I want to lose about five pounds. This month marks the beginning of my
11 th year on ASD and I have a question.

I've read eliminating a lot of decisions makes it easier to not think
about food. Others maintain variety fights diet boredom. What do you
think?

For the next few days I am having a tangerine and soft boiled egg, plus
coffee for breakfast and a large salad with some protein and fruit and
one tablespoon of a full fat dressing for lunch. Dinners will vary and
have meat, fish or poultry, different vegetables, fruits and gelain
made from diluted fruit juice as well as low fat homemade yogurt for
snacks. I'll eliminate dried fruits, honey and nuts which are usually a
part of my restricted but not low carb diet.

For ME variety is the key. That doesn't mean it's true for everyone.

I have 5 or 6 breakfast that I juggle around, that way I'm not eating the
same thing every morning. Every once in a while, I'll try a new breakfast,
and if it's really good (and quick) I'll add it to my list. Like my super
eggwhite pie... mmmmm

Same goes for everything.. I try to try (wow I'm trying a lot!) to
incorporate 2 new foods, or new recipes every week minimum. I have time to
look it up (FINALLY) and love to cook and experiment. I've got two huge
advantages though, 1- my husband is game to try pretty much anything and 2-
I don't have kids.

For many people, eating the same foods is "safe", and that's fine, as long
as it works. When it gets boring, or doesn't taste that great anymore, then
it's time for a little experimentation. I don't see how anyone could try a
new recipe with every meal.... that's a full time job!!!

I've come to see food as, an outlet for my creativity, not an emotional
band-aid. I play with food a lot more than I eat... it works for me..

conteibuting to a recipe list and am too food involved so for a time I
need a plaster cast, not just a Band Aid. LOL

Usually, I exercise more variety than anyone I know.

To lose a mere five pounds, or fit into one size smaller, that word
'exercise' might be the answer. A bit more, a change of the usual, a
different plan might work off the extra bit to just plainly step it up
a bit. Your foods appear to be spot on, so seek to use more calories by
exercising more (or better or different).

I exercise regularly and the weight does not budge. But three weeks ago
I got one of those lower back things that renders you helpless and it
has just gone away. I need to resume the regime gradually. I have
exercised for six years, lifted weights, climbed stairs and aside from
being more fit and flexible, not a dent in losing weight. ( I also walk
every day.)

My personal experience is that it is possible, even easy, to eat enough
to avoid losing weight no matter how much exercise one does.  That
includes Basic Training or week long canoe trips.

I probably follow a combination of variety vs same foods.  Breakfast is
oatmeal, protein powder and flax seed approximately 95% of the time.  It's
easy to fix and the ingredients are easily stored in my office at work.
Lunch is probably where I have the most variety as I sometimes carry it to
work, eat out of eat in the cafeteria at work.  We do a lot of eating out in
the evenings but I tend to choose the same items from the menu - salmon or
another type of fish, vegetables and a salad.
