loss "experts" online, and otherwise. Some even have the nerve to write books, with no real personal experience.

I spent forty years of my life either overweight or obese. My highest weight was 365. I have always been interested in permanently resolving this issue. I sit here today, at a normal weight for my height. I have been at a normal weight for almost three years now after losing over 200 pounds.

When these little Arseholes who have never had a weight problem post bullshirt on the net it sometimes gripes me enough to have to answer.

Weight watchers has not always had a good program. Some of the MAJOR problems in the past that kept me from success are below:

 a.. Eliminating *"bad"* foods
b.. Lack of a flexibility in food choices
 c.. No real research base
 d.. Ignoring the emotional
Permanent weight loss for people who are very heavy is Not About Food at all. Today's weight watchers program is research based, and teaches people to live in the real world without trying to constrain them to an unrealistic and punitive set of food choices. It trains people to eat in the manner that normal thin people eat. Sensibly for the most part, with moderate portions of any and all foods that are interesting.

Current research has proven that the number one predictor of diet failure and weight regain is unrealistic expectations. Eliminating all *bad* foods is unrealistic. Quick and easy weight loss is impossible. Anyone who tries to live their lives in a world of abundance without tasting small amounts of things that they see others having is setting themselves up for failure.

Weight watchers now has:
a.. Research based interventions for dealing with emotional eating
b.. A plan that incorporates sensible portions and teaches about healthy food choices
 c.. A sensible activity program
d.. Tools to teach people what they need to know to lose the weight and maintain their losses.
People who criticize the program have invariably either NOT BEEN MEMBERS AT ALL and don't read research studies, such as George, people who were members years ago, or are people who thought all they had to do was show up and not do any of the suggestions or read any of the materials. People who fail to lose the weight, and maintain their losses are those who quit, or don't follow the suggestions. I know many successes from my years of experience. Weight watchers does work for EVERYONE who follows the program. To blame the organization for people who quit, or to arbitrarily post that is doesn't work from a totally clueless point of view is beyond ignorant.

Well said and thank you.

It's funny that when ever my Dr. asks me how I am doing with my weight,
that whenever I mention WW I get a thumbs-up.

It is the only thing that has ever worked for me.

Those who have half a brain will see the trolls for what they are... those who don't... well... sorry.. darwinism in action..

Don't waste your breath on this, take that wonderful energy and put it on treating yourself well.. :o)

Will, I like to tell my story once in a while, it sometimes helps people with a lot to lose. I think it is timely to tell it when there is particularly harmful spam in the group.

I never get tired of reading your story Lesanne, as a member it's an inspiration, as a leader it renews my faith in the program (sometimes, with everything I see, it IS tested believe me).

I just know that everytime a troll read it's name, everytime it gets a response, it's encouraged to continue... There's no "reasoning" with them, there's no "maybe he'll see the light"... there's just a "Ah! they are reading my posts!!" reaction from the trolls.. makes them happy... that's what they strive for. That's what keeps them here..

That's why I get so irked when I see people reacting to them, please keep posting your story, you should even post it more often I think... show everybody what a success you are, let them know they can be too. Just leave the trolls out of it and maybe, if everybody does the same, they'll leave the group and move to groups that gives them more satisfaction.

You see, this is right thinking. I am often out of line myself, smart women with strong opinions often are. Well I know how to apologize if I step on someone's toes, and I have a skin so thick that I really rather enjoy a good fire fight if it comes to it, and the issue is sufficiently compelling. I rarely get emotionally involved in any of it. NEVER with a troll :). I think they are pitiful actually. I always feel a little bad after pointing out their ignorance, as if I were sticking a sick mangy (and rather disgusting like a possum) animal with a pointed stick or something.... But angry? I save that for issues of import.

LOL - being one of strong opinions I couldn't agree more.  Ditto on the
anger.  It's a useless emotion on the Usenet.  Dead possums are sad, but
they're also a dime a dozen and not worth the emotional energy even for
pity.

I'm learning to apologize.. *blush* I got this pride thing that gets in the way sometimes.. but I'm TRYING !!!

Possums are cute !!! well healthy one are...

I can't take credit for him hanging around. No one said his name when he popped back up this year after an absence of months and months. He just has periods in his life (probably when he has just been fired from a job, or is in prison again) where he has lots of time to harass people. He will keep it up as long as he has nothing else to do, even when no one responds to him any longer. I have seen him do it over and over in the four or five years I have been on the newsgroup. He does like attention, but he often does not have time to read every thread (although the subject line on this one will probably lure him...). Even with no attention he will continue to crank out his bull, I just like to offer proof positive that he has no idea what he is talking about. I would not speak directly to someone who is not one of us, has no real personal experience, and just repetitively posts the same drivel periodically, but I do like to occasionally respond.

You don't need to ask me to not do it, because I frankly do whatever I want, even when someone I admire asks me not to :):):)> He won't leave the group until he is no longer bored. I won't leave either, and I will post when I have the extra time. Unlike our troll, I have a very busy life. He can be encouraged by my post if he wishes, I don't read most of his.

Willow I did not take it as blame, I took it as an opinion that you hold (the way I read it, your opinion is that if no one at all responds he will go away). It might be true. My opinion is that it *may* be true, or not, and that ultimately he will get busy elsewhere and go away again (based upon his past behavior) whether or not people respond to him.

