the Wendie plan is interesting. I have some info on exercise as well.
If any of you read my initial post last Tuesday, you'll know that I
used to be an exercise freak before my neck surgery (fom an accident).
It was a struggle to get back to a healthy place where I can do limited
exercise. No more weights, though. I have to admit that most of my
life was spent as a very fit person, but now i know what it's like to
carry a lot of weight. Oye. I went from a size 4 to a size 12.
So what does this have to do with Wendie? Well, it relates to how we
exercise to be most efficient. Did you know that our body at it's
basic is meant to turn up the metabolism in spurts? At our primal
level we were intended to run to catch prey and then stop to prepare
the meal, so to speak. So our metabolic pattern in these situations
are low (at rest), then high (running).
In order to be really efficient, we need to mimic those metabolic
patterns. So, when someone exercises at their "heart rate level" the
whole time while they're on an elliptical, or a treadmill, or whatever,
they're not taking advantage of their exercise routine. A "perfect" 20
minute exercise would consist of a
* warmup for 5 minutes
* 3 minutes stepped up to your heart rate level
* 1 minute at your highest heart rate level
* 3 minutes heart rate level
* 1 minute ABOVE your heart rate level (anaerobic)
* 3 minutes heart rate level
* 2 minute at your highest heart rate level
* 2 minutes heart rate level
* cool down
I belive this to be the most efficient way to exercise. Try it for a
variation and you'll see how fast your workout goes. One tip is that
it's much easier to do when you're not reading or watching TV.
Of course, with all pieces of advice, you can take it or leave it.
Just thought I'd throw it out there.

It's good advice. An article in my fitness magazine last year compared the
results of a number of workouts with regards to weight loss and found that
interval training produces excellent results.

Interesting...I do about 4 3/4 miles on a treadmill 5 times a week...I use
a workout called the rookies which increases elevation and does alter
speed...I was recently told that I was working out to much for to long on
one piece of equiptment...I knew that altering the speed and elevation was
important but now wonder if I might be wasting time...I'm not very fast and
it does take about an hour and twenty minutes to complete...It seems there
are so many opinions that it is hard to know who to believe...Thanks so much
for your input...GG

YES Laura - I agree with you totally!
I've been reading about speeding up my metabolism and interval training is
definitely the thing to do.
When dieting our bodies naturally lower our metabolism so eating per the
Wendie Plan and interval training should theoretically yield favorable
results.

It really depends on what you are trying to do.
If you have plenty of time and like running, then running for a long
time is a great way to expend calories.
If you don't have much time and prefer springing then interval
training is probably better.
Weight training is great for burning calories but it won't get you
aerobically fit.
Maybe this is why peoiple suggest mixing it up in the gym rather than
using one piece of equipment for ages.
In the final analysis for weightloss the only thing that really counts
is calories,

hi :)
Still here, still reading, but I've been distracted by all sorts of
things - the proverbial chinese "interesting times".
Not doing well weight-wise. I'm back up to around 210 but stable
there. One factor is that I can't use my gym for a while, and also
because I am travelling quite a bit.
Haven't given up and when I have time I'll post progress.

Hey, we all hit those times sometimes just happy to know you're still
around!
I got a new motivation all over again.. when I started it was because I was
getting close to getting a heart attack.. cholesterol family history n
stuff.. got myself taken care of....
Now it's my husband's turn... so it's back to basics.. litterally..
