Hello group-

I am working with a fitness company (gym) and we are developing
programs to appeal to people who are looking to get fitter or lose
weight or both.  We especially would like to find out from women and
people who are in their 40s and 50s what they want from a gym.

It would be very helpful to get some responses from you to help us. I
apologize for intruding but we would like to collect responses from a
variety of people. And hopefully this will allow us to develop programs

that are appealing to you.  Thank you in advance for any responses.

1. Do you belong to a gym?

2. If you do, what is your typical regimen?  How often do you go, when,

how long, alone or with a partner, etc?

3. If you do not:
-- Do you think you should?  (If yes, what keeps you from going?)
-- Do you do something else instead of going to the gym (alternative
workouts, etc.)?

4. How does a gym fit/not fit into your life?

5. Have you discussed joining a gym with someone (friend, spouse,
doctor) and what did you talk about?

6. What would the ideal gym look like and feel like to you?

7. If you needed to select an ideal workout partner, who would that be?

8. What is the most believable claim a gym could make to you?

9. Has any gym advertising caught your attention?  What did it say to
you?

10, If a gym company were to speak to you about "wellness", what
would that include?

11. Anything you would want to tell the gym management?

Thanks for any input you can provide.

 Hello group-

 Hidey..

I am working with a fitness company (gym) and we are developing
programs to appeal to people who are looking to get fitter or lose
weight or both.  We especially would like to find out from women and
people who are in their 40s and 50s what they want from a gym.

 Hmm. Woman, 57.

It would be very helpful to get some responses from you to help us. I
apologize for intruding but we would like to collect responses from a
variety of people. And hopefully this will allow us to develop programs
that are appealing to you.  Thank you in advance for any responses.

Okay since you asked nice :).

 1. Do you belong to a gym?

 Nope

 2. If you do, what is your typical regimen?  How often do you go, when,
how long, alone or with a partner, etc?
 N.A.

 3. If you do not:
-- Do you think you should? No, but I would like to. (If yes, what keeps you from going?) The gym's around here are not open early enough.
-- Do you do something else instead of going to the gym (alternative
 workouts, etc.)?
I work out at home, inside, outside, whatever...

 4. How does a gym fit/not fit into your life?
None around here open early enough for me. I like morning workouts.

 5. Have you discussed joining a gym with someone (friend, spouse,
doctor) and what did you talk about?
 No.
 6. What would the ideal gym look like and feel like to you?

Open early, and if there is a crowd enough equipment that it does not matter. A person to ask questions of who makes sense, is educated in physiology and fitness, and is open minded.

 7. If you needed to select an ideal workout partner, who would that be?
Someone less fit than I, but barely and on my heels.....

 8. What is the most believable claim a gym could make to you?
I tend to be a rather skeptical person. A claim would not interest me, performance would interest me....

 9. Has any gym advertising caught your attention?  What did it say to
 you?No and Nothing.

10, If a gym company were to speak to you about "wellness", what
would that include? I am a professional nurse. My conception of wellness has to do with balance. Physical health, mental health and a meaninful life.
 11. Anything you would want to tell the gym management?
 nope.

Thanks for any input you can provide.

OK...  I'll be honest!  I'm 49, so I qualify on age grounds.

Never!  Nevernevernever!  Ugh...

> 3. If you do not:

I've been advised against, on medical grounds, thank God!

>  -- Do you do something else instead of going to the gym (alternative

I walk.

I swim.

> 4. How does a gym fit/not fit into your life?

It doesn't.

> 5. Have you discussed joining a gym with someone (friend, spouse,
> doctor) and what did you talk about?

Doc:  I have fibromyalgia, and have been advised against any high impact
stuff.  So no weight lifting, no running or jogging, no squash/games,
nowt that puts anything extra on any joint.  Bit of a bugger, really...

Treadmill?  Why?  I live in the country and walking is free.

> 6. What would the ideal gym look like and feel like to you?

Full of water!  With only me to swim in it...  And a wave machine!

> 7. If you needed to select an ideal workout partner, who would that be?

Another swimmer.  I have one - we go as often as we can.  We aim for
twice a week, more when the weather's good and we can go in the outdoor
pool!  :)

> 8. What is the most believable claim a gym could make to you?

That they wouldn't charge me if they didn't have something I could do.

> 9. Has any gym advertising caught your attention?  What did it say to

Lots of pretty pix, no water...  It made me sad.

> 10, If a gym company were to speak to you about "wellness", what

A well!

> 11. Anything you would want to tell the gym management?

Build a nice BIG pool!  And have ladies only swimming sessions at
sensible times.

Blokes tend to power up and down and swamp us smaller, less powerful
folk, bang into us because they don't look where they are going, and
then look all offended if you screech OUCH! at them when they do it.
They can have blokes only times too, at times less convenient to me...  ;)

See, you are a swift and lithe young thing.  I am a slower, less
powerful mermaid of an older and rheumaticky nature and will never power
past the young blokes.

I love our Friday Night Ladies only session at my local pool.

Kate, you're one of a kind ! LOL

I see your point.. If they get too annoying, swim straight in the middle of
the lane.. they'll have to stop for you.. revenge... hehehe

Ah, yes - the revenge of the Blue Rinse Brigade!  ;)

In one of the pools I use regularly there is a nice social group of
older women - in their 60's to 80's.  The float gently up and down the
pool, occupying vast areas, exercising their tongues far more than their
swimming muscles.  We have christened them The Portuguese Grannies of
War.  They are definitely a Hazard to Shipping...  If I'm still swimming
when I'm 87, I shall join them with pride!  :)