It is also my opinion that trolls tend to elicit opinions. This is not all bad in my view. It is irritating when they are stimulated to the point of flooding the newsgroup, but they are easy to ignore if one doesn't wish to play with idiots, and distracting and fun to show up when one is in the mood to play with idiots. Sometimes it is fun to play with stupid and misinformed people. Trolls are a great resource for that. I am in the midst of a very challenging program of study right now. To debate with someone truly clueless, and put forth a little truth at the same time is relaxing fun, and a break from the debates with actual intelligent people in my courses.

It is not okay for people here to bash YOU for stating your opinion either. Those who tell you to quit being Momma, maybe should look to their own judgments about people. I am not a child. Your opinion in no way threatens me or anything else. I admire your commitment to WW. We don't share the same exact view of trolls but So Freaking What. The world is not the same color all over.

Bar be Cue? Hmmm. I had the most lovely lunch. Being the supposed "overweight junk food eater" that I am, it was suspiciously in line with the best and newest research into healthy food. I read research, what can I say? Must have something to do with my profession. Just call me an intellectual snob. A tall, normal weight, healthy, intellectual snob.

This is the recipe for my lovely lunch....
A nice stir fry with a little brown rice, broccoli, onion and tofu and a few spices.

A beautiful salad of spinach greens, home made citrus vinaigrette (low fat with just a touch of walnut oil) fresh ground black pepper, a half an ounce of toasted walnuts and a third of a cup of mandarin orange sections. YUM.  Some of that is major treat food. Some major treat food is very healthy.

If I only could just Make myself suffer some, maybe I could be obsessed with other people's business.......

Hi Willow,

I just have a question for a WW's leader.  My leader always has a in
groups, answering a couple of topic questions each week.  Is that how
you conduct your classes? (could you cc to my email
williamsonfire@earthlink.net.)

AW

Lesanne, I think you're correct.  Your story is worth telling many, many times.  There may be that one lurker who reads it and decides to join the program.  Thanks for posting.
Audrey, WW for life
Will, I like to tell my story once in a while, it sometimes helps people with a lot to lose. I think it is timely to tell it when there is particularly harmful spam in the group.

beyond ignorant and just plain sad, good post, Lee

Well said and a very good example of the truth about WW.

I got into WW because of the success of some people on ASD doing it and the
number of books I read about successful long term weight loss.  So many of
the success stories were members of WW.

Maintaining large weight losses is certainly not easy.  I've kept off over
100 lbs for nearly 3 years now.  Even though it's not what I used to get
here, WW works as a lifelong plan for me to keep from gaining the weight
back.

Just felt the need to post a little truth this morning. There are a lot of
people out there who set themselves up as weight loss "experts" online, and
otherwise. Some even have the nerve to write books, with no real personal
experience.

I spent forty years of my life either overweight or obese. My highest weight
was 365. I have always been interested in permanently resolving this issue.
I sit here today, at a normal weight for my height. I have been at a normal
weight for almost three years now after losing over 200 pounds.

When these little Arseholes who have never had a weight problem post
bullshirt on the net it sometimes gripes me enough to have to answer.

Weight watchers has not always had a good program. Some of the MAJOR
problems in the past that kept me from success are below:

 a.. Eliminating *"bad"* foods
b.. Lack of a flexibility in food choices
 c.. No real research base
 d.. Ignoring the emotional
Permanent weight loss for people who are very heavy is Not About Food at
all. Today's weight watchers program is research based, and teaches people
to live in the real world without trying to constrain them to an unrealistic
and punitive set of food choices. It trains people to eat in the manner that
normal thin people eat. Sensibly for the most part, with moderate portions
of any and all foods that are interesting.

Current research has proven that the number one predictor of diet failure
and weight regain is unrealistic expectations. Eliminating all *bad* foods

I believe that today's program is the best there is out there. Now if we could just get more WW members to follow it ;):)

Hear hear Lesanne. For me, the reason why WW works, is because it makes
sense. Counting points gave me a handle on how to approach food, and
taught me to know when to stop.
Thanks for a great mail,

Thanks for sharing, Lesanne.  As I said in another post on this group, I have
been a member of WW more times than I can remember, when my mother first took
me at the age of 12 when my 'problem' was much less of a 'problem' than it is
now.  Back then, I agree, WW was way more restricitve, and I think that is
one of ther reasons that I could not succeed.  I love the plan now, and I
have yet to see a physician tell you that it is not one of the best, if not
the best plan out there.  I feel that it now teaches you a lifestyle change,
rather than restrict you from the foods you want and crave from time to time.
I can eat out with my family (which we do a lot, the way our life is right
now) and find something to eat anywhere I go, it just takes maybe a little
more planning.
I am not currently a member of WW, I am considering joining online tho, and I
am trying to 'do it on my own' at the moment, I have lost about 5 lbs in the
past 2 weeks.  I just need to be more disciplined about me food choices, and
also to include exercise.  Very hard to fit it in, but I know that is a big
key for me.  I keep thinking, "this weight will take FOREVER to get off"  but
I  have been saying that for years, I just need to shut up, quit
procrastinating, and make this change.  Your story gives me hope.  Thanks
again for sharing it.

Donna, I recommend joining long enough to go through their entire box of "tools for living" and do everything they suggest. You might be surprised at what you come out with.

You are still overweight, but congratulations on the improvement so far.

The reason I don't read much research on the subject of weight loss is that the research itself can too quickly become one's focus, rather than taking direct control of the problem and eliminating it in obvious ways.  Witness all the postings here about about counting points, weigh-ins, plan failures etc.

Just eliminate the junk food, and nature will get you where you want to be.  No membership costs, no lifelong point-counting, no drama.

The same way winners stop smoking.
