Hi everyone
Ihave been overweight most of my adult life, I used to be able to
control weight reasonably well by staing physically active. I became
wheelcahir dependant about 9 yrs ago after losing one leg and severly
damaging the other. More recntly I have been diagnosed wth Multple
sclerosis and now find that instead of being able to use a manual
chair, I have to use an electric wheelchair the vast majority of the
time. My weight has reached approx 160kg ( approx 350 pounds), I am
determined to lose weight but need the support of others who understand
the challenges involved. The I have tried weight watchers meetings but
since I cannot weigh in ( cannot stand on the scales), I don't seem to
fit in.
I guess the other issue is that charts show my deal weight to be 64 to
67kg, meaing that I need to lose more than half my weight- it seems so
daunting, even when I try to break it down into mini goals ( its hard
to forget the the total I need to lose). My current mini goal is to
cease gaining weight and get below 150kg

I am determined that I will lose weight, my independance is at stake if
I don't ( not to mention- my life), I never eat in public- it is
amazing how people stare when they see a large person eating- even if
the meal is a healthy low fat meal- or is this my imagination!

Last time I saw a dietician she told me I was not eating enough, but I
was too scared to follow her advice- it is hard to see how eating more
could be better for someone gaining weight! I am keeping a
journal/diary and recored all my food intake and weigh and measure
every thing
any tips form people who have started in the super overweight class (
or anyone else) would be greatly appreciated

Welcome, Karen!

I don't face the physical challenges you do, but I have successfully
lost half my body weight and kept it off for over 2 years now, so I
can at least serve as one example that it's possible.  You are right
to take it a step at a time, though.  I never set out expecting or
even hoping to lose this much -- just figured that losing anything
would be good.

Can you give us an idea of what you're eating?  How many calories,
what sorts of things, and when during the day?  Maybe a sample day or
two?  Maybe we'd have some thoughts on whether you are in fact eating
enough.  When I started losing weight, I weighed 262 lbs. (120 kg) and
I aimed for 1600 calories/day -- and I was quite physically active.
Some people would think that was too little at my body weight, but at
my age (58 now) and with my rather slow metabolism (thyroid disease,
treated but still a factor), it seemed to work well and didn't leave
me over hungry.

Another thought -- can you do any kind of exercise in water?

Again, welcome -- and tell us more about yourself!

Chris

HI
Thanks for the welcome and the encouraging words
I aim for between 1000 and 1200 calories (  try to be closer to the
1000- thats why keeping a food journal is important). The MS has caused
some swallowing difficulties, making certain food textures diffcult to
manage- red meat is impossible, small amounts of lean chicken or turkey
mince is ok but I by the leanest cut I can find and mince it myself. I
have type 2 Diabetes, so I try to stick to foods that have a low to
moderate GI. Using this approach I have been able to get my blood
glucose levels down to normal. I am careful with carbohydrates as I
find that even modest amounts of complex carbohydrates seem to trigger
carbohydrate cravings. I Cannot eat bread (again due to swallowing
problems) although flat bread ( unleven breads) I can mange in small
amounts with caution- it is safer to stick to crsip breads.
Typically breakfast would be poridge oats and some tinned fruit
Lunch would be vegetable soup, Crispbread
Dinner would be mince chicken, cooked with shredded vegetable such as
cabbage, carrots zucchi, capsicum, mushroom and 1/2 cup cooked basmati
rice seasoned with chilli powder and light soysauce
A snack ( either in the afternoon or evening) would be no fat yoguhrt
and fruit

I use an electric wheelchair about 80% of the time, the rest of the
time ( mainly at home I use the manual wheelchair. I Used to love water
based exercse but I need a pool that has a hoist to get out- most of
these are hydrotherapy pools that are heated to quite a warm
temperature. Unfortunately one of the frustrations with MS is that
exposure to heat makes your symptoms worse for several hours- the main
one is severe fatigue- Its not something you can force yourself to work
through- When I get out of a heated pool, I barely have the energy to
sit up and get dress- I usually sleep for several hours afterwards- so
the benefit is lost.
I have found a Workout DVD on the internet that is aimed at the super
overweight - it said that there are 3 levels and the 1st is for seated
exercise- i have sent away for it. Other than that I use food cans from
the pantry as weights and also have some "therabands" to do resistnace
excerse, but this is mainly strength stuff rather than aerobic stuff.

Asde from all this
I am an RN, I work in "telehealth" these days giving nursing advice
over the phone ( very part time) and I am studying Information
Technology at university (got exams soon). I am single and lve alone
with my cavalier spaniel (Penny). I live in Adelaide Sth Australia and
have a brother who lives in Canberra. We are very different, I am
severly obese, unift and have health issues, not wealthy but make ends
meet. he is 46, has been retired fr 5 years, Is remarkebly fit and
healthy with no health issues and is independently wealthy- he spends 6
hours per day at the gym!!
thats me

Yes.  Let's hear what you are currently normally eating in a day.  And
exercise?  Do you have an electric wheel chair or do you move by your own
steam?  Do you have any dumbells?

Hello there!!

Just popping in to mention that Weight Watchers travelers don't have
wheelchairs scales, but the centers are supposed to. If the center in your
area doesn't, you can request it, they can order one through materialogic!

The travelers (usually in churches or schools) don't keep wheelchair scales
because they generally don't have the space to store it away between
meetings.

Though I'm a big fan of the WW program (I teach it) there are other ways to
lose weight, bottom line is eat less than you burn. Since you're limited on
the movements you can make, it's all in the food choices. Stick around this
group is a good place to get information and ideas.

Hi
I live in South Australia, I have not heard the term Travlers in
relation to weight watchers before but all of the meetings here are in
church halls, school halls, etc and when I contacted them they were not
able to evn suggest somewhere I could get weighed. It has been
suggested that I focus on measurements instead - my concern with that s
that at my weight you need to alter quite substantally in weight to be
able to see much of a differences in measurements - that goes for
increasing and decreasing weight. I don't want to get paranoid about
the number on the scales, but I would like to be able to weigh once per
fortnight at least to ensure that at the very least, that I am not
getting heavier. If I can get down to under 150kg  can just about mange
to weigh on some scales at home- not very accurate as I need to use
handrails to stand up with - but it is a help.
Nice to know that your centres are able to get access to equipment
easily if they need to- is that due to anti discrimination legislation?
There was a court case here not long ago when it was decided that equal
oppurtunities legslation did not cover obesity- t was not deemed to be
a disability!!

I should have asked where you are first.. sorry..

I'm in the US, I don't know if it's law.. probably... but the centers are
required to have them here..

I was going to suggest to get WI monthly at your doctor office, but if it's
not considered a disability, it might not be covered by inssurance.. humm..
I really don't know how to help you other than "keep asking until you find
what you need"

G-luck

http://www.healthdiscovery.net/forums/index.php? is a great message
board if you still feel comfortable with weight watchers.  I find the
boards easy to manipulate and lots of support, once you find your
niche.

I'm so sorry about your loss.  Life sometimes really throws us some
horrible curves.

Do you get DISH TV?  I don't remember what station is was, but the
exercises were all done from a wheel chair. Called Sit and Be Fit.
Below are some video's you might like:

I counted fourteen.  Just type in chair and you can view them all.

I like your positive attitude and wish you the best.
