Ode to Mountain Dew

em - 09 Aug 2007 01:40 GMT Today's my first day in, oh, twenty years that I haven't had any mountain dew. (I drink, I mean drank, the diet stuff.) Quite a few people have "mentioned" that I drink a lot of the stuff. In my son's words, "Dad, Mountain Dew is going to be your downfall."
A couple weeks ago I bought 25 bottles on sale & they were gone in 9 or 10 days. I knew I was drinking 2-3 bottles a day, 2 liter bottles, but seeing the pantry fill up and then empty out just kind of hit me.
For now, I've been drinking other diet soda w. caffeine + water. I plan to go to something like a couple cups of tea in the morning, eventually. Right now, stopping drinking that one drink is a big enough step for me.
A gallon and a half a day!

I am now trying to cut back by switching off with iced tea.
I suppose I should try cutting back on caffiene, but the boost really gets me through the afternoon.

Occasionally I make some effort to cut back, but I usually backslide. In the scheme of things it's not one of my big worries, but maybe someday :-).

Stimulants effect "hyperactive" people differently.

Stimulants effect "hyperactive" people differently. It's only a "disorder" if your life doesn't work well. Therefore for me it isn't a disorder. So call it a trait then. I have ADHT. Not nearly as recognizable but it is the same thing.
Coffee? I do use it to relax me so I can sleep easily. When I get woke up by the on-call pager the last thing I want to do is have a cup of coffee and doze off. Been there, done that, learned my lesson.

I've always considered it a blessing. I get along fine "the way I am".

My quitting of mountain dew was a failure. All I did was drink the same amounts of other kinds of sodas I didn't like. I did see that I have it in me to really cut down on caffeine by drinking no-caf sodas, but f-it. I'm fat. I smoke. I drink too much soda. All things given, those are the biggest problems I have health-wise, in order by my personal priorities.

Nope. Being in the majority, they're just the fuzzy masses. I found a job where borderline ADD is an advantage not a disadvantage - that focus ability works great in IT.

This ADD thing, or these characteristics I have or whatever, and more than anything else the hyper-focus, has allowed me to accomplish some really cool stuff over the years. Wonder if I could hit such a state while walking on a treadmill.

But are *they* called "Focus Deficit Disorder" [quoted text clipped - 6 lines] > stuff over the years. Wonder if I could hit such a state while walking on a > treadmill. The other description I've read comes out of science - The photoelectric effect. Bombard a reaction with unlimited read photons and nothing happens. Bombard it with a few blue photons and it ignites. Throw as many unfocused fuzzy people at a problem and if it is hard enough they will just spin their wheels. Point one hyper-focus ADD person at it and the problem can be solved.
Some very hard problems I've tackled over the years have been like that. Not many, but they were the ones that others had concluded were just plain impossible. There is strength in diversity and this is our strength.
But do be cautioned. As a kid I heard "Earth to Doug" often enough. Get that kind of hyper-focus on a problem while walking the treadmill (I'm currently at 6 degrees elevation), make sure you do it in private or you get people used to the idea that you are supposed to zone out while working out. Social dealings with the fuzzies are so hard. How I ever get along with my hyper-organized wife I have no clue, but we complement each other extremely well.

Quite a few people have [quoted text clipped - 10 lines] > > A gallon and a half a day! Once upon a time I was like that. I'd have multiple cokes and mt. dews per day to get me thru the day. Of course I drank it by the 12oz and 20oz can/bottles and not by the liter.
It took me about a year to switch from coke to diet coke. That was probably my biggest step and one I took about 9 yrs ago. I've never looked back. I can't drink non-diet soda any more. And when it comes to the diet stuff, its diet coke, diet pepsi and that's about it. (sprite, mt dew, etc just don't do it for me).
I also started cutting back on the amount of soda in an effort to cut back on caffeine. Its been several years that I've been to the point where I can't drink caffeine after 3pm or I have trouble falling to sleep at night.
Now I'm down to my one 12oz can in the mornings (I don't do coffee) for my caffeine boost and I'm good. I"ll typically drink tea at lunch, and thru-out the day I'll drink water or juice and in the evenings I'll have the occasional beer or glass of wine with dinner.
I'll tell you, it took me a couple of years of slow changes to get to this point. Now I know I can't do too much caffeine, can't do the sugary drinks, don't do well with fatty foods, don't like fast food... etc. It just doesn't even taste right any more.
One change at a time and you'll get there too.

I'm same way.... was a HUGE Mt Dew drinker..... until started having severe gastro problems..... GERD
Mt Dew has something in it called brominated vegetable oil. Read up on it. Not god stuff.
So....I weaned off Mt dew and now drinking diet coke with splenda. Hope to wean off it eventually
Oh.... I think Mt Dew was the only soda that have BVO (brominated veg oil)
