Howdy all!
I have been offline lately -- recovering from surgery and so on. I hope
that all of you are doing well and had a great holiday weekend! I'm
back to my regurlarly scheduled program and I have a quick question for
you. The first Trader Joe's in the area is opening today and I plan to
swing by and check it out. Could you please remind me what your
favorite TJs items are so that I can check them out? Thanks!

I buy these items weekly, but there's lots other stuff that is good!
Fage USA greek yogurt
Sasquatch bread (sprouted grain)
extra sharp cheddar slices
unsweetened 100% cranberry juice
Organic tomato soup/butternut squash soup in cartons
Yemen Mocha fair trades coffee

I'll definitely second the Greek yogurt. We buy the fat-free kind,
and it's great. I also buy whole wheat hamburger buns there all the
time. Other than that our purchases vary, but one thing we buy often
is their frozen fish, which is very high quality. We particularly
like the salmon and the red snapper. Oh -- we also like their chicken
sausage, which comes in a bunch of varieties. And frozen oriental
dumplings (e.g., shu mai, gyoza). And frozen edamame.
You'll like it :-).

I'll be the third one to recommend the Greek yogurt. I also buy the
fat-free and add crushed pineapple to it.

Thanks! I've been getting the Total Zero yogurt from Whole Foods. I'm
hoping that TJs has it for a better price ;-)

Nope, the Greek yogurt was the same price at TJs.

Yeah, almost $2 per cup. However, TJ's makes their own brand of greek
yogurt, and you can get a 16oz tub for the same price as Fage USA's 7 oz
tub. It doesn't taste as well, imo.
The way I see it - I do not eat out much, I don't do fast food, don't buy
latte's at starbucks daily like I used to. Good healthy food is my splurge.
I can eat healthy AND enjoy it, and overall, my daily cost of food is lower
than it used to be when I was going out for lunch on a regular basis.

I agree, when I started this "healthy journey" my husband was worrying that
groceries were costing a lot of money... after 3 months we had saved over
600$ in eating out, "starbucks" (Well Peets actually), munchies, etc.
We paid a heck of a lot more in groceries, paid a gym membership and still
saved over 600$ in 3 months!
And that's not counting the smoking money cause I stopped smoking too!

OK, I didn't see the store brand but the place was really a zoo.
Personally, I justify the Greek yogurt's price by saying to myself "but
it's a PROTEIN." :-)

I also get the fat-free fage yogurt. I use it in place of sour cream.
I like the Trader Darwin chocolate whey protein powder.
We usually get some chicken sausages - I chop them up and stir fry them
with veggies (brussels sprouts are a favorite) and toss them with bowtie
noodles.
I really like the sushi platters.
Lately we've been buying the frozen seafood mix. I toss it with lemon
and a bit of butter and put it on angel-hair pasta.
We like the frozen edamame. I accidently got it unshelled once and that
wasn't much fun. It's like a hipper version of lima beans. My whole
family likes them.
I like some of the Thai frozen bowls. They're not particularly healthy,
but they're good, portion controlled, and ready in a jiffy.
There are some boil-in-a-bag indian foods that come in a slender box
that are ALL good. One is a spinach and cheese mix that looks horrid
but everyone really likes. They have ready-made brown rice, too: I like
this for when I'm camping, but the boil-in-a-bag indian foods make a
good side dish, too.
My husband thinks the Tomato Basil pasta sauce is the best one he's ever
tried. I tried to like their pesto sauce but it just wasn't my
favorite, which is too bad because it's really cheap.
Another thing I like to do there is get stuff to make up a big batch of
trail mix. They have ready-made packets, but I like pineapple in mine
and blueberries and stuff like that, so I get packages of dried fruits
and nuts and customize my own in a big container. This is NOT a good
weight loss strategy, though, because I immediately eat the entire
thing. Coconut and chocolate is like crack cocaine to me and that's in
my favorite trailmix blend.
I'll second (or third) the frozen seafood recommendation, but be careful
what you get. Orange roughy is a really nice, high quality fish that's
expensive. But they also sell something else as a sort of "roughy" that
is NOT orange roughy and is NOT as good.
The last thing I'd warn you about is orchids. I'm turning out to have a
problem with orchids. I never suspected I was an orchid-addict, but the
Trader Joe's near us has such lovely ones for such cheap prices. My
kitchen windowsill is overflowing with (non-blooming) orchids now. Heed
my warning, they're insidious.
Enjoy!

I usually buy:
- 2lb. tub of low-fat (or non-fat) cottage cheese. This lasts me about
a week.
- 1lb. tub of low-fat organic cottage cheese. A little more expensive,
but oh-so luxurious!
- pre-washed packaged greens
- organic baby carrots
- low-fat string cheese
- 1lb. bag almonds
- Weetabix cereal (cheaper than at Whole Foods)
- Kashi Go-Lean
- ground flax seed (Bob's Red Mill)
- frozen wild boreal blueberries
- multigrain savory thins
Have fun!

Sometimes TJ has items that are only there once. Learn what
they stock regularly and if you've never seen an item there before,
figure it might be your only chance to buy some.
TJ red wine of the week - sometimes mediocre, sometimes fab.
When you run out of table wine buy one and see. If good go back
and get several more before they switch to next week's one.
No nitrates bacon, low carb dream stuff.
Some type of cheese I don't ever remember having before, more
variety.
Bags of nuts. Racks of supplements. Nice smelling fancy soaps.
