It was an experience that I really enjoyed and hope to do again in May with
the "Run for Habitat". I was a little nervous, having never done this before
and being a bit shy around new people. Most looked at me a smirked a little
like, "hey look at the fat guy", but I didn't care. One of the people who
attended my speaking engagement for the hospital stopped me before the run
and we chatted a little bit. I poised myself at the back-middle of the pack
from advice I had gotten from others who have done it (avoid the stampede in
the front, slow pace of the people in the back).
I was passed many times and spent most of the run by myself, which was a
little lonely. I played the passing game with a 10 year old girl, I passed
her and a short time later she passed me, we did this a few times. I finally
won out when we hit a steep incline, she decided to walk it and I kept
jogging along.
I never stopped, knowing that if I did I would not continue. My time was
39:12, which was faster that what I had originally thought (13min mile).
If you were to tell me 3 years ago that I would be participating in 5k runs,
I'd think you were nuts...
Another milestone achieved...

Way to go, Matty!! It's really a great experience, isn't it? Our season of
5Ks begins next month, and I am really looking forward to it.

I get those looks from the Gym Bunnies in my new fitness center. F***
them. I can do TEN MILES on the recumbent bike now--six months ago, I could
barely tie my shoes. And I'm at tleast DOUBLE the age of most of them.
You rock, Matty, and you're an inspiration. WWMD??? (What Would Matty
Do?) :-D

Way to go Matty, I know how you feel. Last Saturday I ran in my third
5K of the year (and my life) and I felt great. I went from 430 to my
weight of 204 this morning. Keep up the great work.
