I drink a lot of tea and need to sweeten with sugar.

I am looking to eliminate sugar from my diet but am not interested in an
artificial sweetener.  Anyone else found a fully safe sweetener to use.

Far as I know they are all safe. Splenda tastes the best. All the
others have an aftertaste. Sweet n Low (saccharin) is the worst. I read
a survey on the web about these and the concensus is tastewise Splenda
is best. It is also the most expensive at about 3 cents per packet.

If you wanted to approach the topic strictly from a which is healthiest
standpoint, you might consider how long they have been around.
Saccharin has been around a long time, next came Aspartame (Equal,
Nutrasweet) and the newest is Sucralose (Splenda). Often if there is a
problem with anything, it shows up after a while so in that regard
sacharine has the edge...but certainly not in taste. Seriously, I don't
think there is a quantifyable risk associated with any of it. I eat a
lot of Splenda and Nutrasweet too.

If you cook, Equal does not hold up to heat as well. It's fine in tea,
etc. but cooking or baking for a long time causes it to lose its
sweetness. The other 2 hold up well to heat.

One more factor. Splenda has less than 1 cal per packet. The other two
have 4 cal per packet. dkw

Something not artificial is Stevia (now in packets also).

And something synthetized many like is sucralose (Splenda).

Drink a better quality tea, that doesn't need sweetening.  People sweeten
tea in order to hide something in the tea.  Could be a bitter flavour or
a tannic flavour.

Get a tea that doesn't have that flavour so you don't _have_ to hide it.

Perhaps, but I just like sweet tea too. There is always a little
bitterness to tea due to the tannic acid or whatever the ingredient is
that makes it a little bitter. I do drink coffee black, but tea I need
sweetner. I would try drinking it without sweetner though. Could you
recommend the best teas? dkw

There is a tea called "Sport Tea" that has nice natural sweetness. Also,
some Tazo teas like the "Passion" flavor don't need sweetener." They don't
reach the level of "sweet tea" as in the southern concoction, but they
aren't bitter at all.

I've been drinking loose tea for a while now and it is tough to say what is
the best tea.  It would be like saying what is the best color, everyone has
their own preference.  The best way to find the tea you like is to try
sample teas from the various families, eg black teas, greet teas, etc and
then try different brands.

My personal preference are the Assam teas.

Ditto the Tazo brands are excellant. If you google 'teas naturally
sweet' you get a range of responses.

Note that white teas, which are young picked leaves are naturally
sweeter.
Flavored and scented teas, such as with cloves and or orange citrus are
lighter and 'sweeter' to the taste.
Browse here to learn more about teas:

Stash teas are my favorite: http://www.stashtea.com/index.shtml
And I like some Celestial Seasonings flavors too:
http://www.celestialseasonings.com/index.html

I am surprised no one mentioned honey as a 'natural' sweetner option. I
buy an organic honey that is stronger in flavor and sweetness than the
regular pasturized watered down version you find in the typical grocery
jam aisle. Its about 60 calories per tablespoon, but you really only
need to use about 1/8 of that to sweeten a cup of tea and proabably way
better for you than any artificial sweetner.

I might mention too that everything is what you get used to. If you cut
back on sugar in teas you will find that you will need less and less
until you dont require that 'sweetness' in order to drink them. Its
like when you cut back on salt and then have something you usually ate
months before and its acck! soooo salty. Similar with sugar. Here's a
primer on why sugar makes us fat, where its hidden in foods, and the
differences btwn artificial sweetners:

Thanks, I'll try them. I have been drinking green tea by Lipton, the
one with Mandarin oranges. It is great, but I do add 2 Splenda packets
to it. dkw

I'm not a big fan of artificial sweeteners because, safety aspects
aside, I think that they corrupt my palate.  That is, after drinking
a diet coke I seem to want to eat more sweet/salty/greasy/junky food.
This is certainly not an original observation.

Here's a suggestion: how about a tea with sweet flavor notes but without
the punch-in-the-pancreas heft of "sweetening"?  Currant flavored tea,
offered by many dealers, is one.  Another favorite of mine and many
friends is tea with Lychee extract.  This is available in big red-gold
square tins at many Chinese groceries for between $5.00 and $8.00
per pound.

Good luck,

Rick.

One of the things that has really helped me lose weight is to get over
my sweet tooth. I never thought it would make a huge difference, but it
does. I don't care about candy or pastries anymore.

And I hardly drink diet sodas anymore; I prefer Pelligrino and sweet
ice tea; bleh.

So, you might try weaning yourself off the sweet drinks.

Many natives use cat semen

Harvesting would be a problem, I would think.  My cat won't even stand still
to have eardrops put in.
