I can only do maths when it involves fabric.

I was good at maths, didn't like them, but was good at them...

here's the simple problem that really set me off...

This guy is building a patio. It's a round patio... 30 feet diameter, 4
inches thick.

He can only buy whole cubic yards of concrete. How many cubic yard of
concrete will he need?

1- I haven't played with geometry for over 15 years...

2- I was raised on the metric system, I'm not sure (well I know now!!) how
many inches in a foot, and I have no clue how many feet in a yard..

3- I misread the question (cause english is like my 3rd language) and didn't
understand that it was whole cubic yard at first.

I figured it out finaly.. but it took a long time... and talking to my mom
didn't help cause she's using the metric system too.. so had to make a
bridge between my maths challenged husband, and my english system challenged
mom who's a math teacher.....

December 7th... I'm soooooooooooo getting drunk!

That was the answer I got, too.  Are you taking a math class, or were you
really building a patio?

I took that!  If you are good in math, it really is not that difficult.  I
have friends who had a hard time with it, but they always struggled in math
in school.  I think the question you posted would have been one of the more
difficult on the test.  Just remember not to get hung up on any one
question.  They are not written in order of easiest to most difficult, so go
through and answer the ones you know, then go back for the rest.  When do
you take the test?

Is this for the CBEST?  You'll be fine.  I just had algebra and geometry
in high school and passed on my first attempt. I have two college
degrees but did not have to take any more math after high school.  The
students I tutor are so upset when I tell them I can't help them with
their math homework. Usually there is someone else in the class who can
help them. I can help them  with science, English, social science and
even foreign languages.

I'm terrified.. it's not so much the maths themselves, but the english
language and system..

Your English is fine.  MUCH better than that of many of my former
students who were born and brought up in England!  I speak as a former
English teacher, teaching up to university entrance level.

Just remember that all proper nouns have capital letters (except ee
cummings, who never used punctuation at all!), and to close parentheses,
and you'll do fine!  And the grocer's apostrophe is to be avoided at all
costs.

Are you in a study group?  Or are you studying on your own?  A lot of people
I know used the Cliff notes for CBEST.  They give some very good tips in it.
(I just used the study guide that come with my registration confirmation).

What particular part of English language and usage is bothering you most?
The test is not at a terribly advanced level, you know.
Willow Herself - 24 Nov 2006 14:58 GMT
It's mainly when it comes to written maths problems and such. It's a timed
test, and I have to take the time to read and re-read because I misread a
lot.

I'm studying on my own and haven't talked to anybody really.. I'm probably
freaking myself out for nothing..

You probably are.  The day I took the test I was pretty freaked out, too.
Mostly because all I had used to study was the guide they gave us, and when
I got to the test site, I saw all sorts of people frantically going through
their Cliff notes study guides.  It hadn't occurred to me until then that
any real studying might be required.  I though it was a test of basic
knowledge.  But I ended up passing with flying colors--because it reall is a
test of basic knowledge.  And it isn't as if you have to score in the 90th
percentile to pass.  But it is good tyo be a little nervous--keeps you on
your game.  My biggest piece of advice it to make certain you have plenty of
sharpened pencils.  When I took the test, about 1/4 of the people brought
pencils that were not yet sharpened, and the university where we tested had
no sharpeners.  So they all stood in line to use the little, hand-held
sharpeners brought by 4 or 5 people.  <chuckle>

What grade level are you planning to teach?

you do fine with your English, frankly better than some who are supposed to
have it as the first tongue, Lee

I hope you are over it soon, Lee, who has a sister that is just as sick as
she just finished an accounting course,
