I think your news server is dropping messages Kate?
I had the same problem, so I switch to freenews.netfront.net.
I can't post from there, but I use it for reading messages because my
regular news server was not getting all of the posts for a long time.

There have been several posts each day .............:(

I unsubscribed and then resubscribed to all my news groups... I hope
this has sorted the glict! It's been iffy fpr a couple pf weeks. :(
