Well, Core was a bust. Back to basics now - trying calories again.

Today is day 899. As some of you who follow my postings over the last
couple of years now, I lost a lot of weight (45 kg) by mirroring what
is basically a Weight Watchers flex points plan, but counting calories
instead of points and doing it myself (since there is no WW here in
Japan).

But since the beginning of the year, weight has been creeping back,
and over the last few months my will-power for sticking with the plan
has been very erratic - good days and bad days.

Recently I've tried experiments with Core, but I'm sad to report they
have not worked out well. After a couple of weeks on Core, even though
my weight went down a bit originally, it started to creep up again and
I went from 92.8 kg when I started a couple of weeks ago to 93.8 kg
this morning. I think the problem is basically that there are a lot of
relatively high-calorie foods on Core and I just naturally gravitate
towards them. A couple of small examples: When I have to journal
everything I tend to eat the lowest calorie vegies, like broccoli and
carrots and green beans and mushrooms. But on Core, I take advantage
of the fact that even the highest calorie, starchy vegetables allowed
and go more for corn and pea mixes, pumpkin and things like that.
Similarly, when counting calories I almost never eat beef or pork and
tend to have white mean chicken and fish for my protein. But on Core I
eat more lean beef and pork, which is higher calorie. As a result, on
Core I just eat more calories.

<sigh>

So this morning I'm making a resolve to just go back to the plan that
I was on for the first couple of years - 1700 calories per day with
1000 free calories for the week - with exercise calories to help
provide extra little bonuses.

What I need to figure out is this basic, fundamental point: Why was I
able to do this so well for over two years without even thinking of
going off the plan, yet lately it seems all I do is go off the plan?
What has changed?

But there is nothing I can do but try try again. That is the advice I
consistently gave to other people when they were having trouble. So I
will follow my own advice.

What else can I do?

Obviously I have to journal everything I eat - and stick within the
calorie limits - somehow.

so your core experiment was a success, you tried it, found it wasn't for you
and are changing strategies again without self beating/abuse... that doesn't
sound quite right but you know what I mean... now as to the other part...
some ideas as to why resolve might falter-

-boredom with foods eaten over a long period of time.
-too much routine in food so slower losing.
-you were basically at goal so you didn't have the reward of more large
losses.
-and the scary one witch you need to examine but might not want to share
here... self sabotage because of "insert your reasons here"

glad you are following your own advice, I am probably going to stay on core
through the holidays to at eat better foods then go back to flex after the
first of the year... I am definitely not losing but I think if I went back
to flex right now I would have a total melt down, Lee

I might go back and forth between flex/calories and core depending on
circumstances. For example, I am going on yet another U.S. trip
between November 28th and December 25th. While traveling around it
might be easier to do Core foods rather than try to figure out points/
calories while dining out all the time.

I'll see.

Anyway, I've been good today on calories.

It does seem like the "holidays" are just here though, doesn't it!

that is why I am staying on core until after the holidays, also it limits my
eating more and more junk when so much of what I like is served during this
time of year.  Lee

One thing I was never clear about on Core - how do you handle in-
between-meal snacks? Is any Core food acceptable as a snack? For
example, if I was hungry mid-afternoon could I whip up a mushroom
omelette (cooked fat-free, of course) or make a tuna salad from salad
vegies, tuna packed in water and fat free mayo?

that is how I do it but if I am wrong hopefully willow will tell us, Lee

Don't consider your experience with core a bust. This is a learning
experience. I have never mastered the "eat until satisfied" part of Core so
I don't follow it per the WW plan. I do flex but incorporate as many of the
core guidelines into my menus. I do best when staying away from the
pre-packaged, processed foods that I was relying on when I first started
with WW. Core has helped me keep the junk out of my menus. When I am hungry
or having a "snack attack" I reach for a piece of fruit or some baby
carrots. I used to stress over using up all of my points at the end of the
day on "empty calories". I don't do that any more. These are some of the
things that I learned while trying Core. Hopefully, you can incorporate some
of the core ideas into your calorie counting routine.

One thing to keep in mind, our weight loss journey is not only learning
experience but it is intended to be a perm way of eating. That's one of the
biggest things that I took away from following core.
