Patty - 21 Jul 2006 01:26 GMT I went to my first meeting today. I liked it. It was mostly educational. I think I could learn a lot there. The leader seemed enthusiastic and tried to get the members involved in discussion, but the members were kind of quiet.
I bought a 10-meeting package and the starter kit with the food guide and the dining out guide. I spent a little more money than I had planned...Oh well.
I think I'll start with the flex plan. I need to learn portion control. Badly. It will also be a change to keep track of what I eat, but I need to be more aware of how much I'm eating. I like that there's no huge list of forbidden foods.
I was a little overwhelmed at the meeting, and I thought that after the meeting I'd feel depressed. But I didn't. Instead I felt almost hopeful.
Anyway, thanks for letting me share.

Stormstruck - 21 Jul 2006 01:35 GMT Good on ya Patty.
It IS a little overwhelming at first, it took me a few weeks before I truly got into the swing of things, but I had decent losses from week one.
This board is a mine of information and the WW website is also.
Good luck and well done on taking that first step!

Eddie-Type2 - 21 Jul 2006 12:15 GMT way to go Patty!
Buy yourself a good digital scale and it will become your best friend. Trust me, you want to do this! One thing to remember - don't try to change your food habits drastically! Take your time and try to fit in foods that you currently enjoy, but make sure that you count the points for them. Also try to meet the 8 healthy guide lines, especially drinking your milk portions, drinking lots and lots of water to help flush your system, take a good multivitamin and just "try" to eat healthier overall...........you will see the pounds come off very quickly.
Keep us up to date on your progress!

Thanks. I'm going to try to keep it to at least 1 to 1 1/2 lbs a week. Slower and I may get too discouraged.

Don't be surprised if you go through a week or two where you stay the same. That's normal - it's called a plateau and there are ways to "jump start" your loss again, but plauteaus do happen, even when you are sticking to plan. :)

Oh yes, I know about plateaus. What do you do to jump-start it from a plateau? The only way I was ever able to jump-start weight loss again was to go off the diet for a few weeks then restart with continual exercise, sometimes walking twice a day but never could keep up such a pace at my age. I'd lose a few lbs then hit another plateau and have to start all over again which would always discourage me. I'd give up for awhile because the losses never continued, yet the plateaus would go on for weeks and weeks. I never gained much weight back during those periods of discouragement off the plan, but never was able to get below 160 lbs either. I already know if I add more points I will start to slowly gain like the last few times. If I eat less points I'll be told I'm in starvation mode so I feel between a rock and a hard place. Why? Because I seem to see the same cycle happening again. I've not cheated in the past week, walked 14 miles and only lost 1 lb.
:o( How do you people do it who can't walk for some reason? Do you just keep removing points until you do lose each week?

The thing that has worked for me in the past was to trick my body by eating various points values over the course of a couple of weeks - by (mostly) adding protein. For example, on days 1, 3 , 6 and 7 I would eat 3-6 extra points of strictly protein or strictly skim milk. On days 9, 10, 12 and 14, eat 3-6 extra points of protein or milk. That way your body isn't sure what it is going to get for the day, so the metabolism speeds up a little bit to compensate - and it kicks you off the plateau phase.

Thanks. This is something I can try. I'll have some extra salmon tonight for starters.

Stormmee - 25 Jul 2006 21:13 GMT what you need to understand is that this is not about a number on a scale for me, I am 46 almost 47 years old, spent most of my life fretting about weight, starving on this diet or that, WW points/core for me is the way I eat now, there is no temporary diet for me, I have for all intent been in about a 2 year stall, but I am healthier, moving more, and in less pain, and most importantly NOT hungry, if you readjust your thinking to the health mode you will get healthier and eventually lose, but if you obsess on the number you will get discouraged, Lee

I take thyroid meds once a day. That's it. I have always been very active and on a healthy diet. I never had a weight problem until menopause when my hormones went totally wacky and my thyroid quit altogether. Those problems are past and now I have these last 30 odd pounds to deal with that are hanging on for dear life. :o(

Stormmee - 24 Jul 2006 09:55 GMT congratulations, and you do know if a meeting is overwhelming, if there is another one you can go to you can attend at no charge, you don't weigh, just show them your book where you paid and ask to sit in, Lee
