I have been OP for 12 weeks and am down 16lbs, even. I *know* that's
good rate of loss, and I feel better, but I'm still feeling a bit
depressed and overwhelmed because I have far to do. What do you do to
help yourself stay motivated?

Don't look at the big picture...Look at small goals...Give yourself mini
goals...Realize that rather than your pants getting tighter they begin to
get looser...Don't obsess on goal...It will come if you
persist...Really!...GG

Gary is right, also think of this as a healthier lifestyle with weight loss
as a by-product not the main point, Lee

What Gary said. Also give yourself non food rewards for achieving mini
goals, a movie or opportunity to relax and do something new and fun.
Change your meals a bit too to add variety. Make yourself a chart to
track your progress and see that downward loss.

and measuring yourself regularly might also help as inches lost can be a
great motivator, Lee

once I figured out how much more I would have weighed had I not started
losing, I was gaining about a pound a month or so and that really put it in
perspective, also it is good to consider how many years it took you to get
to your highest weight, that might help you to consider how long it is
reasonable to take to lose it, just hang in there, Lee

Chop it into little bits! I had 70 lbs to lose - a third of my body
weight. I aimed for every half stone as a separate goal.

When all else fails, I go shopping ;o)
Seriously, I've been at goal for a while, but had 70 lbs to lose, and I
remember feeling discouraged, like oh yeah, I lost 25 lbs, but I have more
than twice that much to lose still!!! I remember thinking that it would be
75 lbs to lose if I hadn't lost that 25lbs! so there!
My motivation has always been to make this a game, you know, how can I make
this more fun? How can I find a way to be a little more active without
killing myself in the process. How can I eat right on, without having
vegetable soup all the time.
There's no magic to it, but you've done good, weight wise, how else have you
done good? What are you doing that works? Activity? Food? New way of acting?
New way of thinking? it's not all about the pounds.. .

Thanks for this, I always focus on the weight loss and not the
lifestyle change.

You're doing great, -L! I understand how you feel. I've got about 85 lbs
(39 kg) left to go. But my first 10% goal is in about 7 lbs (3.2 kg),
though. That's a fun thought! As far as staying motivated goes...going to
meetings helps, posting and reading here helps, trying new recipes helps,
small non-food rewards can help. I started keeping a small calendar for my
weight loss. For every day I eat according to the good health guidelines
and do my exercises I get a dollar. In September I earned $14. With this
money I intend to buy fun, frivolous, and totally unnecessary things. :-)
I think with my $14 I'm going to download some music from iTunes. (I don't
link my rewards to weight loss because I want this to be a lifestyle
change.) Good luck to you!

Thanks guys, for the input. I do have short-term goals, but I sort of
*feel* like my progression is slow (in actuality, it's normal - well
within the 0.5-2.0 lbs/week range). I think I am battling change of
seasons, which always throws my metabolism off. I was down 2.0 this
week (shocked!) so I am feeling a *wee* bit better. I think my biggest
problem is that this weight loss is much more slow than other times I
have lost weight (in my 20's - I am now 43!) so it's just hard for me
to get used to the idea that it will be more of a struggle.
Anyway, thanks for the support!

good loss, think of this as a brisk walk not a sprint, and also remind
yourself this is the LAST time you are doing this because you are doing it
correctly so its fine if it takes longer, Lee
