Ugh. June's challenge is the 100 meter dash. We had our first team
practice Friday night--it felt pretty good, learned some techniques, ran
with some teens and they didn't totally whip my a.s...

But Saturday I could hardly move without my body shrieking at me to
stop! And my right shoulder was throbbing--from making "blade hands" I
guess.

I never realized how different sprinting was from regular
running/jogging. I guess I thought it was the same style, just FASTER!
Nope--they are two very different animals!

I went to yoga this morning to help stretch my super-tight hams and
quads, and I'm still nursing my shoulder--but it's back to practice
tonight. Kids, get mommy's wheelchair!

Do you do yoga on a regular basis, Amy?  Loosening those muscles will
help with the sprinting.  Also, I assume your practice is having you
warm up with slower runs first, gradually working up to the "as fast
as you can" sprints.  I used to do sprints with Tom and found that
good warmup really helped prevent soreness.

Yoga is a new thing for me, though I've been to many a pilates class,
which borrows some moves from yoga. It was a nice workout with just
enough of a challenge. I'll go back on Thursday.

We did a lap around the track and ten full minutes of stretching before
the sprint practice. We did two rounds of 30 meters, 40 meters, and 50
meters before hitting 100--but yeah, it was a lot of running.

Our long distance lady, who is gearing up for her first marathon, was
complaining about how sore her quads were before we left practice, so I
guess I should have known what I was in for...

This sounds like it would be fine, though what Tom had me do was a bit
different.  I did some stretching and then 1/4 mile or so moderate
run, and then did a number of 100-meter runs, but at increasing speeds
-- first at my normal distance speed and then gradually working up to
the "as fast as I can" speed.  I'm sure your coaches know what they're
doing, though.  (You're right that sprinting is a very different way
of running!)

Yep, sprinting is a whole different thing. I run 3.8 mile 3-4 times per
week. One time decided to run sprints on a grass field. I ran 40 yard
sprints for about 30 minutes with rest in between. No problems I felt
good and ran fast. Next day my legs were killing me. Talking to a
physical therapist found out that the sprinting uses more of the fast
twitch muscles and distance running uses more slow twitch muscle. So
there you have it. Can't explain the shoulder though.
